Chapter 19Gen’s shift passed as if there was no such thing as time. Cats came in, they came out, and so did several family dogs. Even the newborn kittens were quiet in their nestling place in the back area of the vet. Matt wasn’t there, either, nor was his name on the upcoming wall calendar in the break room. When Gen finally got the nerve to ask Susan about it, she let out an uproarious laugh. “Ding, dong,” she said. “The witch is dead.” “I think ‘witch’ is too nice for Matt,” Gen said. “But are you saying what I think you’re saying?” Susan touched her nose.
