They both walked for what seemed like hours but Anna knew it was just the tension in the air that was playing tricks on her mind. Kane led her to the kitchen his grip firm, his never changing expression blank but yet she still had that sense of foreboding whenever she looked down at their joined hands.
The kitchen was filled with the maids that had assisted in bring food to the table, they all looked pretty busy and immersed in their works but the second Anna and Kane walked into the kitchen, they all stiffened up and then bowed their heads.
“Leave us,” Kane said. He turned around, not bothering to spare them another glance, probably because he knew that his orders would be taken seriously, no questions asked.
To have such power over such a large amount of people, deep down, Anna couldn’t help but crave it.
Once the kitchen was empty, Kane let go of Anna’s hand and the expression on his face slowly morphed to one of anger.
“What the f**k was that back there?”
Huh?
“What was what?”
Kane growled and took a few steps away from her, only to return back, pacing the kitchen with deeply furrowed brows like he was holding back from doing something.
To her?
He stopped right in front of her and placed a finger under her chin, lifting her eyes up to his burning gaze and in turn, taking the f*****g breath out of her.
His eyes reminded her of green flames, the ones that at first sight one knew to stay far away from it but yet its haunting beauty compels you to go closer. Kane was a flame that Anna knew would burn her in the most painful ways possible but yet here she was, only a breath away from his face and greedily inhaling his vanilla and woodsy scent.
“Do you see me as a joke? Or do you feel like you have some sort of leeway over me just because we’re mates?” he asked.
Anna swallowed and looked away from his eyes, it was easier for her to think this way, easier to breathe when she wasn’t looking into those green embers of his.
He was wrong. She didn’t think she had some power over him just because they were fated mates seeing as he had already made it quite clear from the very beginning that he didn’t want anything to do with her or the bond that was promised. She was strictly business. Like he said at table, all he needed from her was the power that she would be able to grant their pack.
“I don’t know Kane,” Anna breathed, “Do I have some sort of power over you?”
Her eyes were on his chest as she spoke, she couldn’t look him in the eyes and rather enjoyed the view of how the black shirt he wore hugged his chest and made every curve visible.
He was definitely a sight to behold, too bad the same couldn’t be said for his character.
“You don’t!” he said firmly, crossed his arms over his chest and managed to drag Anna’s gaze back to his.
“I would like to remember that whenever you try to open your mouth to speak to anyone in my pack again,”
He was giving her a warning, one that Anna hoped her emotions would actually heed to.
“Today should be the last time disrespect me in front of anyone or even when we’re alone,”
Anna couldn’t help but scoff and shake her head.
“You seem to be forgetting that you might be their alpha,” she crossed her arms over chest mirroring his actions, “but you’re in no way mine,”
Her gaze was steel, she needed to make that one fact clear to him, she has been a victim for so long and she’s sworn that in the short time she has in Kane’s pack, she would be anything but a victim!
She was done being the weak pushover whose life was only defined by a mysterious power inside of her that she couldn’t even control properly.
Kane’s eyes narrowed with dark intentions that she really didn’t understand.
“As long as you’re in Greythorn, I am your Alpha.”
“No you’re not,”
Chin raise in challenge and lips pursed and eyes clear with determination, Anna felt like the most badass version of herself she’s been in a long time but yet.
Yet…
The corners of his lips perked up and he shook his head like he was holding in a laugh.
“It has been years since anyone has challenged me in this manner,” he said, amusement in his tone. He brought his hands down from his chest and reached for Anna’s hair. She wanted to move away but then again she wanted to know what it would feel like, if he ran his fingers through her hair.
He patted her head instead, like she was a kid who he was trying to pacify.
“I will give you a few more days to get accustomed to the pack and maybe let go of that hostile attitude of yours,”
Anna’s lips twitched. Why was he speaking to her like he was speaking to a child?!
“You will submit, Anna…sooner or later but you will.”
“You sound so confident,”
“It’s not confidence,” he said with a chuckle, his hand leaving her head and Anna somehow, missing the warmth of his touch.
“It’s just common sense,” he shrugged.
“You will meet with the warlocks today, and you will learn how soon you will have to fulfill your fate.”
How soon she would have to die just because he wanted more power, great.
Anna gave a sarcastic smile and patted Kane’s shoulder, getting momentarily distracted by the hard muscles beneath his shirt.
“I decide my fate,”
And that was how things were going to be from now on.
Kane still had that smile on his face, like he didn’t take her declarations or determination seriously, she tried hard not to let her annoyance show on her face. It would be easier this way, for him to not take her seriously and doubt her skills. Soon she would be out of here and would surprise the s**t out of him…somehow she wished she would be able to see that expression on his face at least once.
“We’ll see about that, wolf spirit,” Kane said.
“Alpha!” May was at the door, her tone one of urgency. The second her eyes landed on Kane, she walked forward. Heels clicking on the marble floor and her brows furrowed.
“We have a problem,”
