Chapter Thirteen: The manner in which the dead are cared for says more about the living than the dead. Kai was not happy when they abandoned the bodies of those killed at the compound to the elements. They did the best for them they could: laid out in neat rows, covered with mats to help keep them safe. Kai assumed it would not slow the scavengers down once the scent of death reached them. The young doctor needed to keep those still alive moving to safety. That meant making hard choices concerning the dead. At least a hundred people followed Kai into the mountains. This might be the biggest mistake of his life, leading these people to their deaths. No matter the danger the future path held, the decision was an easy one. He didn’t trust the elves, but long ago, he learned to trust the em
