He awoke as the light of a new day was slowly washing in through the darkness like a tide, filling the small areas between the trees with a pale, powdery light. There wasn’t a muscle in his body that didn’t ache; his backside was especially tender. It was a struggle to open his eyes and for a moment he fantasised about being back at home, in a soft, warm bed with Robert lying beside him. He imagined Robert’s broad, hairy chest rising and falling, and the gentle flare and fall of his nostrils as he breathed deeply and evenly in his sleep.
