**NATALIE'S POV**
I was excited as I stepped into the bustling hallways of George Washington University in Washington DC — my dream university. It was a place I longed to go and finally, my dream came through and I'm here.
I could recall how I worked my butt off day and night, studying for the entrance examinations. I wasn't that intelligent but I tried my best. When I was in highschool, I was always called a novel nerd, whom no one noticed. When it came to other parts of my academics, my performance was usually poor. But when it comes to literature, I was as good as Shakespeare.
I was usually bullied and looked down on because of this, and it got me scared of my admission process because I didn't want to spend another session in this hellhole of a school.
Another driving force for my resilience was the fact that mum said we'd move in with my stepfather who stays in Washington if I passed, and I was more than delighted when I checked and saw that I got accepted.
It seemed impossible but here I am in the university of my dreams, about to study my dream course — Literary studies.
With a sigh, I looked around, wondering where the head lecturer's office was located. Mum took me there once and now I can't remember where it is anymore.
I adjusted my glasses and tried to stop some students for directions but they just looked at me and walked away, causing me to wonder if there was something on my body.
I suddenly remembered that I was given a map to enable me find my way around the school and smiled as I reached into my handbag to get it.
While I was still searching for it, someone bumped into me and the books I held along with my phone fell on the floor. I gasped and looked up to meet the eyes of a tall, dashing young man with chocolate brown hair and eyes. He looked slightly older than I was, maybe a senior?
His appearance was like that of a Greek god, his broad shoulders and muscular build easily rivaling that of a bodybuilder. He stood there and watched me pick up my books and phone. My phone screen was already cracked and I looked at him again, expecting an apology but he turned and started walking away.
“Hey!” I called and he stopped in his tracks. I immediately walked up to him and stood in front of him. “You should apologize for bumping into me.” I frowned at him.
He looked at me, his face expressionless. “You should be the one apologizing for standing in the way. Aren't the glasses you're wearing working properly? Because if they are, you should know this is a hallway and not a bus station.” He scoffed.
I couldn't believe my ears. Who the f**k did he think he was?
“I can see you lack manners. You bumped into me, broke my phone screen, and have the guts to insult me?” I scoffed at him. “Where are your manners?” I seethed.
“Get out of my way,” He pushed my head backwards and walked away.
“Jerk!” I yelled after him and he gave me the middle finger.
I huffed and looked at my phone screen. Today was my first day and some freak just ruined it. I won't forgive him for this and he must fix what he has broken.
Thankfully, I was able to find my way to the head lecturer's office. I was about to turn the doorknob when I heard voices.
“Maguire, you need to stop misbehaving. You're only off the hook because you're our star student. Don't think that'll make you immune, else I'd be forced to take disciplinary actions on you.”
I arched my brows. I didn't understand what the heck was going on in there. After a while, the door opened and I came face to face with the jerk that broke my phone screen.
I threw him a glare and entered the office.
“Natalie Portman, come in,” The familiar voice called out to me and I forced a smile as I walked up to him. “You're here for the keys to your locker, right?” He asked.
“Yes, Mr. Cedric.” I answered.
He handed over the keys to me and I gave him a small bow before walking out.
“Enjoy your stay here.” He said after me.
“Thank you, sir,” I replied with a smile but it faded the minute I stepped out and saw the bastard. He looked at me from head to toes, and I couldn't help the goosebumps that rose to my skin at his scrutinizing gaze. However, I need to let him know one thing and that's to do the needful. “You have to fix my phone.”
His eyes tore from my body and made their way to mine. “Stop being cheap and accept your mistake. For a new student, you're already acting annoying.” He glared and was about to walk away but I blocked his path.
“I won't tolerate you speaking to me like that. You can talk to others that way but not me because—”
“What are you going to do about it?” He cut in and moved close to me. I subconsciously took steps back but he followed till my back hit the wall. “I won't fix your phone and will continue being mean to you. What are you going to do? f**k me?” His voice was so low and sensual that I couldn't help but feel weak in the knees.
I pushed him away from me and glared at him. “Don't you dare try to flirt with me again. And as for my phone, one way or another, you will fix it!” I snapped and stormed out. I could feel his gaze on me but I didn't want to look back. I wouldn't dare!
I spent most of my day going through the courses and doing some registrations before lectures for the day ended.
I took a cab home and plopped on the chair the minute I entered.
“Welcome back, sweetie. How were the lectures today?” She asked and I groaned.
“Tiring. I'm famished,” I rubbed my belly.
“Dinner will be ready soon. Go freshen up and get ready to meet your step brother. He's on his way.” Mum smiled at me and I nodded, heading to my room immediately.
I had always wanted an older brother and figured having a stepbrother wouldn't be that bad… that's if he accepts me. Mum told me he didn't mind, and I couldn't wait to see him.
I quickly freshened up and put on my pajamas. I packed my hair into a bun and was hearing voices downstairs. No doubt, it was my stepbrother. I sighed, hoping this moment won't be awkward.
As I alighted the stairs, I could hear mum chuckling softly.
“Oh, Maguire, you're so sweet,” She said and I furrowed my eyebrows.
That name… where have I heard that name before?
When I finally got to the living room, my eyes widened at who I saw. He seemed shocked to see me as well. It was that jerk! That annoying bastard that broke my phone and didn't even apologize. That fool that tried to flirt with me.
Don't tell me… No, there's no way this annoying person is my stepbrother.
“Natalie, this is Maguire, your stepbrother.” Mum announced and it felt like a bomb just exploded in my head.
What the f**k?!
