Little Wolf The Promised Mate

Chapter Four

Chief Rivers

The chief knew Running Bears village was too small to handle the trouble the mountain clan was causing. He also knew of Little Wolf's powers. It has been one hundred years since the spirits have granted a child with those powers. It also marks the year of the skin walkers' birth. One child from one of the three villages will be born with that power. The legend says that if those two were mated , the skin walker would gain the special powers and use them wrongfully. This was a major discussion between the two chiefs. It is their responsibility to follow the tribal rules and spirit directions on picking out the mate to Little Wolf.

Chief Rivers mind links Running Bear to come see him. 'I need you to come to my village. Important.'

'I will be there. Bringing Chief Talking Bird with me.'RB links him back.

When they arrive at the moon village, they see several warriors on horseback. "What is happening?" RB asked

"My warriors are on their way to the falls. They are going to ask the spirit there to help them protect your village. We know that your village. The village of Misty Falls is small in numbers. My warriors will be joining your village till you are all moved to Moon Village. We must protect the legend. "

The chiefs talked about the young woman becoming of age. They prayed and smoked their pipe and asked the spirts to show each one who their mate would be. River spoke up and asked RB about Wolfy telling him Standing Wolf had asked many questions about her.Leaving Moon Village, the chief and RB felt very confident that their village would now be protected. Especially with the chief sending the extra warriors to help.They headed home with the news for the tribe to hear tonight.

Leaving the village RB walks by Standing Wolf. There's that scent again. It causes my wolf to come to the surface. I need to know who it is. Who she is. He thinks to himself.

"So my dear, how'd the meeting go?" Dove asked him as he walked in the house.

Closing the door, he just chuckled a little. "I should have known nothing gets by you.It was a very successful meeting."

"Good then, am I safe to say we will have added protection?" Dove looked at her husband.

"Well, I guess I forgot how you can read minds even from a distance.It always amazed me how you could read someone's thoughts without mind linking them. Sure is a great gift. The spirits bless you with."RB grabs some cookies and heads to his office.

Wolfy was having an off day at school. Buck noticed right away that her mind was somewhere else. He slides his chair over to her and nugges her. "What's up, little one. You seem to be so far away?" He whispered to her.

"I don't know. I keep feeling like someone or something is watching me. In my sleep, I kept hearing my name called. When I opened my eyes, no one was there. It was kinda creepy. "She whispered back.

Trying to make light of it, Buck gave her a smart allick answer. "Maybe all those stories you hear around the fire are starting to scare you. You are hearing things that are not there. That's it, not more ghost stories for you."He laughed.

"Okay, smarty pants, thanks for the help. Now go back to your own desk.."She shoved his chair over.

Buck and the girls were enjoying their lunch when Stalking Tiger made his way over. "So you fools are still trying to find out about the Waterfalls legend. I think it's a stupid idea, but old Willie is willing to talk to you three tonight. He remembers the story passed down from his father. It was a family member of his who was the gifted child. He came to my father and asked if he could talk to you three. I am just the messenger boy."Stalking Tiger winks at Wolfy. "Good luck with it, sunshine."

"That boy drives me crazy. I hate it when he calls me that. Wolfy huffs.

After school, the girls head to Old Willys' Cabin. It sits at the end of the village. He is one of the elders and very respected.Buck mind linked Morning Dove so she would know where Wolfy was. In return, she mind linked the other moms so they wouldn't worry.

"Come on in. Have a seat. I understand you are doing a report on the legend of the falls. It is a very interesting story.Many years ago, the spirit gifted a child the ability to change into many different animals in order to protect their village. That year, it was a girl child.She had a very strong pull to the old wolf den. Turns out that was her main spirit animal."

"You said she was drawn to the wolf den. Was that one animal she turned into?"Ducky asked.

"Yes, that was her main one. When she became of age, her powers started to show themselves. It wasn't long, and she could turn into a bear, a tiger, an eagle, and a panther along with her wolf. She used them to protect her village. After a few years, she fell in love with the grand warrior. He could turn into a large black wolf with mighty strength. The skin walker child was born in a different village,and he learned of the girls' powers.Any questions yet?" Willy asked.

"Yes, how did he find out about her if he was from a different village?" Fawn asked

"Word of the special girl passed quickly through the villages. Back then their were many, and they were large.He was of the skin walkers, and he could use his powers for good or evil. He chose to us them for evil. To get the things he wanted. Soon, he was able to destroy things with his powers. He also learned that if he mated with this girl, he would gain her powers. So he seeked her out. He found out she was to marry her mate, so he decided to kill him. He did so. When she found out she knew he couldn't get her powers because he would use them for evil and she didn't want that to happen. So she went to the falls and threw herself off the rocks. She landed on the big rocks below. That is why they look like they have faces. If you listen closely, you can hear her howling in the wind looking for her mate. They never found where the warrior buried him."Old Willy looked around. They were so intrigued by his story that they didn't realize he stopped talking.Snapping his fingers, he finally got a response.

"Thank you, Willy, for telling us the story. If I have any more questions can I come see you?"Wolfy asked.

"Anytime you girls need help with this, please come see me. My door is always open to you. I think it's great you are going to tell the story." Willy showed his guest out.

When Wolfy got home, she couldn't wait to tell her mom what she found out. "Mom, this girl had major powers. She could turn into a wolf, a bear, a tiger, an Eagle, and a panther.That is so awesome. She used her powers to protect the village. Willy told us the whole story. It's ashamed that the bad child killed her mate. She now howls for him by the falls. What a story. To think someone can really change like that is crazy but a cool story."Wolfy heads to room to do her homework.

"I heard what she told you. It's going to be hard to explain all those powers to her when she becomes of age. She doesn't even know that Fawn and Ducky are chosen to be guides with her. That will knock their socks off, as the girls say."RB shakes his head.

At supper that night, Wolfy talks to her dad about the story. "Is that why our tribal village is called Misty Falls?"

"Yes, we are called Misty Falls because of the legend and the mist that comes off the rocks below when the water hits them. It's been a sight that has drawn visitors to it for years now."Running Bears tells her. A soft breeze blows through the house, hitting Wolfy. She can smell the sweet scent of honeysuckle, and it cause her body to feel like it's on fire. Who is connected to this scent, and why does it stand out to me? Wolfy was thinking to herself .

"That is really something special. I can only imagine how she felt."Wolfy helps clean up after supper and heads to her room. She sits at her desk and jots down some ideas on how to present the essay. Her last thought before she called it a night was, "I must get pictures of the rocks faces. That will help explain things."She put her pen down and drifted off to sleep.
