Chapter FiveLater that night, Peter once again made a bed on the floor by the stove. He slept and he dreamed. He dreamed he was a teenage boy, running. He ran with the ease and energy of one born to run. * * * * The youth ran at a steady pace and his stride ate up distance at a deceptive rate. A thick layer of skin covered his soles from years of walking and running barefoot. On this day, light moccasins further protected his feet from the sharpest shale and broken roots. Sixteen summers had weathered his skin to a deep red brown. The arduous route challenged the boy to his limits and he faced gradients and constant changes of direction to avoid rocks and small trees.
