It wasn’t the first time that Eric had felt this kind of unusual phenomenon, but Andy felt it for the first time. He was about to say something when Eric interrupted him.
“What are you waiting for? Collect all the arrows that we shot. Our weapons are limited, we need to recycle them as much as we can!” shouted Eric.
The attack from the zombie dog was so sudden that they hadn’t even had time to look around. Thankfully, there seemed to be no zombies, only rows and rows of cars.
Eric found a black SUV. Luckily, it was open. He beckoned Andy over and flung his backpack and weapon inside. Only when he closed the door did Eric breathe a sigh of relief.
“The world is different from the one we were used to. We must learn to be alert to attacks at all times!” Eric said slowly. Strangely enough, this was the first time he had felt truly alive since waking up two days previous.
Because of the large space in the SUV, Eric did not put the things in the trunk, but dumped them on the back seat. He asked Andy to sit in the passenger seat, then gave him the truncheon and crossbow.
“The zombies have already gone upstairs, and I estimate it was a lot of them, so there shouldn’t be too many left at the exit of the parking lot.” Eric analysed the situation carefully.
Andy was also thinking. “Eric, the food and drink we brought now should be enough for about 10 days. If we go now, we’ll need to find a quiet place to store our supplies and settle down for a while.”
He was right. Though the problem was: they did not have a destination!
They couldn’t go to any densely populated residential areas or business districts. After all, these were the places where a large number of people were concentrated before the doomsday began.
Originally the office building had been a good place, but the number of zombies nearby was too large and they had finally broken through the security door and reached Eric and Andy’s hideout up on the 35th floor.
Wait a minute! An idea suddenly occurred to Eric as he thought about everything. Aside from a number of tall buildings, Kings city had another characteristic: a huge number of basement properties!
As the capital of State C, Kings city had a population of more than 50 million. The price of land in Kings city was very high, so many couldn’t afford to live in the high rises; instead choosing to rent the basement flats. The basements were big and the rent was cheap. The only bad thing was the lack of light.
“Andy! Can you think of an area that has relatively low numbers of people?” Eric asked.
Andy scratched his head. “Hmmm... There should be fewer people in the north, like up by the northern suburbs. What are you thinking?”
Northern suburbs? Eric was not familiar with that area. “My idea is that we find a basement in a quiet area, somewhere with not many zombies. We’ll stay there for a while and see if the zombies die naturally without any food.”
Andy was surprised. “That’s great! Eric, it’s perfect!”
“Obviously we don’t know what will happen on the way. But we have no choice, let’s just hope for the best!” With that, Eric stepped on the gas and they sped off!
When they drove out of the parking lot, it was much as Eric had expected. There were still a lot of zombies, but because a large number of them had already gone upstairs, they were able to get to the main road without any trouble.
What a scene! It wasn’t only the zombies, there were shops that had been completely destroyed, piles of rubble and litter everywhere, and the cars parked everywhere on normally busy roads. It was evident there had been some very tragic events on these streets in the days since the outbreak of the virus.
Looking out the window, the two men could not help sighing. All the signs of human civilization in Kings city, the most prosperous city of State C, had gone with the wind, leaving only garbage and abandoned buildings. It seemed that all of this was there as a mocking reminder that everything human beings had built up on earth was now history.
Luckily, the SUV’s built-in navigation system still worked. Andy typed in the address for a place he thought would be a safe neighborhood.
They encountered several crowded intersections along the way. There were so many abandoned vehicles that they almost couldn’t pass. However, this was not unlike before. After all, in a city with more than 5 million vehicles, traffic jams were just an ordinary thing.
When they came to intersections with zombies, Eric had to grind his teeth and press hard on the gas to knock them down. Hearing the thud of their bodies against the car, he felt… well actually it felt good!
The housing density in the northern suburbs was much lower than in the city center and the place Andy selected was a building that used to be a textile mill. But it had been deserted for many years because the company went bankrupt. Since they entered the area where the mill was located, there had been fewer and fewer zombies, presumably because the area was largely uninhabited.
They smashed open the basement door with their truncheons. Judging by the musty smell, the place had not been inhabited for years, and there was nothing in there except three spring beds.
After unloading everything from the car, Andy discovered a laptop in the trunk. This was also a useful supply! At least if worked, of course. Andy carefully moved it into the basement.
The two men looked around their new home. The shabby place was almost empty, with just the three old beds. And in their hurried escape from the office, they had only been able to bring some water, instant noodles and the bag of rice. It was evident that they would not be able to stay there as long as they’d hoped.
