My foot tapped gently but continuously against the car's floorboard. The sound echoed in the car, filling the air with more tension. My thoughts charged up with each passing second. I gulped, trying to swallow my train of thoughts along with it. I tilted my head to focus on the men loading up our luggage, while Zayden directed them. He looked dashing in his grey suit pants paired with a white shirt. I watched closely as his muscles flexed while he put his coat on. That man had the ability to pull off any coloured suit, and it didn't surprise me either. The perfection he exerted wherever and whenever he went was unearthly, and he would pull it off like he owned perfectionism.
And that thought was suddenly scarier than surprising...
Our flight to Senenia Island was in a few hours, and I didn't get a chance to ask him about the text yet. He had woken up not long after, and by that time, I had a meeting with a client. Though it ended right before we were to leave, I hadn't gotten a chance to talk to him properly yet. Instead of calming me, it was making me a nervous wreck now. A part of me wanted to clear it right away, while the other felt awful for invading his personal space and how it would make me appear if I confronted him about it.
My train of thought ended once again with the sound of the door opening, followed by his scent. He seated himself and fixed his coat.
"Heard you are representing the pack for the Loup-Garou," his gaze shifted to me, making nervous tingles run down my spine. Not to mention, he gave me a good once-over. His eyes even darkened momentarily, but he shifted his gaze away.
"Yeah, I had a busy night," I said, tilting my head towards him, "What about you?"
He shrugged, "Sage was a tough nut to crack."
I raised a brow, "Really? She did spill everything yesterday."
Zayden turned his gaze back to me, this time focused. "She wanted to hurt you. Everything she said was to scare you; I doubt if half of it was even true because she had nothing to tell last night."
My mind once again travelled back to that moment. Sage tied to the chair, her sinister smile followed by her words. They had hit me like an arrow, and if it weren't for the Loup-Garou, then I would have taken some time off to recover. She did scare the s**t out of me, though, when she told us about that hunter after me. Thankfully, I felt better now knowing there was nothing more to it. Sage might have been using it to scare me only; she had turned murderous, and anything coming out of her mouth couldn't be entirely relied on.
"Drake will be keeping a close eye on her," he said, watching my face shift, but I immediately shook it off. The last thing I wanted right now was to spoil my week with thoughts of Elio and Sage. Elio was no more an honouring memory. He had turned into a void that would haunt me forever, and I wanted to bury it deep enough never to let it resurface. Neither of them deserved a second of my attention, and Elio met his end, and so would Sage.
I smiled simply.
There was something else bothering me, and I better clear it now before it would be too late.
Breathing in deep, I closed my eyes, trying to gather some courage. It was now or never, but what if he thought I was being invasive, and what if this put him off? I closed my eyes and released a breath. Well, I could ask him casually, but he would know; he was one clever man. I decided to go with the flow and turned to him.
"Zayd-" I paused.
He was on a call, looking deep in thought.
Fuck, try to stop overthinking next time, Raya. - my conscience said as I felt a low frown settle in.
I bit my lip hard and looked away, finally giving up. It was useless; maybe Audrey was trying some stunt, and she thought sending a suspicious text might disrupt our relationship, but I would only be contributing to it by doubting Zayden. Calming my nerves, I turned my focus to the road. The day had been productive so far, though, especially when Nicole called to tell me about Macy's recovery. She was doing well, and the signs of recovery had begun to show. I was truly relieved to hear it as there was no word from Holly about the drive. I only wished she would wake up in time and would be able to testify against her wrongdoers.
We arrived at the airport soon, and throughout the way, Zayden was busy with phone calls. I utilized the time to review the remaining document Mom had sent me last night. I would have to make a confident appearance if I wanted to foreshow a strong future for my pack in my leadership. It was not only about the pack but also about my position in it. I couldn't mess it up.
We arrived at the airport sometime later. It was busy as usual, except it brought back memories from the day I had arrived here. I couldn't help but think how much had changed.
"Don't dare to take the window seat," I warned him as he got out of the car. His brow lifted before a smirk appeared on his lips, "You can sit wherever you want, Red."
"You forgot that we're not the only ones paying for the ticket." I rolled my eyes. He c****d his head to the side, staring at me amusingly. His index finger stretched out and slowly lifted my chin to match his gaze, a mesmerized look in them.
"We own the f*****g jet. Who said about paying anything?" Another smirk and a wink later, he pulled his finger away, leaving me aghast.
What the f**k.
He owned the jet, and this was a private flight? No wonder he was sleeping that peacefully in the morning. Nobody with a commercial flight would be that relaxed about their flight. I licked my lips nervously and regained my composure to follow after him. We made it through the security stops and into the departure lounge sooner than ever. It really was a new experience for me, and I was suddenly eager for whatever awaited.
Upon arriving in the lounge, the first thing my eyes laid on was the glass wall giving a breathtaking view of the jet awaiting us. My eyes paused shortly as I took in the sight. I had always wanted to travel in a jet, and having this experience with Zayden was going to be amazing. My excitement lasted shortly, though, when a familiar sound interrupted the air.
"Oh Zayd, I have been waiting for you!"
Not only was it a familiar voice, but familiar words as well. My head snapped to the side, the air blow displacing my hair slightly. I watched as Audrey Boone made her way towards my fiancé and enveloped him in a hug.
