"What," I mumbled in disbelief. Who would do such a thing? Protecting the rapists was one thing, but stealing the evidence against them, that too from the Alpha's house, was entirely another matter. My brows furrowed as I pondered over it until it clicked.
Esther.
She was the only one who had visited his office yesterday and was all too daring to wander inside the rest of the rooms too. What I couldn't point out was her motive behind it. Why would she do such a thing? She might hate me or not have the most ideal relationship with her son, but that still didn't explain why she would have stolen the drive.
"You must have cameras in your office. Didn't they catch anything?" I asked, watching his broad back as he stood across me, looking somewhere in the distance.
He grunted in response. "Nothing. The whole day's footage was wiped off."
For a moment, I wanted to tell him that Esther was over yesterday and she had been to his office too, but it was too risky. Firstly, he might not believe me, and that would be logical since I had not enough proof for it. The footage was wiped out for the whole day, and it could be the work of someone else. I had nothing to pinpoint it on Esther, and I would only make matters worse by making guesses here.
"Did you notice anything odd yesterday?" He turned around to face me.
I gulped slowly, contemplating whether to say anything but decided against it. I would deal with this matter in my way; after all, it was I who had promised Paula justice. I shook my head and looked away. His gaze lingered on me for a while before he hummed in approval.
"I'll take care of it. It won't be long before I will send them back to the Moon Goddess." His voice was deep, and I watched as he took out a cigarette and lit it.
I knew he would be able to do that, and I definitely knew they would be caught, but what scared me was the fact that they were still on the loose, and someone out there was protecting them. That person was certainly powerful, considering how they managed to infiltrate his office and steal the drive while wiping the footage too. There was not a single clue as to who did it, and I had one person on my list who could be responsible for it. However, going forward with that accusation would be pretty foolish, but by far, that was the only lead we had.
"I want to help," I murmured, remembering the look on Paula's face as she told me about the horror her daughter went through. "I can help you find the drive," I reasoned with him.
The smoke blew out of his mouth as he looked away. "I can't put you in danger. Stay out of this, Raya." His warning made my blood cold, but it was not enough to let me off his case. I promised a woman that I would get her daughter justice, and she was looking up to me as her Luna. And a Luna never fails her pack. The Lunar Pack had my mother, their current Luna, to handle these affairs, but who did the Night Walkers have? The beta's wife could only manage these matters for so long; I needed to step up and be responsible already, especially when my suspicion was the former Luna. It was like power in the wrong hands. I would get the title officially after marriage—but there were months left till then. Macy and Paula wouldn't have to wait that long.
"I have doubled the security on the perimeter and," he paused, making sure I was listening as he threw a look at me, "two bodyguards will follow you around from now on—even inside the house," he stated. It wasn't a question or a request, and that was what pissed me off.
"You are being paranoid." I stood up, scoffing. He raised a brow at me, his gaze looking down at me. "What's next? They'll watch me sleep?" I rolled my eyes.
In one swift movement, he was on me, gripping my shoulder and pulling me to him. The wave of his musky scent made my heart race, and liquid heat pooled deep inside me, something only he was capable of, but I didn't let it distract me. His eyes turned deadly when I collided with him. "I assure you, the only person who will watch you sleep is me." He hissed at me.
Dominance was exerted from his words, and the liquid heat helped no more, and I could feel it turning hotter with his words. I closed my eyes and reminded myself of what he did to me. My body and senses around him tend to lose their control and forget their morals. I would want to tear his clothes off and present myself to him while despising his actions at the same time. I didn't know why Esther thought that I would be his end because I felt like he would be my end someday if I didn't control my emotions and desires. His eyes lingered on my lips, and for a moment, I thought he would kiss me until I jerked my hand out of his grip.
"That was all I wanted to talk about." I cleared my throat. His hand reached out to grab mine. "About last night," He began to speak, but I stepped away.
"You were right. It was a mistake." I said before turning around to walk away. My reaction was spontaneous, nothing I had planned. I wasn't ready to talk or hear anything from him. What was he going to say? That he realized it was a mistake or that we were breaking the truce? Or that he wasn't interested in me anymore? Or worse, he wasn't interested in a woman throwing herself at him?
"Good Night, Zayden." With that, I walked inside, leaving him alone in the cold air. Whatever he wanted to say that night remained a secret as I walked off on him like he did on me. Although it was much less humiliating, and hurting than his, and neither had I done it intentionally. My heart ached to say those words because I knew what they meant. If anything from last night meant anything to him, then he would be hurt too now.
He would know how I felt watching him walk out on me.
