Chapter 5-1 Rice

916 Words
What idea? Eric fixed his eyes on Andy at once. Andy scratched his head. “Eric, the IT staff in our building had a group, we used to meet sometimes in the computer room and chat together. I remember once we discussed these ID cards. Basically, all the cards for this building were made based on the same template. All you need to do to copy them is reset their passwords to the original password in the database. Then you could use one ID card to open all the doors. I didn’t think of it at first, but when I saw the warehouse card just now, it looks like the same kind of card.” Talent! Absolute talent! I knew I didn’t save this guy and give him my food for nothing! Ha ha ha! It would have been horrible to try and to open all those storage rooms one by force alone. Andy picked up the ID card and compared it with his and Eric’s entrance access cards. “Right, these two types of cards are different, but the logistics storage room on each floor should be programmed with this kind of ID card, because this type was carried by the building’s management office.” “Eric, now the thing is, I need an ID card writer. Although the password can be reset through the database, obviously the ID card should have the specific company’s password, not the general one.” Andy scratched his head again. “Doesn’t our company have one?” Eric asked. “No!” “Then why did you mention it?!” Andy also felt frustrated, but using his three years of IT experience, he quickly came up with an alternative. The company had a card reader for dining cards. Although it was different from the card reader for access control cards, if the built-in chip program was modified and the revisable card category was added, this ID card could also be changed using the same machine. After an hour of testing, Andy confirmed that he had been able to modify the ID card. The first test was the logistics storage room of his company. Before this, Eric gave Andy some lessons in how to use the crossbow and truncheon. After all, it doesn’t matter how strong you are, if you can’t handle a weapon then you stand no chance of surviving in a zombie apocalypse. Eric had the truncheon ready as he opened the door, while Andy was positioned behind him on one knee, aiming the crossbow at the door. With a beep, the door opened. There was nobody in there. However, it mainly just contained some out-dated promotional materials of the company, not many useful food or materials. There were some old work clothes on the shabby shelves, as well as some abandoned props for a temporary promotion. There was nothing of value. Eric grumbled and searched hard for anything that might be useful. Finally, he found a 50KG bag of rice in the corner, though it seemed that it had been there for a long time. “This is probably the rice from that charity event last year. Is it still edible do you think?” Andy covered his nose. “It smells musty.” “Are you out of your mind? A bag of rice can last ages. Plus, it’s very valuable. Go, let’s move it to the office.” It seemed that Andy hadn’t realised the importance of rice when the world was ending. A 50KG bag of rice was easy to carry and of high nutritional value. These days it was worth up to 500,000 dollars in cash! After Eric scolded him, Andy also understood that he could not use his previous worldview and values to measure the current situation. Lunch was just simple rice porridge. Preparing the lunch had inspired in Eric a revelation about the importance of water. After all, bottled water was running low. So while the whole building still had running water, he found all the containers he could and filled them with water. It was vital for cooking dishes such as the one they were eating. If running water were cut off, that would be devastating. After the meal, Eric began packing some instant noodles and water into his backpack. Andy looked puzzled. “Eric! Everything is right here. It’s all convenience food; it won’t go bad. Why are you in such a hurry to pack?” Eric laughed. “Don’t you think of anything in advance? If a horde of zombies suddenly turns up here and we need to run away, will you be able to pack this stuff up in the moment? It’ll be so much easier to get away if we pack now.” “Andy, did you hear something?” Eric put a finger to his lips to hush him. “No, Eric, you aren’t hearing things, are you?” There was definitely something there! Without a word, Eric took his weapon and rushed to the door. Following him, Andy took the simulated crossbow and rushed over. Sure enough, the sound of zombies’ was coming from the fire escape! Oh my god! Eric and Andy looked at each other. The zombies weren’t coming upstairs, were they? Was the security door broken?
