**Jane**
Why is he staring at me, is there something on my face?
"Why are you staring at me?" I said
He kept quiet as if he was thinking of what to say
"Oh there was something on your head," he said
"Really?" I said
"But I didn't feel anything"
"It was just some fly," he said
"Oh okay", I said
I wondered if he was tired. I mean we had already walked for about 20km before he started carrying me and it still seemed as though we were walking without a direction
"Aren't you tired?" I said
"You could drop me if you're tired, at least I've rested for some time"
I said that even though I didn't want him to drop me.
I enjoyed being carried
"I longed for you to say that," he said and he dropped me
"What do you mean? Am I heavy?" I asked
"I didn't say that," he said
"Then what do you mean you longed for me to say that" I said
"Oh look a house," he said trying to dodge my question
Finally, we found a place we could take refuge but is it safe?
What was a house looking for in such a deserted area? For I knew we were definitely in another area. One I've never heard of or seen before
He was about to knock on the door when I stopped him
"W...wait," I said
And then I dragged him away from the door
"What if it's dangerous?" I said
"How could it possibly be dangerous?" He asked
"It's the only house we've seen in this deserted area, how do we know it's safe?" I asked
"I honestly don't understand you anymore. You were wondering when we would see a house, now that you've seen one you don't want to enter?" He said
"No I'm just worried," I said
"That's why I'm here," he said
Hearing those words made me feel safe and gave me the confidence to knock on the door
"Who's there" an elderly voice answered
I couldn't make out if it was a woman or a man
"Sorry excuse me," I said
The door opened, it was an elderly woman. She was dressed in rag clothing, her skin looked all saggy and spotted
I was scared by her look, I was almost speechless
"G... good day ma'am," I said
"Well hello miss how do you do," she said
"I'm good ma'am," I said
"So what brings you and this handsome young man to my house" she said
"We came in seek of refuge but I don't think that possible. Is it?" I said
"Why not" she said
"We don't want to be a burden ma'am," I said
"No no dear, this house hasn't had young people living in it for 12 years now so I'd appreciate it if I had your company," she said with a heartwarming smile
I began to look at her better and I realized she wasn't scary at all, she was just lonely and lacked care
"I'll be glad to keep you company, I don't know about him," I said looking at him
"I'd stay but only for two nights," he said looking back at me
"Oh that's fine," she said
"Please come in"
I felt heartbroken after seeing her place. All started, the chairs were not in good condition.
Some were broken and rusty and the ones that were in good condition were all dusty.
It seemed as if she hadn't used them in a long time
Some parts of the roofs were leaking.
"I know it's a bit untidy, but please manage it," she said
It's as if she noticed I was looking around
"Don't worry ma'am, I'll ensure I put things in order before I leave" I said with a big smile
"Thank you, my dear. You remind me of my daughter Katie" she said
"Where is she now" I said
"She's late," she said
Oh no, don't tell me I just touched another person's soft spot
"Oh I'm sorry ma'am, I shouldn't have asked," I said
"No dear it's fine. It happened a long time ago and besides how would you have known" she said
"I'll be your Katie from now on," I said
This made her laugh. She laughed to the point that tears started rolling down her eyes
"Thank you, dear. I haven't had a good laugh in some time" she said
"What's your name"
"Jane," I said
"Oh Jane, what a lovely name you have," she said
"Thank you, ma'am," I said
"How about your boyfriend" she said
"Who?" I said
"The young man that came in with you," she said
"Damian? Hell no, he's not my boyfriend. He's not even a friend" I said
She laughed
"You can't deceive this old woman," she said
"How about I cook dinner?" I said trying to avoid the topic about
Boyfriend? We aren't even friends yet. How would she think we're together
"I would like that," she said
"Damian" I called out to him
"What" he said
"How about you come to join me, I'll need a helping hand," I said
"Sorry I don't do kitchen duties," he said
"Oh wow, you're part of those who think the kitchen is only for the ladies right," I said
"No, I just don't want to help you," he said
The old lady laughed at our scene
"And you said you're not dating," she said
Damian and I echoed simultaneously
"We're not"
This made her laugh harder. I was glad to see her happy but he had to stop saying that
"Okay if you say so," she said
"Damian can you please lend her a helping hand"
He responded reluctantly
"Okay Grandma but it's only because of you," he said in a sweet voice
Grandma? Did he just say, Grandma? I had never seen him be so sweet like that. It was weird but also cute
"Grandma?" She said
"It's been a long since I heard someone call me it feels good to hear it. Thank you" she said with a big smile
"Grandma," I said
And we all laughed
Dinner was ready and served so we all dined at the dining table
"If I may ask why are you guys here? It's rare to see people here. You only see cars passing" she said…..
