1029 Words
Jane Knight checked her red lipstick in the mirror and smoothed her lips together. She combed through her now auburn hair with her fingers, putting it up into a swirling bun at the back of her head, she secured it with a gold clip. She wore a black short leather skirt with a black button up jacket that had Jacqueline Kennedy vibes, large shoulder pads. Underneath the jacket, she wore a white silk button up blouse with a long white silk tie that she tied into a bow, then undid it, not liking the look now. She wore dark stockings and hombre stilettos in brown and red. She looked the part of a successful book author. She was carefull in preparing for her up coming photo shoot promoting her new book tour, A rebels Mistress . She would be kicking off the tour in the eastern Canadian city of Toronto. She was looking forward to getting away and meeting some of her fans. Jane was more excited about the fundraising soiree. She was getting ready to call her book publicist Sasha and arrange her flight to Toronto, when Jane received a phone call from Jeff, "Hey, beautiful, I have an idea for your fundraiser." She sighed, "What now, circus performers?" He laughed. "Well, actually more like a masquerade. We can provide domino masks and fans for our guests and encourage them to dress in Victorian costume. Lots of cleavage and corsets." She smiled to herself, "Okay, lets do it. I actually love it!" He said, "See, I do read your books, wasn't this in the first book of yours?" She said, "This is true, very romantic " He told her that he would have his secetary work all of the details out. "Well, God bless her little heart, she thought," feeling snarky about Jeff's long list of sexy secretaries. She was surprised when she went up to his office recently at seeing how many young women worked at the Jeff Allen tower. It was like they were multiplying. Jeff was so patient with her. She didn't want to think about her wedding night. She hadn't been with anyone since Max. She knew that she would have to move on and get past this. She shook away her thoughts and called Sasha. "Hey girl, I need a corset and a very sexy Victorian style dress for our fundraiser. Preferably in indigo or maybe scarlet. Jeff is insisting on a masquerade as a sort of a nod to my first book-The rebel lovers." Sasha laughed. "Only Jeff would be able to put all of this together on such short notice." Jane agreed. She was never one to spend money frivolously. She was learning to spend money. Mostly her money. She rarely accepted Jeff's offers to buy her the things that she needed. That was one of the reasons he was so drawn to her and wanted her as his wife. She wasn't a gold digger. Jane grabbed her coffee and headed out the door, her driver pulled up to her small ocean view house. It was Dave, her usual man. Jeff had insisted that she no longer drive herself. She was relieved and accepted his offer as a major convenience. For Jeff, it was a way to keep tabs on Jane. Dave reported everything to Jeff, well most everything. He didn't tell him about her love of his daughter Rosie. He frequently had to bring her to work with him. About a three months ago, when her mother had gotten ill -he had no choice. Jane had overheard Dave talking to his wife's doctor one day, he had accidentally left the front microphone on. Upon learning about his situation, Jane had insisted on bringing Rosie along for the ride. That was almost three months ago. She was in a booster seat now. They hid it in the trunk when Jeff was around. Jane spent her long car rides playing with Rosie in the back seat. "The wheels on the bus go round and round." Rosie loved auntie Jane. Dave was half in love with her himself. He felt bad keeping tabs on her for his boss. He had wanted so badly to tell her about all of the women that he had driven to and from Jeff Allen's penthouse. He wouldn't dare tell her now, he didn't want to ever hurt her. Jane asked Dave to drop her off at the hospital. She would run in to see Lolli. She had been visiting the elderly woman for a month. She had met her on one of her first book tours and they became friends. Lolli didn't have much time left, she was on the oncology ward. Jane made a point to see her every day. Dave kept this secret, Jane didn't want Jeff to know for some reason. Jane ran up the stairs, she needed the exercise. She reached the 5th floor and rounded the corner. She made her way to Lolli's room. It was empty. The bed had been stripped. She slowly walked to the nurses station, fearing the worst. Emily, her favorite nurse was on duty. "Hey Em, where's Lolli?" Emily smiled and patted Jane's hand. "Lolli's family came today and took her home. Jane smiled. She knew Lolli wanted nothing more than to die in her own bed. She smiled sadly, thinking about how much she loved her. She went back down stairs to her the waiting car. Dave asked her, "So how was she today?" Jane shrugged. "She blew this popsicle stand." He nodded, hoping that was a good thing. Jane got in and headed to Sasha's office to pose for her photo shoot. A tear ran down her face. " What's wrong auntie, you hurt your finger?" Rosie held up her own finger and showed Jane her ouchie covered in a band aide. Jane pulled Rosie's sore finger to her lips and kissed it. Dave was dumbstruck by her kindness and pure heart. She was very good with kids. He wished he had a nanny like her for his Little Rosie. He would never tell her this, she was way to successful to be anyone's nanny.
