❤ Liv's POV ❤
AFTER learning about Aaron's illness, our previous routine resumed. We saw each other at the hospital whenever my mom had treatment.
Aaron is scheduled to have dialysis after my mom, so he comes in early and we spend time together while waiting for his turn. Sometimes, we would stay in the cafeteria. Other times, we would go out to a coffee shop, where he would treat me to a fancy drink and some pastries.
He even took me to the place where he gets the pastry box. We always have fun and we never talk about the treatment that he is about to get.
On the days that we would not be meeting at the hospital, Aaron would pick me up at the restaurant where I work at night. We would have dinner before he would drive me home.
One time, he was very excited as he told me about him possibly getting a kidney. Apparently, he has a cousin with the same blood type who is willing to donate one of his kidneys to him. He said that he'd be flying to the country by next month to get tested and prepare for the donation.
The good news excited me tremendously, and I felt really happy for Aaron.
I am about to get tested next week to check if I could donate one of my kidneys to my mom, and if all goes well, my mom will get a new kidney by next month as well, right around the same time as Aaron.
Aaron's excitement continued, and he started talking about the places that he wanted to take me to as soon as he got a new kidney. I just smiled as I listened to him. I know he will need to recuperate for at least a few months before he's healthy enough to do normal stuff, but just imagining us having trips together is making me excited as well.
Aaron is talking about taking me to places I've only dreamed about. I've actually never been on a plane before, let alone seen one in person.
---------------------------------------------
There are three tests that I needed to go through to determine whether I could donate one of my kidneys to my mom. There's a blood test, crossmatch test and HLA testing. These tests would determine if I am a match or if my blood is compatible with my mom's.
After it has been determined that I am a match, I will go through a full health evaluation to determine if I am healthy enough to donate. I have no doubt that I am healthy. I've never smoked or drunk alcohol, and I'm rarely sick. I also make sure to get enough sleep as well.
My mom had no idea that I was getting tested for her. I scheduled it during her dialysis. The tests did not take long, and I was in the cafeteria less than an hour after my blood was extracted. I was told that I should know the results within a week.
Aaron was already at our regular table when I arrived. There's the usual box of pastries on our table and an iced coffee drink. There's a big cup of hot coffee in front of Aaron.
Aaron smiled when he saw me and said "Hi, Liv."
Liv: "Hi."
Aaron looked at the cotton on my inner arm and asked "Does that hurt?"
Liv: "No, it doesn't."
Aaron still looked worried, so I smiled before sitting down and taking a sip of the iced coffee drink.
Liv: "Hmm, delicious. Thanks."
Aaron: "It's a salted caramel frappuccino. I had caramel drizzle and chocolate syrup put on top."
I took another sip and said, "Thanks again."
Aaron handed me a croissant, which I started eating immediately. After the blood extraction, I was advised to rest for a few minutes before getting up. I was a little dizzy when I was walking earlier, so seeing Aaron with the pastries made me perk up.
I got another croissant after I finished the first one and asked "So, how are you feeling today?"
Aaron smiled and said, "Do you want me to kiss you?"
Liv: "No, I mean not here."
Aaron chuckled as I panicked a little. I kept eating my croissant as I glanced at Aaron, who seemed to be very amused.
Aaron: "What would you do if you were not a viable donor for your mother?"
I looked at Aaron for a bit before putting my croissant down. I wiped my mouth and face with a napkin before saying "I really don't know. I'm just being positive right now and trying to be healthy. That's all I could do."
Aaron took my hand and said "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to rain on your parade."
Liv: "No, you didn't. That's a real possibility."
Aaron: "Tell you what. If that happens, I can help get your mom to the top of the list."
Liv: "Thanks. It wouldn't help much, though. My mom has a rare blood type, and even if she's on top of the list, it would be hard to get a match."
Aaron: "Really? What's her blood type?"
Liv: "AB, like me."
Aaron: "Really? Me too."
Liv: "Oh. What are the chances?"
Aaron: "Well, that could only mean we are meant for each other. We have the same blood type."
I couldn't help but chuckle as I kept eating my croissant. If I wasn't donating to my mom, I could actually donate to Aaron.
We walked to the treatment room together and waited until Aaron had to go in. I wanted to kiss and hug him, but we didn't want to make a scandal, so I just waved goodbye to him and wished him good luck. I don't know why I said that, and it made Aaron chuckle.
While I was in bed that night, I was thinking of possible scenarios. If I am not a match, I really don't know what I'm going to do.
For now, all I could do is pray and hope that I am a viable kidney donor for my mom.
