Chapter 3: Truth (2)
***
That was it… That was all that Lynn needed, his mind went blank and he opened his mouth to speak. “The truth is…” Suddenly he heard a phone ringing.
“Ah… that’s mine.” Ken said as he took out his phone and answered the call.
“Hello darling! It’s been so long since we spoke! How are you? Is Lynn around? Get me on speakers so both of you can hear me, okay?” The boisterous voice on the other end of the call was from no other than Amanda Cunningham, Ken’s adoptive mother.
“Ha… Hi, it’s been a while. We’re great, Lynn’s next to me and yeah you’re on speakers.” Ken answered all the woman’s questions in one sentence as he placed his phone on the kitchen counter.
“Hello, Auntie.” Lynn said in a polite voice as he heard Amanda’s voice.
“Dear! I’m so glad to hear you both. Have you been eating well? I bet Ken only ever buys food and never cooks, right?” Amanda said in her cheery tone.
“Well actually we were just making musaka now.” Lynn said as his heart had finally started to calm down.
“Is that so? Good, good! That reminds me of old times!” Amanda said as she giggled lightly. “Oh, here hubby wants to talk with you both!” She said as she handed the phone to another person in the room with her.
“Hello, Ken, Lynn.” The voice on the other end of the call sounded indifferent and cold with a hint of emotion in it, but just a little bit. However the two boys were long used to hearing just that voice. It was Albert Cunningham, Ken’s adoptive father.
“Hi, dad. I’ve been meaning to talk with you. I analyzed the last financial report you sent me and I can’t help but think that funds are missing. These small but frequent purchases of ‘office supplies’ don’t seem normal to me.” Ken began explaining as he heard his father’s voice.
“Yes, it’s been bothering me as well. But then I found out the cause was one of our employees had accidentally…” Albert on his end began explaining as well.
“I see… That’s quite a bothersome thing.” Ken remarked after listening to his father.
“Wait! Are you still making Ken work for you? He’s in University and has plenty of work of his own to do. Don’t burden him hubby!” Amanda said as she took back her phone from her husband.
“What’s wrong with Ken working for his allowance? I’m teaching him much more important things than that University would.” Albert said as he placed his hands on his wife’s hips.
“Darling, if it’s ever too much for you, you can always quit. Hubby has enough personnel as it is.” Amanda teasingly said as she gave a peck on the cheek to her husband.
“It’s alright mom, its better if I work for dad and learn while I’m still at school.” Ken said as to reassure his mother there was no issue.
“Look Hubby! You’ve already brainwashed him! Lynn, please take care of Ken, he’ll definitely forget to eat if he only works!” Amanda asked a favor of the student that listened intently to her words.
“I will, Auntie.” Lynn smiled as he agreed to the woman’s request.
“We have go to now, I’ll call you back another time mom.” Ken said and was about to end the call when his mother stopped him.
“One last thing darling! Your father and I are planning on visiting you for a bit in V city. It’s been so long that we haven’t seen each other!” Amanda said in a cheery tone.
“Really? When are you planning on coming over Auntie?” Lynn seemed very excited to see her again and asked with great interest.
“In about three days! Also if you can come meet us at the train station it will be great!”Amanda said with no less excitement than the boy that spoke to her.
“Auntie, you shouldn’t travel like that! Use the car.” Lynn suggested as the train would be far too slow and jam packed with people.
“I get carsick easily… I don’t want to throw up in Hubby’s car.” Amanda complained as both of them chatted along.
“I can drive you all back here, it’s not a long ride from the train station either.” Lynn suggested since he didn’t want to leave them walking.
“That’s my boy! I’m so glad, then we’ll meet there at five in the afternoon on Sunday!” Amanda confirmed one more time with a cheery voice.
“Yes, Auntie!” Lynn excitedly agreed and ended the call after they chatted a bit more with each other. As he turned to look at his master however, he noticed the boy’s expression had completely changed. “Is something the matter Young Master?”
“You seemed really excited to speak with mom.” Ken said with a bit of a displeased expression but otherwise indifferent tone.
“I’m sorry… I didn’t give you a chance to speak with Auntie, should I call her back?” Lynn suggested as he couldn’t read the other’s emotions. ‘Did I do something wrong? He looks angry…’
“That’s not it. You really don’t get it, do you?” Ken said as he moved closer to the man.
“What do I not understand Young Master?” Lynn questioned as he kept a calm expression on his face. ‘Ken’s been very moody lately… Is it because he can’t sleep properly.’
“Weren’t you going to tell me something?” Ken asked as he moved even closer to the other male.
“Tell you something?” Lynn had completely forgotten he was just about to confess his feelings for the man moments ago.
“Forget it… If you don’t remember that’s fine as well.” Ken said as he went to take out the musaka from the oven.
‘…that was close, if Auntie hadn’t called at the time she did… If I had told Young Master my true feelings then… he would definitely be disgusted with me….’ Lynn worried greatly that he wouldn’t be able to remain by Ken’s side if he confessed to him…
