Chapter 14 Scarlet raised her brow at him, “What are you implying?” She asked. Xavier walked closer to her, put his hands on the armrest of Scarlet’s chair, he bent to where they were at the same eye level. “You know what I am implying? Or did you forget so soon?” He asked her. “Your iris Scarlet, why do they get crimson whenever you get agitated?” Scarlet looked away from him, “I have no idea what you are talking about,” She uttered. Xavier scoffed, “Of course, you don’t!” He clapped his hand and looked at her with a pissed-off look. He pointed his finger at her, “There is something wrong about you, Scarlet Whitlock, and I swear to God I will find it out,” he told her in a challenging tone. “Nothing is wrong with me. If there is something wrong with someone, that’s you my nemesis,” she curved her lips into a sarcastic smile. Xavier stood to his full height, his intense gaze met hers, “Fainting, forgetting, Crimson Iris, and unexpectedly my body stops to listen to me when you summon me to do something. Are you still going to play the fool or have you considered me a complete i***t?” He asked her. Scarlet looked at him calmly, “I don’t have to— it’s a certified thing,” She shrugged her shoulders lightly. Xavier knew that he hadn't gotten mad yet. He was certain that there was something about her that he didn't know, there was something she was hiding and he couldn’t just pinpoint it. It made him curious, agitated, and frustrated. Scarlet's calm bitchy expression was also not helping him. He can’t be wrong about this. Even if he didn’t want to, he almost spent two decades with her. In this world, if someone knows Scarlet more than herself, it’s him. Their chat was disturbed by a heavy knock on the door followed by a light knock and then there was the clicking of the door. It opened slowly and Sal entered in all his glory, “Both of you didn’t come to school today, so I assumed something was wrong,” he said, and plopped his bag on the side of the chair. Neither Scarlet nor Xavier was in a mood to greet him and he sensed it. Sal put his hands in the air, his mouth turned into a ‘0’ shape, and his brows raised before he stood in between them. He put his hands on his waist— bit his lips lightly and turned his head to look at Scarlet. He bent to his knees and held her hand, “Are you not feeling well? You look so pale.” Sal's tone was gentle and kind. Too kind that it almost made Xavier puke this time. “I’m fine now thanks to our future Alpha. He took care of me,” She pointed her index finger at him. Xavier’s arms were crossed on his chest looking at her with a calm, demeaning glare. Sal got a little surprised listening to her, “Xavier?” He asked, his brows raised before pointing his thumb in his direction, “This guy? Future Alpha?” He was almost whispering now, the shock was evident on his face. “Yep. Apparently, our future Alpha has been taking care of me whenever I was sick. He had always been by my side— I’m so touched I’m afraid I will cry,” She said in a sarcastic tone, and Sal could not hide his amused expression from Xavier. He slapped her thigh lightly, “Scarlet stop, he is our Alpha. You got to show him respect,” His lips curved into a smile. Scarlet fake gasped, “Oh my, you’re so on point. I’m sorry Alpha Xavier. I didn’t mean to offend you, it’s the opposite. I want to show you my gratitude,” She batted her eyelashes at him. “Did you know, Sal, that I have never shown gratitude for all the things our Alpha has done for me? So silly of me! How could I do this!” She slapped her forehead dramatically. Sal knew that something had happened between them. Not a day can pass without them bittering with each other. He wanted to shrug this fight off but something flashed into his mind. He stood to his full height, “That’s kinda a bit true. When we were in middle school, I guess it was the first time in the cycle of fainting. We were in the gym, doing our usual pieces of training. You know how you used to be one of the most athletic she-wolves. You bickered with a classmate on that particular day— I believe her name was Niki. I am not sure, but I guess you both were arguing about who has to go next. She ganged you up and was instigating you constantly when suddenly you told her that she was a piece of trash and guess what— she walked to the nearest bin and dumped all the trash on herself, claiming that she was a piece of trash— it was a funny sight. As Niki was stealing the show, no one noticed that you had fainted but Xavier did,” Sal looked at Xavier, who looked like he knew what he was talking about. “I found you and him in the infirmary. You were bleeding from your nose and mouth. The school nurse was taking care of you but Xavier stood beside you till the time your parents arrived. What’s more strange is, when you got aware of it, you thanked me for taking care of you and ignored Xavier like he was a plague,” Sal finished his story and Scarlet's eyes widened. She felt like a heavy truck had hit her, knocking all her senses out. It was Xavier’s time to smirk. Scarlet eyes met him briefly before she averted her gaze. Her flushed cheeks showed him that she was embarrassed. Xavier was grinning— he patted Sal’s shoulder twice and watched an embarrassed Scarlet with a smug expression. “And the fact that Niki belonged to Xavier’s group,” Sal continued. Scarlet wanted to dig up a hole and bury herself in it. In her mind, she had already done it ten times. She tried her level best to avoid looking at Xavier. “There, there,” Xavier said to Sal, but his eyes were on Scarlet. “You helped enough.” “I did?” Sal pointed at himself, confused. “Now that you’re here— get her some broth from the market.” He told him and went upstairs to his room, his smug smile still plastered. He stopped in his tracks and watched them from a blind spot. Scarlet's face was in her hands and Sal was consoling him. “Did I do something wrong? It came out as an impulse, I swear! You know how I am always on Team Scarlet, right?” Sal asked in a desperate tone. Xavier rolled his eyes, “Pathetic,” he commented. “But on a serious note— what happened? Did the cycle begin again? You told me that the fainting has stopped and that your health is recovering,” Xavier was focused on listening to them. ‘Is she sick?’ “I’m fine, Sal. It must be my iron deficiency case,” She shrugged at the chat. Xavier was certain that whatever Scarlet was hiding, she had hidden it from everyone. If it is something Sal doesn’t know, no one close to her knows. He wondered if his parents knew anything about this. They must know, right? Should he ask them directly? How will his parents react to it? They will not believe him for sure and he will only get an earful. Xavier was curious and he had set Scarlet on his target. She is his person of interest and even if there is nothing, at least he was getting an activity to kill time in this world. Sal helped Scarlet to the guest room downstairs. He left the house, telling her he would be back with chicken noodle soup. Xavier descended the stairs slowly and peeked into the guest room. He saw Scarlet cradling a pillow to her chest. Her red hair spread from her shoulders down to her waist— she looked like she was tugged into a crimson red blanket. Her eyes closed— she was sleeping peacefully. ‘Her hair lengthens quickly,’ Xavier found himself thinking. He stared at her for a couple of minutes before ascending the stairs. He tried to keep it low and went back to his bedroom. He plopped on the bed, his eyes shutting down after a couple of seconds. All he could witness was crimson. A crimson sky, Fields, a crimson black hole, Iris Scarlet. . .
