1668 Words
Hanna, having scanned through several of her notes on Amanda, grew weary. Suddenly she decided that she needed to call her sister Avery and let her know about the the attack. She knew Avery would be up late. She was worried about her sister living alone. She informed Avery about Paul Sicarius and asked her to be wary of any strange men or anyone that made her feel uncomfortable. They were not aware of exactly why Paul Sicarius was after her, but she wanted Avery to watch out, just in case. Avery's usual self was to be nonchalant about everything she did not really want to get involved in Hanna's business nor her father's. Avery had her own issues going on at home. She lived in Texas for 2 years after college. She had then moved back to Oregon for a job opportunity. That's what she told people when they asked her. The truth was she got dumped by the man she thought was her soul mate. Apparently he had several other soul mates on the side. Avery was depressed and all alone. That's what she preferred. She didn't want anyone to fuss over her. Hanna was good at that. So she had actually accepted a position as an accountant for the a small Menonite run business in the busy town of Albany Oregon. The Menonites lived in a gated cluster. They were Christians that lived a life of strict pacifism, a plain lifestyle, shunning oaths, and commiting to social justice. She had to look that part up. They were a type of people that Avery grew to admire. The people seemed to have accepted her quickly. She was growing to like it there. Her job in Albany was not as busy as she had made it out to be to her family, in fact she was barely getting by. She was too proud to let anybody know her secrets. Yes, Avery had a lot of secrets and was too caught up in her own life to worry about Hanna's. Hanna was always her father's favorite, she knew this. Avery was very close to her mother- being the youngest child. She was having a very hard time living without her in this world. Hanna nor her father knew about her depression, but they had suspected there was something going on with her. Avery decided that she was going to go to bed early and first thing in the morning she would stop for a beautiful cup of coffee and head out to the big town of Portland. She knew it was expected of her to support her sister. Even though she told herself not to care, she had made the excuse in her mind that she couldn't afford the cost of gas these days. It was still nagging on her to go and see Hanna, her only sister. The morning came quickly. Avery got up as she had planned, stubbing her toe on the end of the bed. This caused a delay, as it took some time for her to bandage her toe and start her day. She ended up leaving way past noon. The line for the coffee was very long- she did enjoy her coffee though. That was one thing Hanna and her sister Avery had in common they depended on their coffee, being from the Pacific Northwest. There were many options to choose from. Avery actually preferred more sugary drinks and exotic flavors of coffee and Hanna would just stick to a soy milk latte with no sugar, so boring, thought Avery. Coffee in hand, she had gotten a an iced grande mocha frappuccino and went out to start her old red Subaru. Ever since she had "borrowed" Hanna's car battery, it had started beautifully. Avery knew if she told Hanna or her father Henry about her financial situation that they would hound her to move back home. She felt defiant about this, always the baby of the family. She had a lot to prove to show them she was successful like Hanna was. She knew that she would have to give Hanna back her battery at some point, she didn't even tell her that she had traded batteries with her. She had been too low on funds to replace her own battery. Avery knew Hanna would be shopping at the farmer's market that day with her father-they always took his truck to go get items there for family dinner night. So... when she came up for her mandatory visit, she took matters into her own hands. Avery switched car batteries, knowing that Hanna would be able to get a new battery at any time. She had planned on letting Hanna know as soon as she could get the funds to replace it, so for now that was just one of her many secrets. By the time Hanna had woken up, it was already 10 o'clock in the morning her father had driven them back to her home and she had crashed soon after that. She felt very groggy this morning and confused. It had been a very long night for everyone. Hanna got up and made her usual cup of coffee. She loved to use her espresso machine. Perfectly brewed dark roast that she took the time to grind. Foaming the soy milk and adding cinnamon with one stevia. She just loved the smell of fresh coffee. She thought of her sister Avery and how she had reacted last night to the news of the attack. It was as if she didn't even care. She didn't even bother to offer to come and visit her. Hanna was very hurt by this. A few hours later Avery came limping up the step, her toe still sore. She knocked on Hanna's door -it was more of a knocking and entering than an actual wait for permission to enter. She called out, "Hello?" She was not thinking that Hanna might be a little bit upset by someone just walking in the front door. Hanna let out a loud curling scream when the door had opened abruptly. Seeing it was her sister Avery, Hanna cried and put her hands out to her baby sister. Avery came and gave her a big hug. Hanna said, "Oh thank you for coming- I didn't think you were going to come out today. I just figured you were too busy and I really needed you -so thank you so much for coming!" Avery just shrugged her shoulders and said, "No problem, besides I wanted to borrow some of your clothes. I have an event this week! It's going to be my first ever fall festival with the Menonite community where I work. I have an official invite to attend the festival, though I have been instructed on what to wear and how to act by one of the women that has befriended me. Her name is Susan." Hanna smiled and said."Oh, that sounds like fun. Actually, are there any Menanite men that you might be interested in?" She had known that Avery had a bad break up with her last boyfriend, though they didn't talk about it much. Avery was not wanting to discuss it. Hanna walked over and made herself another cup of coffee and offered one to Avery. Avery held up her cup, which was almost empty. Hanna invited her to come sit out on the back porch and they began to talk about the recent events. Hanna told her a little bit about Amanda and what she knew. She said, "Ive been wracking my brain to try and find out exactly who Paul Sicarius is. It's hard to believe Amanda's cousin is a crazy knife weilding attacker." Avery said, "I have a few friends that might be able to help. Let me make a few calls for you." Avery thought she might be able to help her sister as she had a friend in the IRS world that might be able to look up any information on him. Hanna had not thought about that before, but she was happy that Avery took initiative to try and help her figure this out. Hanna's mind began to wander back to Adam as she remembered how he had given her a warm hug goodbye and told her that he would call her today. He had yet to call her. She was actually happy that it was an extended weekend due to the Labor day holiday and she didn't have to be to work until Tuesday. Adam was probably busy anyway, she told herself. Hanna's father joined the two girls for coffee, he said he was planning on spending another night, she was quite relieved that he would be there. About 15 minutes passed. Avery was trying on Hanna's dresses in her room when she had heard a light rapping on the front door. Not thinking, she opened the door in her bra and panties, quickly holding the dress in front of herself as she saw it was an extremely handsome man. "Uh, I'm here to see Hanna,"he said looking away. Hanna heard Adam's voice and ran to the door. She chastised Avery. "Goodness Avery, is that how you answer the door? What if it was him, the attacker?" Avery didn't think about it being Paul Sicarius. She wasn't sure why she had opened the door abruptly. That knock didn't sound like a crazy slasher's knock. Adam smiled at seeing Hanna. Her hair was pinned up with a loose strand around her glasses. He reached out and pulled it back. Avery took a step back seeing that this gorgeous man only had eyes for Hanna. She said. "My apologies. Let me get dressed and we can meet properly." Hanna wasn't paying attention. She was staring directly at Adam's lips. Adam moved in and kissed her on the cheek. Hanna closed her eyes and took a deep breath. My goodness he smells good, she thought. Adam caressed her cheek and asked to come in.
