Chapter Fifteen The immediate problem for Tom and his family was how to raise the dowry, because without proof that they had it, the arrangements could not even begin. They had nearly fifty thousand in the bank, if they added in Tom’s wages for the next three months; then they could either sell their machinery or put it on long-term rental contracts, since they were working for the Suksawats now, which would bring in another fifty thousand, but that left them a long way short. The only solution was to mortgage the property, which wouldn’t be a problem because it was worth more than three hundred thousand and had no debts against it. Tom, his brother and his mother made an appointment with the bank manager, and he told them that the loan would probably be granted in about eight weeks. So
