11. But It Will Hurt You

______________________ . . . ~ JAMIE ~ . "They are still negotiating?" I asked as I enjoyed the door rub Maria was giving. I felt like I was modern royalty. Well, technically I am werewolf royalty, aren't I? "Most members of both the wizarding and werewolf communities do not want a war, especially after all the bloodshed and tragedies in the Great War." Maria shrugged, her eyes glued to the screen. I remembered when I met her four years ago. She had said that watching Korean dramas was a waste of time. Now look at her, she is as hooked to the shows as I am. Momma is proud. "Yeah yeah, not the best person to talk about bloodshed and tragedies with, but go on. Will there be no war?" I pouted. Maria gave me a flat look. She is a pro at flat looks and eye rolls thanks to her time with me. "And yes, I meant to sound disappointed about a war not happening." I smiled sweetly at her. "So answer me." "Jamie..." I sighed. "Maria, it's been four years. When will you stop doing that?" "When you stop acting like this." She said. "Why do you have to say things like this? Why do you have to portray yourself as this evil heartless villain who gets off on murder and blood and misery?" "Because I literally am a evil heartless villain who gets off on murder and blood and misery. That I have in inflicted on who knows how many people's families!" Three hundred and fifty two. I have inflicted all of those sufferings on the families of three hundred and fifty two people. But the world does not need to know that I kept count. "You were." She stressed. "It's all in the past now, Jamie. You need to let go of your past and move on." She pressed my foot too hard and I retracted it, hissing in pain. "Sorry!" She scrunched up her nose as she said it and she did not seem the least sorry about it. "Just get out of here!" I waved her away. "Go back to your quarters." Maria rolled her eyes and got up. "See you in the morning." "I am going to sleep in until twelve." "You have a lecture at nine." She looked smug when she said it. I, on the other hand, was not at all happy with this new knowledge. I will have to get up and go to college? In the morning? Why did I not think this through before I stupidly set out in pursuit of knowledge that I didn't really require. Sheesh. I am so done with myself. . . . "Why aren't they coming to some sort of decision? War or no war... Is it that hard to choose?" I was talking to Peter but my voice was as deep, scratchy and grumpy as my mate's. Oh wait, this was my mate. "Would you rather they impulsively decided on a war and so many people died, Alpha?" Peter was calling Rowan 'Alpha'. He only did that on public occasions or when he was completely done with him. My mate and I had this one thing in common - we annoyed the s**t out of people around us. "That's not what I meant. We are all here on the war front... All of us Alphas. We have left our packs unguarded. What if there is a rogue attack or a sneak attack by the wizarding community? Maybe we should all go back and come in when they let us know of their decision." "This is not some competition that they will set the rules and then call us back, Ro. Seriously, you and I know everything there is to know about it all but that does not stop you from whining, does it?" I know right. My mate is a total nut case. Dude is like twenty-six years old but I have heard people call him the epitome of justice and a lot of other things. Good things. But in real life, he is nothing but a manchild and an asshole. Well, I able only know about the asshole part because he never acted immaturely around me. But, thanks to another one of my hidden talents, I am aware of this secret character trait of his as well, my hidden talent being able to see through my mate's eyes randomly. I had no control over it yet but now I was in the level where I could do it once out of twenty attempts. Soon I was going to master it, because I loved having all the awesome tricks up my sleeve. The Moon Goddess may have left my side and fed me to the wolves (not literal wolves) but it had also given me a chance to experience the kind of powers that no other wolves could ever experience. Except for those who could. Those like me. "Every pack has a Luna to protect them in the absence of their Alpha." Rowan said, shaking me out of my thoughts and back to eavesdropping on their conversation. "Silver Crest does not have that. And that is one of its weak spots." Excuse me? You are saying this as if you had begged me to protect the pack and I had declined saying I was going to feed the pack members to some cannibals as soon as he leaves. "Not to mention, there could be people who would want to kill her whole I am away." Excuse me again, sir, but her has a name. Is he going to be like one of those aunties in Korean dramas who calls a woman with a kid who name is, say, Young-woo as 'Young-woo's Eomma'. So if I name my kid Sidney, is he going to start calling me Sidney's Mom? Or is it still going to be her? Or is he going to kill me as soon as my child is born? "Didn't you make sure that wouldn't happen by taking her away and basically declaring to the world that she has been taken away from the pack?" "I did that for pack safety." Rowan said. "The pack would have been in danger if anyone came for her." Wait a minute, I thought he did that because he thought I was going to attack in his absence. He made me come here because he was scared that someone would attack me? I didn't know this! He cares about me? Wait, he cares about my womb. "She is my only chance at continuing the Serge Alpha line." See. I am always right. I wonder how I ended up doing so many wrongs. "Ro, if you would just-" I felt like someone punched a hole through my chest and abdomen at the same time as my chair fell backward and my head hit the floor. I spit out a bit of the lemonade I had earlier as I helped my dangling legs off the chair and got up. I growled at the wolf standing in front of me, my eyes definitely burning red. "You think that's going to kill me, b***h?" I asked the stupid ghost. Oh yeah, I think I thought to clarify that when I say I can see the ghosts of the wolves that I murdered, I mean I can literally see the ghosts of the wolves that I murdered. And on some days, when I am too distracted or weak or powerless, they like to manhandle. "It won't kill you. But it will hurt you." He said. And he disappeared just like that because stupid coward knows he can't do anything when I am in my form. "It doesn't even hurt that much, idiot." I scoffed. "I was just taken by surprise, that's all." I hate my life. I sat down on my bed and tried to get back in Rowan's head again but to no avail. I need to practice more. I looked over at the clock. It read half past eleven. How the hell am I supposed to get twelve hours of sleep if I have class at nine in the morning? Maybe I should pull some strings? Oh shut up Jamie, and go to bed! . . . ~ ROWAN ~ . "Ro, if you would just-" Peter stopped when suddenly Rowan fell off his chair with a yelp. Peter's first reaction was to burst out laughing. He thought that Rowan had lost his balance like some clumsy child and had fallen off his chair. But soon he realised that it was not the case because Rowan was clutching onto his abdomen, his face contorted in pain. "Rowan, you okay?" For a moment, the Beta was scared that Rowan had been shot. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw that there was no wound. Then he helped the Alpha to his feet. "What happened?" Peter asked. "I don't know." Rowan had not experienced such a thing before. Actually, he had. But he was in combat at that moment and had thought that it had something to do with that. But this was random and inexplicable. What had just happened? He lifted his tee and looked. Both the wolves were confused to see a bruise that was disappearing by the second due to the wolf healing. "You got punched?" Peter asked. "It felt like it." Rowan ran his fingers through his skin. "You think it has something to do with magic?" Peter was alert at once. What if the wizarding community was using some kind of magic on them? The rest of the werewolves in the camp also had to be informed of this. "Or I was punched by someone invisible." . . . _________________________
