Chapter Eighteen: Ed force-marched the empire’s army into Ra before midnight. They made better time than he anticipated. Better for the men, it would give them time for rest before they crossed the river and entered the city just before first light. This exercise needed speed above all else. The tower Ed sat in overlooked the river and bridge. He spotted the silhouette of the darkened city across the way. He could only imagine the fear that ran through the streets once the order had been given to shut the gates. Only a few candles sparkled in open windows. Most of the inhabitants must be sound asleep, safe in their beds or, if they were smart, hidden deep in the root cellars like vermin. Perhaps the people of the city realized the danger they were in and would shortly produce the murder
