Chapter Seventeen: Kai made his way back to the front, taking his place alongside Pet. He walked in silence for a good portion of the day, grunting any answers asked of him. He never spotted the elves who shadowed the narrow ravine, but he was certain they shadowed the train from the slopes above. The back of his neck itched as if a dozen pairs of eyes bore into his darkest thoughts. That and all sounds of the wild disappeared. Even the animals knew hunters were on the prowl. “We lost ten last night,” Pet whispered to him. “We need to rest soon, or more will follow.” Kai didn’t want to think of the dead.
