Chapter 4-1: Someone Else

807 Words
At seven o’clock, the alarm went off. When Eric heard the sound, he immediately grasped his truncheon and stood up. He did not put it down until he was sure that nothing unusual was happening around him. He had quickly adapted to this new, dangerous world and survival was the top priority! Now the only way to communicate with the outside world was the Internet, and he didn’t know when it might fail. Eric began frantically searching through the Internet, wondering what he needed to do next. He observed there was far less activity on the usual websites and forums he visited. And most of them were posts from trapped humans asking for help. However, everyone was in danger. Who would care about others? Eric realized that the most important thing for defeating zombies was modern weaponry. The army was the most heavily armed group in human society so it would surely play a major role in what was to come. But when he clicked on the army’s official website, it instantly returned an error message and could not be opened. Forget it. Maybe the army had already divided and formed groups to survive. How could he, a small ordinary person in the CBD, find the army in this situation? According to what Eric read on various forums, it was not uncommon for people to choose to gather together spontaneously. Some people had discussed their meeting places and the goods and materials that they needed to bring. Nonetheless, judging from the follow-up posts, it seemed not many made it. “What should I do?” Eric wondered aloud. Become a lone wolf? Seek out other humans to survive with? Of course, in such a dangerous world, human beings became very selfish. The principal aim of everyone was to live, no matter the cost. According to his experience of being in the wild, what was needed for survival was food and water, as well as weapons to protect against danger. Eric had all that with his supplies, so things had gone pretty well on his first day. Would the zombies starve to death because they had nothing to eat? Theoretically, it could be the case, but so far... Eric went to the balcony to look down. There were still zombies everywhere on the streets. Obviously, the enemy could not be expected to die out on it’s own. So the most logical plan was to go to a sparsely populated place without zombies, at least so that there would be no threat to life. From there he could find food to survive and then take further action. Flee Kings City! A bold plan began to form in Eric’s mind. But then he laughed and shook his head. He was now surrounded by so many zombies that he dared not leave the building. How could he escape from Kings City, an urban area of 400 square kilometers? It was a tough dilemma and one that Eric’s life depended on. So he returned to the computer and continued to search for the knowledge he needed. Just then, a message from his company group chats suddenly popped up in the lower right corner of the screen! “Is anyone in the company alive? Can someone help me? I’m alone in the computer room on the 36th floor. My food is almost out. What should I do?”— Andrew Wilson Oh, my god? This must be Andy from the IT department. He and Eric had been on pretty good terms before. Was he still alive? Eric quickly typed: “Andy, are you still alive? I am too! If you need to eat, come to the big office on the 35th floor. I have food.” It was not because he was generous that he was willing to share his food with Andy, but after a lot of thinking, he thought that it was unrealistic for him to leave Kings City alone. He must have a companion. At least if he wanted to get out in a vehicle, he needed another driver and someone to help with defense. Another message soon appeared: “Oh my goodness, Eric, you are still alive! After I woke up, I saw the situation outside and locked myself in the computer room. I dare not go outside. The phone is disconnected too so I haven’t been able to contact anyone. Now I know you are alive! Is your place safe? If so, come up to save me!” Damn it! Would I be able to message you if I wasn’t safe? Eric rolled his eyes, but now was clearly no time to mess around. He picked up his weapons and took the elevator to the computer room on the 36th floor.
