Chapter 3

Mika’s POV I know my father didn’t tell me everything in the car ride to this place that he calls home. In all the years that we have been moving from house to apartment to hotel, never once had he referred to a place as home.  Until now that is.  He told me that he was once Alpha, a title that is not taken lightly and is passed on from generation to generation. It is not only the title that matters but also the bloodline. He told me about werewolves and shifting. Then he just mentioned something about mates before he told me about the day he found me and gave everything up for me because he thought I was human and from the moment he held me in his arms I was his daughter.  As much as I love him for being honest with me and telling me that I am his daughter warms my heart, it also broke my heart. Somebody abandoned me out in the middle of nowhere in the cold and left me to die. Whoever my biological parents are, they didn’t want me and they couldn’t care less that I was going to die.  Alpha Elijah, well ex-Alpha really showed me to a room and told me to let him know if I have any problems with his son again.  “It has been a long time since I saw Jayden riled up like that and knocked down.  He is quite strong.” Elijah said and smiled warmly at me. He reminded me of a grandfather figure that I never had before.  I smiled back and simply shrugged. “All of this might be new to me, but no matter what or who I have always had a bit of a problem with authority figures especially bullies.”  Elijah threw his head back and laughed. “I got a feeling that you are going to keep everyone on their toes.  Jayden has just about gotten used to Jace, his son, I don’t know how he is going to handle you.  I shook my head at him and sat down on the bed. I wanted to take off my sandals off and put on my running shoes. “The trick is not to try to handle me, but to humour me and I will learn to handle you and everyone else. I kind of observe people and once you know someone you know how not to step on their toes.”  Elijah raised an eyebrow and then nodded his head once as though he was happy with my answer. “You really are something else. I will report back to Jayden that you are not going to be a problem.”  “Great, thanks.” “So why are you putting on your running shoes now?”  “I want to go for a run. I need to go for a run.” I said as I got up and made sure my laces were tied tight. “I am sorry, but that is not going to happen right now.” Elijah said rubbing his forehead. He looked like he had been through much but learned to cover it all up. “Your first shift is going to happen in a short while, you need to prepare for that.” “I am not shifting tonight.” I said as I walked over to my room door.  “Why do you say that?”  “Because I can feel it. My body is both begging to shift and fighting the shift. Tell me I am not the only one who wondered why my father thought I was human instead of a werewolf when he found me?”  After I said that I walked out.  Before I could even exit the house a twelve year old girl made her way to me. She was wearing a tank top and shorts and running shoes. “Can I run with you?” she asked and had a smile that told me she was asking because it was the courteous thing to do. Even if I said no, she was going to run with me.  “I would like that, maybe you can show me some good running trails around here. “ I replied with a smile of my own.  After a few warm up exercises we began to run and, Kayla as I discovered her name was, kept on talking about the pack and her family.  Apparently I knocked her dad on his ass and it was hilarious. Maybe if I become friends with her I could get off easy when it comes to the Alpha. Then again I am pretty sure that getting on his s**t list in the first few minutes that I am here is not a good way to get to know the Alpha.  “You look a bit like my brother Jace, you know.” Kayla said as we were cooling down after our run.  “I never met your brother so I wouldn’t know.” I said with a half-smile and continued to stretch.  “Well you do. The only thing really different between you two is that he looks like an MMA fighter with a military haircut, while you are petite and got long hair not to mention your eyes are violet.” Kayla said pointing out the differences between her brother and me. She had a really thoughtful look on her face as she made the list. “You two could be twins.” Seriously? She described a boy who does not exactly sound like we could be related at all.  Maybe there is a way to squash this idea of hers once and for all.  “How old is your brother?” “He is seventeen, turning eighteen on the first of November.” I was busy standing on one leg while stretching my other leg, so when she said that I lost balance and fell on my ass.  I laughed, even though to my own ears it sounded forced. “It looks like your brother and I were born on the same day.” “Really?” Kayla asked. “That is awesome! We can throw the two of you one big birthday party together. We can have some pink and purple balloons. Jace is going to be so mad if we do that, but it will be funny.” Kayla laughed maliciously and I couldn’t help but laugh with her. Whoever this Jace is I am sure he has a lot to deal with when it comes to having a sister like Kayla. “It must be cool having such a big family and an older brother.” I said offhandedly as I laid down on the grass. The sunlight seemed to shine on the leaves of the trees and the trees allowed some of the sunlight to shine down on my face. The sun should be setting soon. Kayla laid down next to me and sighed. “It is, but at the same time it isn’t. Blood is family, pack is family and family stands together. Everyone is told that from the time they are born to the day they die. So I always have someone to talk to and friends to be with, but I also don’t get a lot of time to myself to do what I want to do. I turned over to face her. “What is it you want to do?”  “Right now I want to go to the arcade but the mall is three hours away and no one will drive me now.” I laughed and then got up and held my hand out for Kayla to grab. “We might not be able to go to the arcade, but I am sure we can find something fun to do.”  “No, my dad said you should be getting ready for your first shift.” Kayla said as she took my hand. “But there is always tomorrow. We can spend the day together once we get back from school.” “We get back from school?”  “Yes, though I am pretty sure you will only be going on the day after tomorrow. “ Kayla said as we walked back to the pack house. “Okay, looks like there are  plans being made about me without my knowledge, not sure I really like that.” I was starting to feel a little light headed but I brushed it off as nothing and continued to walk back with Kayla. I really should talk to Jayden the almighty Alpha, there is still a lot I need to learn.  The walk took less than five minutes and by the time I found my way to Jayden, or should I say the Alpha’s office, I felt a little weak and tired and was in a lot of pain.  I knocked before pushing the door open. I fell right in and landed on all fours. I was heaving and trying to fight off the pain.  Joseph was in the office with Jayden and rushed over to my side.  He kept on repeating something while he had his hands on me.  “I can’t help her, Jayden I have never felt anything like this before.” Joseph said as he picked me up and took me to the couch that was against the wall.  “Call Killian, he is going to want to be here. And call mom too, maybe she can help. “Jayden said as he knelt down beside me.  “Why does it hurt so much? Why am I in so much pain?” I asked as I tried to focus on my breathing.  “I don’t know. I really don’t know.” He ran a hand over my head and sighed.  “Jayden what happened?” A woman asked, she was the woman I saw Elijah with earlier. She must be Jayden’s mother, Skye.  “I don’t know, she just stumbled into my office.” Jayden said as he got up and made way for her to be by my side.  “We need to take her outside; I think she is getting ready to shift.” Skye said and got up so that Jayden could pick me up.  The door slammed open. “What happened?” My father asked, he sounded panicked and I felt myself being transferred from Jayden’s arms to my father.  “We need to take her outside, she is beginning to shift.” Jayden answered him. “Why does she look like she is in so much pain, something is wrong?” My father announced as he carried me out.  “Nothing is wrong.” Skye said to him, but I heard it. I heard the hope she had behind her words. Something is wrong and no one is saying anything about it. They are all clueless when it comes to what is going on with me.  I felt so much pain; a battle was going on inside of me. I know I told Elijah I was not going to shift today because I am different. There is a reason my father didn’t know I was a werewolf when he first saw me.  I felt more than saw my surroundings, my father placed me on the ground and I heard murmurs but nothing was happening, aside from the fact that I was in a lot of pain. I really couldn’t take much more.  I screamed and screamed and nobody did anything, because there was nothing anyone could do to help me now.  “What is going on?” My father shouted out.  “I called Alex, he should be here soon. “ Jayden said, not answering my father’s question. He knows just about as much as the next person.  I stopped trying to focus on what I was feeling and focused on everyone else. It was better that way. I felt less.  “You called.” Someone said, his voice didn’t sound familiar to me.  “Took you long enough.” Jayden muttered. “Something is wrong with her, she is not shifting and she is in a lot of pain.” A man with the blackest hair I have ever seen knelt down beside me and placed a hand on my chest and a hand on my forehead. His hair interested me; it was not the kind of black hair people are born with or what you buy in a bottle or box. No his hair was an unnatural natural black that said he was supernatural.  “Her body is refusing the shift; there is not much I can do.” He said calmly and smiled at me.  I attempted to smile back but I was in so much pain I grimaced instead and clutched my stomach.  “What can you do for her?” My father asked, his voice begging for an answer. “I am going to take the pain away.” Alex said to me.  I don’t know what happened except that one second I could hear everybody and see everything and the next second, there was nothing.
