CHAPTER 2

**Jane**

"I'm so sorry, Mother; I didn't mean to hurt you," I said to myself as I cried my heart out.

It was customary for me to act that way. I had already been through a lot the whole day. How could father do that to me?

I wish I could turn back time to this morning when I talked with Mother.

I would never have said I was ready if I knew this would happen.

"Good morning, people," I said with a big smile as I woke up early.

"Good morning, sunshine," my mother said

"Good morning, Jay," Jenna said

"Look at how jolly she is this morning," Stacy said

"She never wakes up early, but see how she woke up early today," Bella said as we laughed.

"Good morning, Jane," Nichole said as she hugged me.

"Oh, Nichole," I said as she hugged her back

"Don't tell me you're already missing me."

"I am," she said with her cute doe eyes

"Who's going to gossip and gist all night with me when you're gone?"

"Come on, you can always come and visit me," I said

"Mother, can I just follow her," Nichole said

"You know you can't, Nichole, although you can visit her from time to time," Mother said

"Mother, please," Nichole said

"You can't go with her, Nichole," Jenna said

"Hold on a minute; you didn't request to follow the rest of us when we had to go. Why do you want to follow Jane?"

"Because I love her more than the rest of you," Nichole said

"Oh, I see," Jenna said as she took off her slippers to run after Nichole

"You'll love us more after this."

"Jane, save me," Nichole said as we laughed at their scene.

"Come on, girls, let go get everything ready," Mother said

"Everything has to be perfect as it has always been. The moon goddess likes everything to perfection."

"Yes, Mother," we said

We got up to start our activities when Mother called me.

"Jane, can I see you for some minute?" Mother said

"My girl," she said

"Your long-awaited day has come."

She wasn't wrong; this day was my long-awaited day. I was finally going to get my mate. The one that the moon goddess chooses herself

"Yes, Mother, I'm so excited," I said

"I know; everyone here can see the excitement written all over your face," she said with a smile.

"Are you ready for this? Are you ready to listen and be submissive to a man?" She said

"I was born ready, Mother," I said

"Oh really? If I can remember properly, you hate being bossed around. Are you ready?" She said

"Come on, mother. Hating being bossed around has nothing to do with me being submissive," I said

"Alright, if you say so," she said

"Yes, mother. Don't worry," I said with a big smile and hugged her.

"Okay. You can go get ready; it's almost time," she said

Yes, it was almost time for my ceremony. The guests started arriving, and the moon goddess was around.

"Goddess, thank you for gracing us with your presence," Father said as we all greeted her and showed our respect.

I began feeling anxious after seeing the crowd present to witness my ceremony.

"Jenna, is this how you felt?" I asked

"What do you mean?" She said

"Is this how anxious you felt? I was always amongst the crowd and never really stopped to think about how you guys felt sitting in front of the crowd," I said

"Oh, yes, Jay," she said

"We all felt this way. It's normal; you'll feel at ease after some time," she said with a smile.

"Are you sure?" I asked

"Yes, just be calm. Come on, let's focus. The ceremony has begun," she said

"We have gathered here today for the sake of the Crescent pack. We are here again to celebrate with them as their daughter, Jane would be her getting her destined mate by the gods," the moon goddess said

Everyone cheered

"Jane, step forward and place your hand on this concrete tablet," she said

"Yes, ma'am," I said with my head bowed.

You dare only look up to the goddess if you want to meet your end.

"I will now choose your mate," she said as the warriors chanted.

That's how the tradition works: the warriors chant as the goddess chooses the mate.

"Xander, step forward," she said

"His name is Xander," I said to myself excitedly.

I already loved his name and couldn't wait to see him.

"Xander from the moshlux pack, please step forward," she said

A handsome young man with black hair, broad shoulders, and green eyes stepped forward.

He utterly blew me away.

"Place your hand on the tablet right next to Jane," she said

"I can't," he said

This shocked everyone, including the goddess. No one has ever talked back to the goddess, let alone refused her.

"What?" She said

"W... what?" I said to myself

"I can't place my hand on the tablet," he said

"Why?" She said

I was curious to hear his answer. Why would my mate reject me?

"She's not good enough for me," he said

"W... what? I'm not good enough?" I said to myself

"I'd rather take her as my mate than Jane," he said as he pointed at Nichole.

"Y... you'd rather take my sister?" I said to him

"You're my destined mate," I said

"I'm sorry, but you're not good enough for me," he repeated.

People gasped in shock at how he spoke to me. No one had ever rejected their mate. This was the first time it ever happened.

Why did it have to happen to me?

"J... Jay" Jenna came trying to talk to me, but I didn't listen.

"How can he say that? He doesn't know me yet." I said in a low voice to Jenna

I looked around and noticed all eyes were on me. This made me embarrassed, and I dashed out of the house.

"Jane..."

"Jane, come back," my mother and sisters called as I left the house.
