Lennon took her to his residence known as the Meditation Chamber. His residence was made up of two courtyards. There was a reception area around the front yard, while a building with two floors occupied the backyard. It housed a living room and study room on the first floor, and a bedroom on the second floor.
From the outside, the building looked ancient and classic. However, its interior decorations were quite modern. Besides, it covered an unusually large area.
"So, this is your place." She looked around her.
There were bamboo forests and lawns in the front yard. A flower garden was tucked at a corner of the backyard, dotted with several Magnolia trees. There was also a small waterfall running down a pile of rockery into a pond.
"Why, is it no good?"
"Of course not. It can’t be better. However, staying alone in such a big place feels just so desolate."
"That was true, but in future..." He looked at her. "Things may be better, for there are two people."
Two people?
Then, she understood. "Do you mean that we will live here together in future?"
"Did you think we will continue living in the hotel after getting married?"
She looked at him and swallowed. Right, she asked for a marriage.
Although she didn't want to live here, she still smiled and said, "Alright, two is always better than one."
He gave her an evil smile and pinched her chin flirtatiously. "Two people can do so much in a long night. Don't worry, I won't let you have time to be lonely."
She shivered in her heart. He seemed eager to gobble her up now.
Turning her face, she pointed at a piece of calligraphy on the wall, and changed the topic. "In the past, my family also hung a piece of calligraphy like this."
Then, she looked at the red signature at the lower left corner. "That piece in my house belongs to the calligrapher, Mr. Chan. What about yours?"
Behind her, Lennon was silent.
She looked at the red signature and read, "L.e.n.? Who is Len? I don't think I've heard of him before."
She turned back to look at him.
He curled his lips. "It's me."
"You?" She was surprised. "Aren’t you... Oh, your nickname is Len?"
"Yes, it’s Len," he said and started walking toward the backyard.
“Len” was such a weird nickname.
Why would someone name himself “Len”?
Smiling to herself, she thought of something and quickly chased after him. "Lennon. Wait a minute, Lennon."
She caught up with him and pulled at his sleeve. “I know how to address you in future."
He rolled his eyes at her, "Don't even think it. Only my grandparents are allowed to call me “Len”."
"Ha." She shook her head. "Look, I definitely can't call you “future brother-in-law” anymore, since you're my man from now on. Calling you “Lennon” is worse, it's too polite. Since your grandparents call you “Len” in short, I’ll call you “Lenny”. Just like how “hubby” is short for “husband”. What do you think of that?"
“Lenny”? How did she come up with that?
But, it sounded cute coming from her.
He narrowed his eyes at her, snorted, and continued towards the backyard.
She smiled at his retreating figure. That derisive snort seemed like a habit that runs in his family.
"Where are you going, Lenny? Wait for me."
He brought her to the rockery where the waterfall was. Grabbing a handful of fish food from under the stone table, he sprinkled them into the pond.
Suddenly, a dozen fishes appeared to gobble up the food.
She faced at him and said, "Your grandfather seemed very much against our marriage. He didn’t even ask about me. Could it be that our plan has failed?"
He replied calmly, "It’s not my fault if it fails. I told you to be more careful in front of my grandfather."
"I'm already cautious with him." She spread out her palms. "I was so nervous that my palms were sweaty."
He couldn't help but smile, as he glanced at her palm. "If my gramdpa doesn't agree, what are you going to do?"
She shrugged. "What else can I do? I’ll have to badger him. Worse come to worst, I’ll tell your grandparents I’m pregnant."
"In order to marry me, you’re really doing everything you can think of, including making up stories."
She smiled and did not say anything. One can’t really regard it as just a story. What if she was really pregnant?
However, he moved close to her and said, "Nelly, both of us know very well that there are no real feelings between you and me. Why are you so eager to marry me? Not for a man, nor for wealth, what on earth is your motive?
“Don't use the Molly family as your reason. Through my observation in the past two days, you have many other ways to plot against the Molly family with your wit. There is no reason for you to trick me, and even sacrifice your own marriage."
"Are you praising my intelligence?"
"I'm just saying that you're crafty. Don't beat around the bush. Tell me your real reason."
She looked at him calmly and said, "You said it yourself. You won't ask me why."
He pinched her chin again with his fingers, but his eyes were cold. "Whether we get married successfully or not depends on your attitude. If you are sincere, I will naturally help you. But if you can't show even the most basic commitment, then why should I keep a cunning woman like you beside me? Do you think I don’t have anyone else?"
