Chapter ThirteenThe sudden heavy rain drove them off the porch and into the cabin. The two girls made an amicable arrangement to commandeer Peter’s bed and left him to sleep on the floor once again. Mishka put on her most forlorn face; Peter relented and let her in to shelter from the rain, despite the cramped conditions. The rain pelted onto the roof and against the shutters with a constant drumming. The cabin was a little cocoon of comfort to Julie. She felt warm and safe inside with her new companions. She ached all over and tried to ignore the nasty welts and bruises that Mitch had inflicted. She was aware that she must smell bad even if she couldn’t detect it herself. She fought an urge to go outside naked and let the rain wash the dirt and pain from her body. She would have to wait
