I apologized to Mr. Alton the next day, telling that I was in a really bad mood and felt that I wanted to piss him off. As much as he was my favorite teacher and seemed to know a lot about what was going on in my life, I would never tell him about my jealous rage yesterday.
He laughed, believing it. “I knew something was up.”
I shrugged. “Again, sorry.”
Mr. Alton nodded. “That’s alright.” He gave me a hard slap on my back. “Now, have you started reading Wuthering Heights?”
“Err… No.”
Mr. Alton frowned. “Well, hurry up and start. You should read it with Nikita. She loved the book.” He suggested.
I nodded. “I will.”
“Alright, I’ll see you in class then.” He smiled.
I nodded. “Bye, sir.”
I walked through the halls and smiled when I saw Nikita but that didn’t last very long. Unfortunately, Jen was with her.
“Hey.” I said to Nikita, ignoring Jen’s glare.
Nikita smiled. “Perfect timing.” She said. She picked up her bag and then turned to Jen. “I’ll talk to you later.”
“Yeah…” Jen muttered.
Nikita and I walked away together. “Jen was about to start her lecture on how I shouldn’t trust you.” She said, smiling.
I frowned. “Oh.”
She laughed. “Don’t worry, I’m not taking any of her words seriously… I think she’s just upset that you’re best friends with… err, Justin?”
“Yeah, Justin. That’s his name.”
She nodded.
We were quiet for a moment, and I didn’t like that. “So, wanna go somewhere this evening?” I asked.
She hesitated. “I don’t know if my parents would let me…”
“Then let’s skip tutoring. We’ll spend an hour doing something else.”
“Like what?”
I shrugged. “What do you want to do?”
She shrugged too.
“Fine, then let’s go for a walk.” I carefully started to take her hand in mine. I didn’t want to move this too fast.
She didn’t seem to mind though. She let her hand hold mine and even stepped closer to me. “Oh… okay.”
I looked at her. “Unless you want to tutor me…”
She giggled. “Well, it’s not that I don’t wanna, but I was just wondering where we would go to walk?”
“Around the school I guess.”
“Well that’s a cruddy date.” She grinned at me.
I grinned too. “Fine, tell me what you wanna do and where you wanna go.”
She shrugged. “Let’s just walk then… but outside of the school.”
I laughed. “Isn’t that what I said?”
She smiled and walked a little faster, pulling me to the schools exit.
Time flew by quickly as we walked and talked. She told me more about herself. Like elementary school, and her best friends, and her likes and dislikes. She told me about the awards she won, and there were many, and she also told me about the things she has accomplished, and the things she wants to accomplish.
I told her about how many times I’ve been suspended and the things I’ve wanted to accomplish but never got too.
I then told her about my parents and how I think that they hate me and she tried to tell me that that isn’t true. I told her about my sister, who actually means a lot to me and I also told her about my friends.
It was then that I realized how different we were.
She was a straight A student who had a future.
I was a failure in school and life.
She has a family that loves her.
I have a family that would love it if I disappeared.
She has friends who care about her.
And I have friends who don’t give a s**t about me.
I wondered why I was going out with her again, and then when I remembered, I realized something. I stopped walking and Nikita turned around to face me. “What’s wrong?” She asked.
“Why did you say yes?”
“Yes to what?”
“To going out with me… and being my girlfriend.”
She thought for a moment and then smiled. “That’s a good question.”
I bit my lip, not knowing what to say.
“Well, I guess the fact that you are so bad and that you are failing and the fact that you are the total opposite of me should really be a turn off, huh?”
I nodded.
She took a deep breath and then let it out. “I think it’s because you were the one guy, other than Tristan, who actually looked at me and saw past this.” She touched her scarred cheek. “I never thought there would ever be a guy who liked me after what happened… Especially after Kyle dumped me after seeing me.” She paused. “And I definitely didn’t think a guy like you would like me. I mean, you seem like one of those guys who would probably tease me… like your friends did, but you never did such a thing.” She smiled. “I guess that made me really happy.”
I smiled, trying to hide the fact that I couldn’t breathe. Maybe it was because I felt terrible inside. I felt terrible because I was lying to her and I was the reason towards why all of this was happening.
I wanted to say something… anything… I just wanted her to know that I was sorry for what I had done without telling her that I did it.
I took Nikita’s hands in mine and made an attempt. “Nikita, I…” My voice trailed off when I saw a car pull up. I groaned as Justin started to honk his horn like no tomorrow.
