I thought she was dead. I knew who she was the moment she appeared. She looked just like Cara. The resemblance was uncanny. After Saoirse left, James assured us that she was gone forever. We all thought that he had killed her, and that was why she never returned. My father was worried for years about her return, but once it reached the fifteen-year mark, we were all convinced that she was dead.
So when Cara turned eighteen the next year and didn’t phase, she caught hell. Beta James took back his support for his own daughter. Once that was known, the last few months of school were awful for her. She made it because her younger sisters suddenly took up the slack. It had been over twenty years, and I never thought twice about her mother returning.
