Chapter 60 - Present - Aaron
Aaron's question about what Giselle was doing in the Pack's house would probably sound strange to anyone else listening to it.
However, as he mentioned the late hour, she didn't have to think too hard to know he was talking about the fact that she had always taken the morning shifts since she started helping with the extra protection on their borders.
"Shade asked me if I could swap with him since-" Initially planning to explain to him in detail, Elle started to say before she thought her Mate wouldn't care about something useless like that. "But that's just what happened. We switched shifts."
As she walked past him, the she-wolf genuinely assumed there would be nothing else left for them to talk about after she answered him. Yet, Aaron seemed not to share the same thoughts as her.
"Since what?" Using an unfamiliar tone in his voice, the Human man left her confused by asking such a question, as he had never been very interested in the Pack's affairs as his brothers were.
... Or at least, that was what Giselle believed...
"... What?" Therefore, it was to be expected that she didn't understand what he was talking about for a moment when her brown eyes met his dark blue ones again.
"I'm the one who should be asking you that. You said you exchanged your shift with Shade's, but you didn't finish what you were saying unless it's some kind of secret between the two of you."
Speaking again with that tone so unfamiliar to her, it was almost as if she could feel his hand holding her wrist, stopping her from going away, even if she was in her wolf shape.
"Well... That's not a big deal, but... I just thought it was something you wouldn't want to know about." Confused about how she could answer him, Giselle was only able to think that the man was acting strangely then, although it was hard for her to define his behavior with one specific word...
... She would love to think that he was jealous, but at the same time, she no longer wanted to deceive herself in such a way...
"... Elle? Aaron? What are you two doing there, standing like two statues?"

Close and yet so far at the same time was how I felt when Alpha Magnolia called out our names.
And although I didn't quite understand how to explain what had just happened, it was as if I was sad that someone had interrupted us…
"We just met by coincidence," While it wasn't a complete lie, I answered her, not knowing if Elle hadn't already done the same as well since I couldn't hear her words if they weren't directed to me when she was like this. "I was actually looking for you, ma'am. It's already quite late, so I think it's better if I take Eddy home now."
"Ma'am? Oh, God! Dear! You know very well that you don't have to talk so formally to me like that." I couldn't deny that she was right about how I sounded much more formal than usual when I spoke earlier... As well as when I thanked her for taking care of Edward after such a comment from hers. "You don't have to thank me, dear. I love to watch him, so you don't have nothing to worry about. Honestly, you can leave him anytime with me as he's one of the cutest pups in this Pack that I can't even wait to have a few more like him running around here."
Even though she was speaking to me, her eyes went to Giselle then, as if the two of them were talking about something else unbeknownst to me.
… Leaving me a little uneasy due to the smile she showed me when her attention returned to me seconds later…
"But you're not wrong. It's quite late already. And honestly, I would prefer you sleep here tonight rather than expose you two to any kind of risk outside." Taking my hand in hers, she spoke, obviously worried that something might happen to us at the very first minute we left the Pack's house... "Besides, he's already asleep, and I left him in Elle's room."
