I couldn’t breathe.

It wasn’t as easy as they said it would be. The pain was unlike any other I’d ever experienced in my whole life, my entire body was experiencing a new sensation. All of my bones were being broken and rearranging themselves to form a wolf shape. I could even hear my skin tearing during the process, each tear bringing a new wave of pain that exploded in my brain. My face wasn’t exempted during the transformation, as I could hear and feel the bones cracking as my jaws elongated to create my wolf’s face.

The development of my canine teeth was the most painful of them all. I couldn’t stand the pain any longer and screamed into the night, but all I could hear was my wolf’s howling, not my own human voice.

‘Jayden, you need to be a little more patient. The pain will pass quickly, and you’ll be able to breathe again,’ I heard my wolf through the mind link, and it sounded comforting, so I chose to listen to him. As he said, the transformation was quick, and I was in my wolf form, a black wolf representing an Alpha which was much bigger than the other wolves.

The sound of hands clapping together filled the arena, and my dad mind linked me to howl into the night and welcome the newly transformed wolves that transformed together with me tonight. My Beta or mate, if there, would be drawn to me during the process. I howled just as he instructed.

After that, I took a step forward, and the newly transformed wolves followed behind me. I noticed a brown wolf with a black patch approaching me, and when it got close enough, the wolf stopped and bowed before me.

‘My name is Kyle Willows. I’m your Beta, and this is Lupo, my wolf,’ Kyle said through the mind link and I smiled.

‘My name is Jayden,” I replied. ‘Thank you for accepting me as your Alpha.’

We talked for a while through the mind link before my dad beckoned me. Excusing myself from my Beta, I strolled to meet my dad.

“Let me introduce you to your new Alpha, everyone. My beloved son, Jayden, is now the Alpha of the Dark Wood Pack. I hope that everyone will treat him with the same respect that you did for me. I’ll be stepping down as your Alpha, but that doesn’t mean I’ll abandon my people. No I won't, my people matter to me a lot. I’ll be working alongside my son until he’s ready to fully take over handling the Pack on his own. Thank you so much,” he concluded and the crowd erupted into loud cheers and applause.

I bowed my head to my dad and then the crowd, before using the mind link to connect with everyone. The Alpha and the Beta were the only ones granted the gift to be able to mind link with everyone in the pack by the Moon Goddess in terms of danger to warn the people to keep safe and also for announcements in case of an emergency.

“Thank you for the warm welcome, Dad, and also thank you for this great opportunity,” I said. “I promise I’ll never let you down.”

My father patted my wolf and smiled. I turned to face the crowd, who were all standing in respect of their new Alpha and eager to hear what I had to say.

‘Thank you very much, everyone. Because I’m a man of few words, I’ll go right to the point. I promise to do a better job and continue where my father had left off. I promise to protect the members of this Pack and to lay down my life to ensure that no one under my care is in danger. I will ensure that the smiles and laughter on our faces never cease. All I ask is that you all join me in making the Pack a great one. Thank you so much,’ I said, putting an end to the long-anticipated but dreaded speech that had been giving me nightmares.

I’d always assumed I’d be bad at giving speeches or making my dad proud of me, but seeing the old man smile after my speech today made me realize I did a fantastic job. Hearing the crowd’s cheers of ‘Alpha Jayden’ filled the arena, and I felt energized and happy.

“Now comes the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the moment the new Alpha will walk into the crowd in search of his mate among us. If none of you are chosen, it means the Alpha’s mate is not a member of our Pack, but, regardless of which Pack his mate comes from, we will love and cherish the Luna, his mate, like ours,” Dad explained before turning to me. “Go on, son, your mate is waiting for you.”

This was the last thing I wanted to do. My heart wasn’t beating for any of the people in the crowd, my heart was beating for the one person who didn’t even bother to show up. To me, searching for a mate I’ll never love felt like a punishment for both me and my mate. I didn't want this to happen and even hoped something bad would happen and the ceremony would be canceled.

‘Are you ready to meet our mate?’ My wolf asked, and I shook my head.

'No, I'm not. I'm not ready to meet him or her yet. What is your name, please?' I asked, realizing I didn't know my wolf's name.

'Silly me, I'm Thane.”

'It's nice to meet you, Thane. From now on, let's work closely together," I murmured, scanning the area for my mate.

‘Don't worry Jayden. Our mate is lovely and sweet. I’m sure you’d like him or when you see them,” Thane assured me.

‘You know who our mate is, right? You really do know who our mate is?’ I asked, excitedly, and Thane nodded his head affirmatively.

‘Go on, tell me,“

‘I would love to but it’s a secret I can’t disclose. I want you to find him or her on your own,’

‘This is punishment, you know. I thought we just agreed to work together,“ I whined.

‘Definitely. We’ll work closely together, but not on this one. Have fun, buddy. I’ll see you when it’s time to meet again,’ Thane remarked as he blocked the link.

Damn that wolf! He got my hopes up and then decided to dash it fast. ‘Let’s work together, my foot.' I crumbled as I searched round the arena.

I walked around the arena a couple of times before I gave up. My mate was not among the crowd. I wasn’t sure whether to be happy or sad, but I was hoping that since Damien wasn’t present, then maybe he was my mate. I didn’t want to give up hope, so the thought that the Moon Goddess would hand Damien to me on a platter of gold made my heart flutter.

Giving up on the search, I returned to my father, who comforted me by patting my head and saying, “Don’t be sad that your mate isn’t here. Don't worry son, outside of the Pack, you will meet your destined mate, just as the Moon Goddess destined for you,”

They were nice words, but if he could only look into my heart and mind, he’d see that I wasn’t sad or worried, but rather hoping for something else.

“Dad, can I go inside and rest? I’m exhausted,” I said to my father. I was tired from the shifting, and all I wanted to do was lie down and sleep.

“Yes, son, you can, but you must be on the plane by four in the morning. We need to arrive at the Alpha’s summit on time,“ Dad reminded me.

“Yes, Dad. I understand. I’ll wake up early,” I promised, before heading to my room.

I was almost there when I was pulled aside and forcefully kissed. Before I could react, I caught a whiff of the person’s scent, and it was none other than Lincoln. I deepened the kiss as I relaxed, and he dragged me to our hideout.
