Chapter 1

1830 Words
17 YEARS LATER Mika’s POV The bell rang, indicating the start of the school day. I closed the book I was reading and got up from the bench I was sitting on.  I have been at this school for three months now, and every time the bell rings it’s annoying screechy sound, it made me cringe, they really need to fix that damn thing.  As I looked around at the others dressed similar to me, girls wearing grey skirts with white shirts tucked in and red ties while the boys wore their white shirts with the same red ties and long grey pants.  The only difference between me and them is that – what do you know? There is no difference. I blend in even with my violet eyes and uncommon sense of humor. The people here found my eye colour to be interesting, I told them they were contacts and they seemed to buy that.  A few more months and I will be done with high school and off to college, or maybe I will even skip a year. Take a year, or two, to go back-pack around the world or whatever continent I land on that I can spend some time exploring.  As I made my way to class, I noticed that my usual History teacher was not in, and I was the last one to make it to class. I quickly apologized to the substitute teacher as I made my way to an empty desk which just so happened to be right in front of the teacher’s desk. Just my luck. “Okay class, I know you were expecting Mrs. Loneson after your long weekend but I regret to inform you that she has a family emergency and will not be returning for a month.” He took a second to survey the class and when his eyes landed on me he paused for a second and shook his head before he continued.  “My name is Mr. Kent and I will be your substitute History teacher for the month until Mrs. Loneson gets back. If you promise to behave, come in on time and do your work I promise we will not have any problems. Any questions?”  I am pretty sure the girl sitting right behind me lifted her hand to ask a question, but Mr. Kent’s eyes seemed to be on me but he pointed at the girl behind me, indicating that she could ask her question.  “How old are you Mr. Kent?”  The girl asked and I rolled my eyes.  If I was being honest I have to admit that Mr. Kent could easily be considered a hunk. He was lean and muscular the shirt he wore was not that tight but tight enough to outline his muscular body, he had dark eyes and his hair was black and cut short, his skin was bronze as though he spends a lot of time outdoors and he had an easy smile. A smile that showed dimples and one that he was now flashing at the girl behind me and I promise it made me feel comfortable. It felt familiar. “I am close to thirty, that is all you need to know, Miss?” Mr. Kent said waiting for the girl to fill in the blank.   “Lisa.” She answered seductively and I had to do all that I could to stop myself from snickering at her.  “Well, if that is all. Can you please take out your history books and turn to page sixty-seven.”  The rest of the class passed by in a blur for me because I was too busy focusing on my breathing. I started getting chest pains and felt like my bones were all seconds away from breaking. I focused on my breathing to stop myself from gasping or crying because of the slight to mildly extreme pain I felt.  When the class finally ended Mr. Kent told me to stay behind while the rest of the class left. I knew for a fact since he is taking over for Mrs. Loneson that he should have second period off so I wasn’t worried that anyone would walk in now and see me like this.  “Are you alright?” Mr. Kent asked. I was too afraid to open my mouth so I just shook my head no and then gasped when an unexpected blast of pain ripped through my body.  “Damn it!” he muttered and knelt beside me. He placed his hand on my back and I felt warmth spread through my body and the pain began to subside a bit, but it was still there.  “Call my dad.” I whispered.  I wanted my dad now! He is the only family I have and I don’t care what Mr. Kent did or how long it would last; but if I was dying or whatever, I just wanted to see my dad and tell him I love him.  “Okay, I will do that now. What is your name?” Mr. Kent asked as he got up.  “Mika Davis, my father is Killian Davis and I already feel whatever the hell I was feeling earlier coming back, so can you please just call my father already!” I screamed at him and then muffled the scream by placing my fist in my mouth.  I really didn’t want anybody coming in here to check what is going on in the class.  I fainted when the next wave of pain hit me but before the darkness claimed me. I felt myself being lifted up and heard Mr. Kent cursing.  “This should be fun.” I am not sure how long I knew I was out, but when I opened my eyes I knew one thing for sure. I was not at school anymore. It looked like I was in a log cabin in the middle of nowhere surrounded by woods and fury creatures. Nothing about this screams creepy at all.  I heard voices outside and knew that one of those voices belonged to my father.  Just hearing his voice made me feel safe. I was so happy that he was so close by that when I got up I just rushed outside of the house only to see my father pushing Mr. Kent up against a beam and growling at him.  Great, my dad is growling like a beast.  “Joseph, she is not like us!” My father growled as he slammed Mr. Kent – well, Joseph as my father called him.  Joseph seemed to be getting mad so he pushed back and my father let go of him. “She is your daughter, how the hell can you say she is not like us. Your blood runs in her veins stop being so damn stubborn and start making preparations.  She is going to shift tonight. If I wasn’t her substitute teacher today I am pretty sure she would have shifted in front of the whole school and exposed our kind to humans.” Humans? Last I checked I was human. I am not saying that I am normal, just saying that I am human.  “Killian, you might have left the pack long ago and lived all these years as a rogue but that won’t be fair to Mika. You have kept her in the dark her entire life. When she shifts she is going to need to be around others like her.” Joseph said calmly and put his hand on my father’s shoulder.   “You don’t understand! She is not like us.”  Joseph looked confused. “What do you mean?” “She is not my biological daughter.” My father said softly, so softly that I barely heard him.  I felt my whole world began to crumble but I stayed still. I needed to hear what else they were going to say. I needed to hear everything with my own two ears. They still haven’t noticed me and I needed to know more before I decided what to do next.  “I found her while I was hiking on a mountain top seventeen years ago. She was abandoned and I couldn’t leave her there. She would have died. Once I realized that she was abandoned and no one was going to come for her I decided to look after her.” My father sighed and a slight smile was on his face. “I was so in love with her I couldn’t let her go. She was such a beautiful little girl and I knew that it would break my heart if anything bad ever happened to her so I adopted her and gave up the pack.” My father gave up something that meant a lot to him, for me. I could hear it in his voice how much the pack meant to him and I couldn’t help but cry. There is a sense of longing that comes from him from simply just mentioning the pack. He gave up his pack for a child he had no ties to. My biological parents might not have wanted me but someone did and he raised me as his own.  “You know that doesn’t prove that she is human. When I took away some of the pain I felt it. I felt her wolf beginning to awaken and tonight is a full moon. If we leave now we can make it to the pack before nightfall. She will need you and the women will help her understand things she might not be able to discuss with you.” My father growled and he sounded more beastly than anything else.  “Daddy, what is going on?” I asked as I stepped into their line of view and made my presence known.  “We are going home.” Those four words made me realize that all these years that we have been moving from house to apartment to boat, none of those were home to us. But according to him, we’re going home now.  I nodded my head and made my way to my father and hugged him. “I love you daddy.”  My father kissed my head; “I love you too.” Joseph smiled at us but then his smile turned into a frown and he cursed. “Looks like I can forget about my job now. Barely a day and already I have to quit.” My father and I laughed and for some reason I knew that even though Joseph was mad about having to leave his job he didn’t really mind.  Wherever we are going now, I got a feeling that things are going to change.
