Chapter 6: The Conspiracy

2014 Words
Monday morning in Mathilde Pack was cold and particularly pleasant. The air was filled with the invigorating freshness of the morning frost. I woke up feeling so tired. Just when I thought I had seen all the changes that came with the breaking of the curse, more kept coming up. Last night, I yearned to see Jamal. It was quite frustrating because we are enemies now and can't be together. "The mark!!!" I shouted, rolled out of bed, and looked at myself in the mirror again. "Son of a bîtch!!! I yelled and Juno growled too. Jamal knew it was me that night! He also knew the bond wouldn't sever as long as the curse remained. This was why he marked me as soon as the curse was broken. With this mark, no one would ever claim me if I rejected him. "Do you think Jupiter would agree to help me?" I asked Juno. "Yes, he is the savior of all wolves," Juno replied. His response gave me inner peace. "Now I know why Alpha Grenold is looking for him. He will never find him!" "He would if you told your friends who Jupiter is and where he is," Juno said. "I'll keep my mouth shut then," I said and Juno flickered her ears. She is quite funny, but I have bonded with Xiane. So I love Xiane more. "I haven't met Jupiter, but I think I like him already. Would he claim me?" I asked. "Of course," Juno responded. I became blissfully happy and fully alive. I felt a warm glow flow through me as though he had claimed me already. I had my bath and put on my jogger pants and socks. I stepped out of my room for my morning jog with joy in my heart. My long red hair, which was tied back in a ponytail, did not stop swinging side by side as I hurried down the stairs with headphones. Outside the main building were Gena and Zahira. They came back to check if I had left the house last night. "Thank God!" Gena exclaimed. "What happened?" Zahira asked. "Nothing! I just decided to heed your advice," I said, lifting my shoulders slightly. "You are lying," Gena said. "Alright," I said and made eye contact. They understood my gesture and moved closer. "My wolf knows where Jupiter is," I said with a low tone. Juno bounced and howled to show me how much she hated what I revealed to my friends. "What!!!! They chorused. "Where is he?" Zahira asked. "She did not tell me, but she is going to take me to him," I responded. Juno howled further. "Hold on a second. Do you mean you are going to meet the Jupiter Alpha Grenold has been looking for for all these years?" "Yes," I responded. "Can we go with you?" Gena asked. The excitement in her eyes was apparent. "No" "Pleeease, we want to see what he looks like," Gena continued begging me. "I will tell you what he looks like after meeting him." "Would you take pictures?" The girls asked in unison. "No" "Are you going to choose him as your mate?" Zahira asked. "I want to if he agrees." "Who would say no to the most beautiful werewolf in Seavia? Of course, he will agree!" Zahira said. My buoyant mood suddenly became heavy with concern for Jamal. My friends read my mood and frowned. "Dahlia, what is it?" Gena asked. "It's Jamal." "Is he dead?" Gena growled. "No" "What happened?" Zahira asked. "I must visit Jamal and reject him again. The one I did, did not sever the mate bond. I felt it last night and I'm feeling it again right now," I said. Juno purred and I wondered what her problem was. Won't she allow me to talk again? Xiane was not like that. She doesn't interrupt me when I'm talking. "Dahlia stop! Jamal is not your mate," Gena sighed. Gena had said that more than a hundred times and I guessed she was hiding something from me. "He is and I need to reject him again," I said, and Juno purred. "Dahlia, Jamal is not your mate!" Gena yelled. "Did you feel the tether that bonded you to him melting away the day you rejected him?" Zahira asked, ignoring Gena. "I did not feel anything, not even a glint of pain." "Then you need to reject him again," Zahira said. "That's what I'm saying." "Hei..3G, what's the early morning gossip?" Brayden, the pack's Beta, asked. "Nothing," I said and tried to fix my headphones. "Hold on! Don't close your ear yet. I have a message for you," Brayden said, and I took my hands down. "What is it?" "The Alpha would like to talk to you." "Where is he?" I asked. "Come with me," Brayden said and turned. "Alright…I'll see you guys later," I said, turned too, and followed Brayden. He kept looking at me as we walked towards my dad's favorite garden. I have warned him several times to stop looking at me as if I were his mate, but he wouldn't listen. Well, whatever!! I shrugged and continued walking. "Good morning Dad." "Daddy's Princess! How are you today?" "I'm fine Dad. Good morning Alice," I greeted my dad's human mistress. She just waved at me and continued eating her breakfast. Alice hates me as much as I hate her. She turned my dad's eyes away from his responsibility, leaving the burdens of all the pack members on my shoulder. Yet she won't allow my dad to step down for me. "Sit," my dad pointed at an empty chair. I walked towards the chair and sat down. "Has the issue you have with Prince Alan been settled?" "No, Dad." "What happened?" "A misunderstanding," I responded. "Who misunderstood?" "Both of us." "When are you going to settle the problem?" "It's over." "There is no problem," he lifted his shoulders. "As long as both of you are not mad at each other. Breakups don't have to be angry," he advised. "We are not." "Alright. We have an emergency Alpha meeting this evening and I want you to represent Mathilde Pack," my dad said as if he had ever attended the meeting. I can't remember the last time he went to the meeting. "What's the emergency?" "I don't know," he replied. "Dad, when are you stepping down for me?" I asked. "He will do no such thing!" Alice yelled. "You are a girl and should get ready to be someone's Luna!!" "What do you know about werewolves, you bloody human!!" I snarled back at her and hit my hands on the table. "Tell me, what do you know? If you ever put your mouth in our conversation again, I will strangle you with my bare hands!!" "Dahlia!" Alpha Harold growled. "Sit down!" He growled again, but I hesitated. I manifested unimaginable strength for six years and controlled and protected all the pack members, including the Alpha. Even when the strength is no more, I still feel like I have it. My body has yet to adjust and bow to reality. The reality is that I'm now a normal werewolf. "Dahlia, sit down," Alpha Harold shouted. I sat down and kept my eyes straight. "I know you deserve to be the Alpha, but you are a girl. I'm not handing the pack over until you find your mate. Fated or chosen mate. Just get a mate!" "Alright Dad," I said and fixed my headphones. "Brayden, get ready; you are going with me." I stood up and jogged out of the compound. My friends followed me. ************* At 4 pm, I dressed up for the meeting. Brayden, the Beta of Mathilde pack was already on the passenger side of my car waiting for me. I entered the rear side and the driver drove off. I glanced at my wristwatch when we got to the Kingdom State Building where we hold meetings monthly. It was seven minutes past four. That was seven minutes late. It took the elevator 45 seconds to arrive and another 45 seconds to take us to the 80th floor. All eyes turned and fixed on us as soon as we walked into the hall. There were surprised looks on their faces and I could tell it was not a good look. I waved at them and walked confidently towards my favorite position. "Good evening all," Alpha Khalil, the leader of the Golden Moon pack stood up and greeted us. Alpha Khalil has been acting as the overall leader of all Alphas since Jamal's father, who was the leader, died and Jamal, who would have taken over his father's responsibility, distanced himself from the council. Some of the Alphas in the hall waved at Alpha Khalil and he began to address the council. "I called this emergency meeting today because of several reports I got this morning. We are all aware of the pack laws and policies. Section 25 of our constitution says that on no account should a member of a pack conspire against a member of another pack. The anonymous reports I got this morning stated that Princess Dahlia Gritn of Mathilde pack is planning with an evil Alpha Grenold, our only enemy, to attack the Greenland pack." "What?" Alpha Alex, the leader of the Greenland pack and the father of Alan shouted. Alpha Khalil waved at him to calm down. He turned and looked at me. The heavy lashes that shadowed my cheeks flew up. I was so short of words. This was Alan's plot. It was quite obvious. "Princess Dahlia, please, stand," Alpha Khalil gestured. I stood up and a soft gasp escaped from my lips. "Would you tell this honorable council why you are planning to attack the Greenland pack?" "I'm not planning to attack the Greenland Pack. Actually, I had a real beef with Alan, but he was the one who threatened to join forces with Alpha Grenold, not me!" I said. Alpha Alex, Alan's father, scoffed and howled at me. "Are you trying to shift the conspiracy to my son because he is not here?" He growled. "He told me everything you said!" "I'm not trying to shift the conspiracy to him!" I snapped back at him. "Alan is the one who threatened to destroy my pack!" "Tell me; why would he do that? What did you do to him?" Alpha Khalil asked. "I…I…I…nothing," I stuttered, frowned, and swallowed a hard drool when I realized I couldn't tell them what happened and one is considered a liar when he or she stammers before the council. I just passed judgment on myself. There was murmuring in the hall, following my stammering. Alpha Khalil urged them to calm down and there was silence in the hall again. "I hereby give Greenland pack the authorization to fight back!" Alpha Khalil said and hit his hands on the table. "You can't keep going around the packs, intimidating people, because you are called the strongest werewolf in Seavia! We are in July and this council has received seven reports about your misconduct!" "She hasn't seen war all her life!" Another Alpha said. "You will surely hear from us, Dahlia Gritn!" Alpha Alex, Alan's father said. None of the Alphas in the hall said anything. However, happiness is shown on their faces. Alan was right. All of them are jealous of me. I stood still, looking at the Alphas as they left the hall. My face looked stiff and proud, but my spirit was in chaos. I sat down when they had gone out of the hall. My pride concealed my inner turmoil. "With the help of Jupiter, you will win the battle. But there is something you must do," Juno purred. "What is it?" I muttered. "You need to work on your pride. The word 'I'm sorry' is not a sign of weakness, but a polite regret. Learn how to use it often," Juno said. "Let's go home," a male voice said. I lifted my head slowly and saw Brayden offering me his right hand.
