CHAPTER: 4

"Are there any signs that Vienna Steven and her sisters have come into their powers yet?" Liam asked Stuart. "Not that I can tell. There is no scent of magic or anything. Her scent is almost undetectable. If their mother has cast a spell to make the girls undetectable, she has done a great job. You cannot even smell any residual from the spell that has been cast," Stuart said. Liam sat back and thought about that. Magic left a scent. If she was not using it, it meant that there was a possibility they were chasing after the wrong girls. The sound of his dragon snorting in his head almost made him smile. His dragon knew she was the one from the moment he saw her picture. Stuart took a right turn down the long driveway. The property was big, built back from the road to give them some privacy. The house was a light yellow with dark brown trim and had a white door. So, what is the plan?" Stuart asked as Liam grabbed his suitcase from the trunk. "Keep an eye on them. Try to get close and keep an eye out for whoever Mackenzie sends." Liam said to Stuart.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     ************ Vienna smiled politely as the attorneys came back from their lunch. She took her lunch later in the day since she let most of the secretaries go before her. Usually, one of the secretaries who had been at the company long enough to know the day to day working took position for an hour or so, would substitute Vienna while she went for lunch. When Rhea showed up, Vienna smiled happily. "Hey, how was lunch?" Rhea had been with the company for about five years, as the secretary to one of the senior partners. She was older than Vienna and sometimes treated her like a younger sister. "Too short as always," saying that Rhea walked behind the desk, pushing Vienna towards the door. "Your handsome friend is outside waiting for you. Can you tell me why exactly you have not slept with him as yet?" Vienna rolled her eyes and laughed as she grabbed her purse. "Because he is like my brother, and that is just gross." Rhea laughed. "Okay, but if you don't want him, why don't you ask him how does he feel about sleeping with a woman a few years older than him?" Vienna shook her head as she walked out of the front sliding glass door. Stepping outside, she instantly saw her friend Brian. He was leaning against one of the walls wearing his policeman uniform, his sandy blond hair blowing lightly with the breeze. Brian and Isabel were her two best friends. She had met them both very soon after her family had moved to their new home in Oakland, California. The three of them were inseparable as kids, and both of them had helped her when her parents died. Once a week Brian met her for lunch at a small restaurant nearby. Isabel's schedule made it difficult for her to get together, but they still saw each other as often as possible. Brian smiled when he saw her. His green eyes sparkled with laughter. "It is about time," he said before bending down to place a gentle kiss on her cheek. He placed his hand on her tiny waist as he led her to his squad car. "I still cannot believe you choose to pick me up in a police car. You know the people all around must be wondering why a girl working in a law firm is getting into a police land cruiser?" Chuckling and with a slight wink, Brian opened the passenger door for her before himself going to the driver's seat. "I let you sit in front, so if they are paying attention they will notice and be assured that you are not seating in the back seat, and secondly I have not put handcuffs on you." Shaking her head she laughed, imagining Rhea's reaction if Brian were to pull out handcuffs. Brian had been busily working on moving up from being a beat cop to a detective in the crime branch. He read people better than most and his instincts were almost always spot on. He tried to make it to the house for dinner on the weekends, to visit with her sisters, but he had missed the last few weekends because he had been investigating a case. Waving at their usual waitress, Zeenia, as they walked into the restaurant, they headed to the table at the back. Zeenia came to the table with two glasses of black tea. In her early fifties, she had gentle laugh lines around her mouth and her dark hair was mixed with shades of gray. She was a permanent staff at the restaurant. "You two are here a little later than usual?" Zeenia asked. Brian smiled, winking up at Zeenia. "Sorry, but this one kept me waiting there. I almost left her in the office." Zeenia rolled her eyes. "Please we both know you will always wait for her." Sticking her tongue out at Brian, Vienna laughed. "Thank you, Zeenia. I think a grilled cheese with bacon, and mushroom soup sounds perfect." Brian grinned, "Two please." Zeenia winked over at him before she turned, heading back to the kitchen to put in their order. "So, how are your sisters?" Brian asked her. Vienna leaned back in her seat. "Pretty good, I think. Zara is the exact opposite of me. she is a little social butterfly and always has some party or something to go to. Tiara is, of course, top of her class, and then there is Ziva who is...well, she is one of a kind. As for Clover, she is the quietest, keeping to herself. "  Zeenia dropped off their plates and they ate in silence, both enjoying their sandwiches. Vienna thought about the dream she had experienced that morning. The few dreams she had of her mother since the accident were memories. This was the first time that it felt like her mother was trying to tell her something. She reached up to rub her neck as she remembered the thing that was chasing her. What was it? She did not watch a lot of horror shows, so it was not like it was some sort of monster who was out to get her. "Come back to Earth, Vienna. Are you all right over there?" Brian asked. Hearing Brian, Vienna jumped in response. "Sorry, just got lost in thought." "Anything that you want to share?" Brian asked while watching her. She shook her head. "NO, just had this weird dream about my mom and I do not know but it sort of lingered in my mind," Vienna replied. Brian nodded sympathetically. It hit him hard when her parents had died. They used to treat him more like a son than his own parents had, and she knew their death had hit him as hard as it had her. Zeenia brought them the bill when they finished eating and Brian paid. "What? You paid it last time, now it is my turn," he said to Vienna when she wanted to pay.  With his hand on her back, he led her to his car, calling out to Zeenia that they would see her next week. The drive back to her office was mostly quiet, both of them were lost in their own thoughts. When they reached her office, Brian looked over at her. "So far it looks like I should be off this weekend, is it okay with you if I stop by and visit?" Vienna leaned over and kissed his cheek. "That would be great. I will tell the girls that if you are not working, you will be over at home." Getting out of the land cruiser, she waved to him before heading back into the office. Inside Rhea looked up and smiled. "How was lunch?" "Good. Sorry, but I forgot to ask him if he liked to sleep with women slightly older than him, but I will definitely ask next time I see him." Rhea laughed as she stepped out from behind the receptionist's desk. "When you ask him, don't forget to ask if he can wear that uniform," she then dropped her voice to a whisper as she leaned in close to Vienna, "And bring those handcuffs, while having sex." Laughing as Rhea walked away, Vienna stepped behind the desk and picked up her headset to answer the call that was coming in. "Theodore, Theodore, and Associates, this is Vienna. How may I help to direct your call?"
