Heather's POV
What a shitty friend I am. I begged Regina, the woman who hates being outdoors more than anything, to come along with me on this camping trip for selfish reasons. Now because of me, she is hurt and alone in the woods. First my sister, now my best friend. I take a deep breath and look over at Steven. At least one good thing came out of this trip. Too bad I'll never see this sexy, kind city man again.
A medic tries to advise me to get in the ambulance to take me to the hospital to get checked out, but I refuse. I'm not too surprised that Steven also refuses, not letting go of my hand. He gives it a reassuring squeeze, but I can't help the worry I feel.
We sit on the ground in the parking area as we watch helicopters and firetrucks splash the burning woods with water. I don't know where you are Regina, but I hope you're okay. Hang in there. I'm coming for you soon.
"Excuse me, does this car belong to either of you?" A police officer asks us, pointing to a car I have never seen before.
"It's not mine." I state. I look over at Steven and he is staring at the car as if thinking of something. "Steven, is it yours?" I ask him. "No, it's not mine, but I feel like I've seen it before at my company. I think it belongs to one of my employees, but it wouldn't make sense for her to be out here. She's not an outdoorsy type of woman." I hate that I feel jealous of a woman I don't even know. They most know each other pretty well for him to recognize her car.
"Could you tell me her name, so I can run it through the system to see if the license plate matches the driver?"
"Of course, officer. Her name is Dawn Vanderson."
"Thank you." With that information, the officer walks back to his patrol vehicle.
I want to ask him about this Dawn woman, but it's none of my business. It's not like he's my boyfriend or anything. I literally just met him yesterday.
We sit in silence until the officer walk back over to us. "Sir, it seems you are correct. The vehicle does in fact belong to a miss Dawn Vanderson. Where was the last place you saw her?"
"A few days ago at my company. Last time I saw her was the day I fired her. I had no idea she was even here. This isn't the type of place where she would go." Steven reports to the officer.
"Thank you. We will let you know if we find her or your friend ma'am." We both thank him and he walks back to his other co-workers and firemen. A couple of ambulances are here as well.
"It doesn't make sense as to why Dawn would come here." Steven thinks out loud. I snort. "Maybe she was looking for you." I sneer, and immediately regret how bitter I sounded.
I expected him to be angry at my attitude, but he had a grin on his face. "Are you jealous, Heather?"
I feel my cheeks heat up. "No." I boldly state. Clearly sounding like a lie. Which it was.
"Mhmm. Well, there's nothing to be jealous of. I made it clear since day one that I had no interest in her, but she kept trying to flirt with me. I fired her for dressing inappropriately at work. I don't tolerate my employees being unprofessional. I just can't figure out how she knew I was here though."
Not going to lie, I felt relief at that.
We sat there, talking about everything and anything. Neither one of us were tired and soon the sun was beginning to rise. The fire was almost completely out, but the search team still hadn't returned with anyone. My heart began to sink, thinking the worst.
I would be out there helping with the search, but we weren't allowed to. The second we get the all clear though, I am rushing into those burnt down woods.
