Ch 79

"Zayd, where are you?" I murmured to myself. Pausing midway, I inhaled deeply. His scent would be hard to trail here, but I continued to focus until I could feel him. A whiff of his scent filtered through, and I dashed towards it, only to end up bumping into something hard. "You okay?" My mate's concerned voice came, and relief flooded through me. That was why I could smell him. He was coming towards me. My senses were really weakening; I couldn't recognize his scent that well anymore. I wondered how Zayden felt every time around me, as we hadn't mated yet, and he was suffering more because of it. Unlike female wolves, male wolves remained strong physically, and I have always questioned it until today. What CM Samara had revealed to me was an answer to many things I didn't know about. Unlike me, Zayden's control over his wolf was weakening, and there was only one way for us to strengthen ourselves. I nodded. "I was looking for you." He looked as good as he had been looking the entire day, rocking the black suit similar to the one I had just lent to Alpha Reed. His eyes searched mine as if he knew something was up and he could feel it. Instead, he took my hand swiftly in his and lightly pulled me into him amidst the crowd. I bit the inner side of my lips, not sure how to initiate the conversation or how to avoid it. "Is something wrong?" He asked, his hazel eyes digging into mine. As if on cue, a huge drum resounded in the huge room, echoing off its high ceiling and making all our heads snap towards its source. The sound came from a balcony located in the farthest corner, where the band sat, and in the middle stood a person holding the drum where the boom had resounded from. We all narrowed in on him, waiting to hear whatever he would be saying. I wasn't in the slightest bit bothered by the drum or anything; at least it did a good job distracting Zayden. "Respected Leaders, Council Members, and others, it's time for the dance - in which you all may participate." The man continued to announce, and I stole a glance at the man holding my hand. He appeared pretty distracted, and as much as I wasn't fond of dancing, I couldn't have been happier for it to begin. I ran a hand over my dress, straightening it when Zayden let go of my hand. I gave him a look. Why was he letting go of my hand now when the dance was commencing? I looked at him, puzzled, as the announcer continued in the distance, and his voice was in the background now as my focus shifted to Zayden. "Zayd—" I began to say when he extended his hand towards me. "May I have this dance with you?" He said, c*****g his head slightly and not letting go of my gaze. "Miss Dawson?" he finished, my last name rolling off his tongue like silk. Hearing my name on his lips made me want to keep hearing it while he took whatever I had left to give. I took hold of myself and my speeding thoughts. They were beginning to lead somewhere I wasn't supposed to think of yet. "It won't be long before that name changes to Mrs. Castillo." He leaned in a little close to whisper to me, and even in the brightness of the room, I could still see the gleam in his eyes shining brighter with the words. A smile slipped through my lips as I lifted my hand in the air, for him to take. Although there was a lot that was yet to be resolved, the thought of marrying was not as scary anymore. I had forgiven him for something he wasn't even responsible for. I was ready for my life ahead with him, to get to see him in this light, but I wished he hadn't hidden his state from me. "I shall have this dance with you, Mr Castillo," I said, and taking my hands in his, he took me to the centre of the room where the first few couples waited for the music to begin. I took deep breaths and did a quick run-through in my head. I had, of course, practised the dance steps earlier in the room. Dancing was one of the basic things taught to us at an early age. Perfecting dancing was considered a great achievement for young heirs to the leadership, alongside basic fighting skills. Learning to handle both a dress and a sword was considered a balance in which a Luna encourages characteristics associated with handling matters with both severity and delicacy. We were the soft side of the leadership, but none the weaker. Both leaders had their roles, but as for me, I wanted to show our world that I could possess every quality of every leader, whether it be the Alpha or Luna. Zayden and I bowed down to each other as the first chord of the music struck. His body language softened as his shoulders relaxed slightly. The look on his face was priceless, and I watched him, amusingly mimicking the steps of everyone else. My curiosity was fed as I watched him dance in the most elegant yet fierce way a man could. He was the definition of perfection, and I wondered what else he was skilled at. We twirled and danced around the ballroom as the music continued. At some points, our bodies would collide, and that spark was tingling through the controls of mine. Zayden might be losing his control naturally, but he was making sure I would lose mine too. His body alone was capable of capturing me; his charms were capable of nothing lesser. Another twirl into his arms and the song ended. My back rested against his broad front, and for a moment, I wanted to close my eyes and forget about today, but that was until it hit me. We were done with the dance, and now the inevitable had to be done. "Zayd, we need to talk."
