“You two got so lucky,” Hazel looked out at the rough sea before them despite the beaming sun overhead. “You,” She nodded to Megan. “I for sure thought you were a goner. I was ready to write your eulogy.”
“And who gave you that privilege?” Whitney was quick to pipe in. “That’s my job.”
She laid back down on Sienna’s lap, letting the girl run her fingers through her hair. Closing her eyes, she let the sun beat down on her skin, soaking up the heat greedily.
“Who would write mine?” Sienna dangled her head over Whitney’s, depriving her girlfriend of the sun.
“Me as well,” Whitney pushed her away, fighting a smile because she adored it when her girlfriend was playful. “You know this.”
“Bit selfish.” Nia tsked, looking to Megan. “You’d want me to write yours, wouldn’t you?”
“You’re definitely better with words.” Megan looked to be weighing her options as her eyes flitted between Whitney and Nia. “Yeah, Nia writes my eulogy.”
“Traitor.” The green-eyed girl feigned a glare.
“I’d write yours.” The youngest brunette beamed, her eyes almost excited at the thought.
“First of all, don’t look so ready to do it. We are discussing my death. Secondly, your eulogy would consist of stupid Twilight references and misspelled words. Sienna writes my eulogy.”
“Then whose eulogy would I write?” Megan crossed her arms, frowning like a child about to throw a tantrum.
The rest of the girls looked amongst each other and made a point to avoid Megan’s eyes.
“Oh!” Hazel piped up quickly. “If my cat ever dies, you can write his.” She smiled, as if she’d just given Megan the greatest gift.
That led to a round of laughter between Sienna, Whitney and Nia. It was only when Whitney noticed her best friend’s unamused face that she stopped, sat up and pulled the girl to her.
“No one’s writing anyone stupid eulogy,” She hugged Megan to her. “As if I’d let anything happen to any one of you idiots.”
“Ever the God complex, babe.” Sienna scoffed, sitting back and leaning on her elbows.
“Yo! Watch it!” A call rang out across the small group and before any of the girls could really comprehend where or why it came from, Megan acted.
She stopped the ball barreling towards Sienna’s head moments before it made impact, arching at the boy jogging over to them, evidently, where the call had come from.
“Jesus,” Hazel frowned as Megan hurled the ball back at the volleyball player. “Who are you and what have you done with our uncoordinated friend?”
The boy offered Megan a grateful smile, winking as he made his way back over to his friends.
“What? He thinks cause you caught his ball, that’s an in for him?” Whitney scoffed, rolling her eyes at how typically male that was.
“You’re just totally gonna ignore the fact that Megan saved your girlfriend from a broken nose?” Nia arched a brow, also perfectly accustomed to Whitney’s protective side when it came to her best friend.
“Yeah,” Sienna spoke slowly, sitting up completely and eyeing Megan suspiciously for a moment. “Thanks for that.”
“Just doing my civic duty and protecting the face of a literal goddess.” The youngest brunette chuckled softly, moving away from her best friend so Whitney could give her girlfriend a once-over.
“You were, like, freakishly fast.” Hazel’s frown had yet to cease.
“That’s cause I’m the world’s very first superhero,” Megan waggled her brows playfully. “Come on guys, it’s just reflexes. We all have them. Mine just kicked in a little later than most.”
“Yeah, like ten years later.” Whitney scoffed, kissing Sienna’s forehead then her cheek, causing the older girl’s lips to melt into a smile. “Glad your face is still intact, baby.”
“You’d love me less with a flattened face?”
“Never,” Whitney rolled her eyes, pressing her lips where they both wanted her to though not allowing herself to indulge in the kiss for too long before pulling back. “You’d still be the most beautiful girl I know.”
“Gag!” Nia chimed in, rolling her eyes though again, used to Whitney’s moments of PDA with Sienna.
“Shut up, they’re hot.” Megan nudged the dark-skinned girl playfully.
“So you gonna go join butter fingers over there?” Hazel eyed the boy who’d retrieved the wayward ball.
“Please, she has better taste than that.” Whitney rolled her eyes.
“He’s cute!” Megan argued.
“He couldn’t be more average if he tried.” Sienna chuckled softly, wrapping her arms around Whitney’s waist and pulling her close, resting her chin on the green-eyed girl’s shoulder.
“I mean, yeah, he is a little but it’s that beach boy charm.” Megan smirked, lifting herself up. “And I’m feeling flirty.”
The girls watched as she approached the boys playing volleyball, instantly drawing attention which didn’t surprise any of them. Megan was beautiful.
“She’s not joining that game,” Whitney made to get up but Sienna stopped her. “She’s gonna get herself knocked out.”
“Something tells me she can hold her own.” Sienna eyed Megan with an unreadable expression settled on her face.
And she was right. Megan managed to match the boys as they played, sometimes even hitting the ball a little harder than them and none of that alleviated Sienna’s suspicions, in fact, that just raised more questions in her mind.
Megan returned after chatting with one of the boys following their game, her eyes full of mischief and sporting a smirk that Whitney knew meant trouble.
“What the f**k?” The green-eyed girl frowned at her best friend.
“What? I was supposed to pretend to be the frail, little girl in front of the big, manly men?”
“Meg, you are the frail, little girl.” The raven-haired girl searched her friend’s eyes. “What? You move to California and turn into some super girl?”
“It’s called a glow up,” The youngest brunette scoffed, laying back on her towel and letting the sunlight touch her skin some more. “You guys are so dramatic.”
Sienna had so many questions on the tip of her tongue but she knew Megan would simply deflect them so she kept her mouth shut, but that didn’t sate her curiosity.
The rest of the girls seemed happy enough to just write it all off with Megan’s explanation but something about it still left the older brunette feeling uneasy.
The rest of the day seemed to pass with relative normality and when the sun began to set, the girls began packing up their things though Megan insisted that they stay a while longer. So as the sky turned from blue to gold and then black, they sat perched on one blanket, close enough to each other to absorb each other’s heat. And without having to actually say it, they all felt glad that Megan had suggested they stay because the peace of the night calmed them and reminded them of the ease at which life had been when they were all together.
Back when they would meet in the courtyard after class and just discuss how their day had been. Before Hazel had to decide whether or not she wanted to go to college, before Nia had the idea of quitting college though feeling too fearful of her parents’ judgement. Before Sienna counted her days with the girl of her dreams. Before Whitney worried if she would one day have to choose between her best friend and the girl she loved. And before Megan had to bite her tongue about something she knew would change the dynamic of their little group forever.
So they just sat in silence, putting their worries to the very back of their minds and letting the sea breeze sweep away the heaviness in all their hearts.
“You know, we never do s**t like this when you’re away.” Hazel leaned her head on Megan’s shoulder.
“You’re kind of the glue.” Nia leaned on the other shoulder. “This is nice.”
“I miss you guys,” The youngest brunette smiled out to the sea before she turned her head slightly and caught a set of emerald eyes that seemed to be looking right through her and directly into her soul. “I love you guys.”
“We love you too,” Whitney winked as she hugged Sienna closer to her and buried her face in the girl’s neck. “Love you the most.” She whispered just loud enough for her girlfriend to hear.
Sienna turned her head slowly, allowing their lips to touch for a brief moment because a moment this perfect warranted something as perfect as a kiss from the other half of her soul.
They stayed sitting for a while longer, Megan and Hazel finding pictures in the stars and Whitney tracing patterns on the back of Sienna’s thighs. Nia just sat with her eyes closed and listened to the soothing sound of the crashing waves.
It was Nia herself that suggested they pack up and make their way home.
The salt in the air left the entire group more than a little tired but Megan offered to drive home, seeming far more awake than the rest of the group.
Sienna insisted Whitney sit passenger but the green-eyed girl declared it to her her car and that warranted Sienna getting the front seat. Whitney sat between the two girls in the back and acted as the pillow when they eventually fell asleep halfway through the ride home, the green-eyed girl quick to follow behind them, the easy, light snores silenced by the wind rushing through the car as they drove.
Sienna fought the sleep, opting to keep Megan company instead.
“You came back different this time.” She decided not to beat around the bush with the younger brunette. This drew the younger girl’s attention quickly, Megan glancing at the girl beside her briefly and ready to rebut the statement. “And you don’t have to tell me how or why you’re different, I just want you to know that I know. I’ve noticed. You’re still you...but something’s changed.”
“What? You think I’m some kind of vampire now?”
“No,” Sienna scoffed, rolling her eyes. “You wish. But I do know you hit your head when we went under and when you came up, you were fine. You weren’t even tipsy last night and you caught that ball as if you saw it coming from a mile away.”
“Si-”
“Like I said, you don’t have to tell me how or why you’re different...but I know you are.” Sienna closed her eyes and let the night air touch her lids. “And if that hurts her...I won’t handle it this lightly.”
“I would never-”
“She trusts you more than anyone in this world, more than she trusts me,” Sienna met Megan’s eyes as she opened her own. “If this is something big...and you keep this from her, it’ll kill her. If you lie to her...you’ll hurt her.”
“I won’t be back for a while.” Megan exhaled softly. “It’s why today was so important to me. So I can’t tell you what I’m doing and I can’t tell her but...you’ll be here, Si,” She smiled softly at her friend. “And you’ve always had her when I didn’t, so I know she’ll be okay.”
“You’re breaking her heart,” Sienna frowned, nothing about Megan’s explanation making any sense. “You know that, right?”
“Lucky you’ve become somewhat of an expert on her heart,” Megan’s eyes peered into the rearview mirror and smiling as she watched Whitney sleep for a moment. “I’m breaking my own heart but I know she’ll be okay.”
“When did you figure out you were in love with her?” Sienna scoffed, arching a brow at the younger girl.
“When it was too late.” Megan smiled, a small tear trailing down her cheek slowly and she wiped it away quickly.
“You could stay.”
“I told you,” The younger girl nudged her friend lightly. “I’d never hurt her.”
