Junie was mortified by what she’d seen. Seeing her mother wavering, she sprang from a mosaic park bench and sprinted toward her. When she reached her, she swept her arm around her, and her mother nearly collapsed against her.
“Mom, I’m here. Oh, my gosh, I saw what happened.” Junie wanted to scream at her father, but her mother needed her now.
“We have to get out of here.” Pressing a hand to her stomach, April added, “You should drive.”
“Okay. Just breathe. Deep breaths, like you used to tell me. I’ve got you.”
Junie grabbed the keys as they tumbled from her mother’s hand. She unlocked the passenger side and helped her mother in. She’d come over in Nana’s golf cart, but she could leave it.
April leaned her head against the headrest and closed her eyes.
