Chapter 34 - Present
Just like any other morning, Giselle woke up to the sound of her cell phone alarm... The sound of birds singing was so pleasant that anyone else in her place would go back to sleep.
However, it was set to the highest volume, which was too much for her Werewolf ears that even if she wanted to ignore the device, she wouldn't be able to, especially when Edward complained about the loud noise.
... He had slept in her room the night before, and strangely enough, his father didn't complain as usual when the pup followed her after dinner...
"Mommy..." Yet sleeping, the little one murmured into the arms of Giselle, who could only smile, running a hand through his dark hair before carefully getting up without waking him…
Elle didn't need to go to work that morning, seeing how her grandmother closed the store for Christmas every year after delivering all the dresses commissioned to its owners.
Nevertheless, the young Alpha had other tasks that didn't follow the Human Holidays; and she still needed to do.
… Thus, she wanted to join the others in the Pack's house as soon as possible so she could spend the rest of the day with Eddy, as he clearly was longing for her attention more than usual since she came back home…
The fact that the pup was attached to her wasn't anything new, yet the idea she spent more than a day away without warning him made his wolf side anxious at the thought that she might abandon him as his birth mother had done.
... Edward was still too young to understand that, but every time he saw her and his father arguing, such fear would arise in his chest, while he only could understand that if Giselle went away someday, it was his father's fault for sure...
"Good morning." As soon as she arrived, greeting the others, the blonde she-wolf soon went to stretch after seeing how the others were already outside.
A few coats protected her skin against the cold weather while she didn't assume her animal shape along with the others, exchanging places with the future Alphas, who had been patrolling their land overnight to keep everyone safe.
"Have you guys seen anything or anyone out of the ordinary? Or perhaps found any new clue that may help us?" The owner of the voice asking such questions was Shade, who was a few years older than her.
And like many future Alphas from Mirror Night, his position was something he hadn't lost when his family joined them a couple of years ago after living as a familiar Pack for so long.
... He was an outstanding warrior, and probably one of the best among them, but also a lone wolf who liked to be alone most of the time, although he was a pretty good leader when needed...
"Not really... They don't seem to have made their way back here since the other day, but I would still be careful if I were you since it might just be a trap to get when we lower our guard."
Owen was the one who answered him, not wanting to lose to the other wolf who had a great chance against him, especially when even he couldn't deny that Shade was stronger than him.
"We will..." However, as it was expected from a conversation between Alphas, it didn't impress the other male at all, as he indifferently answered him. "Although I doubt they would attack us during the day, we never know what we expect from hunters."
"... They didn't just uselessly pretend to say something important while saying the same thing with different words like two silly teenagers, did they?"
Thinking about how stupid the other two wolves looked from afar without even caring whether they could hear her out or not, Paola eventually asked back to Giselle, who was helping her stretch.
... Her Alpha personality showed itself even more than usual then in the presence of the others who hold the same position as her right now...
Paola was the youngest among them, taking the place of Owen's young brother after she became a future Alpha last summer... Although she was still unsure if this title was something she would like to have in the future when most wolves were much older than her.
"They feel that this is something like a test or a trial. A way for them to prove they're the best Alpha for themselves and the Pack, so they can trust and follow their lead for the years to come, even if it might make them look a little goofy sometimes."
Unlike the other she-wolf, Giselle whispered her answer so that only Paola could hear her without naming either of the two men when they had looked in their direction before she made the teenage girl start to stretch again.
"But then, why don't I feel like this about you? You're an Alpha too, aren't you? So, shouldn't it make me want to compete with you as well?"
Asking her honestly, Paola had no evil intent with her words, although she was able to tell right away how uncomfortable Elle felt after hearing what she had said.
"Sorry! You don't have to answer me if you don't want to! I should never have asked you that!"
"No, it's okay. You didn't do anything bad... And you're not wrong. I'm nothing like you guys, so how is it possible that I'm an Alpha?" Finishing helping the young lady, Giselle said, getting up. "This is probably some mistake, but it will all be sorted out after spring, and the Pack has a new Alpha."
Brushing off some dust from her clothes, she finished her reply to the teenager who was already taller than her, and wanting to avoid another apology from her, Elle called out for Shade, asking him if they could go already.
“Yes, we should go now as Alpha asked us to be careful with empty spots between the guards’ shift turns.”
And simple as that, the older Werewolf agreed with her, sharing one last time all the information Owen and the others had told him with the she-wolves.
"... Wait! Giselle!"
However, Paola couldn't stop feeling bad for what she had said, halting the other Alpha before she turned into her animal shape.
“I’m truly sorry about what I said! I just meant that you’re so kind, unlike them. You always listen to what anyone else has to say first that I can not see myself competing with you to see who is better as I respect you too much for that!”
