I heard Anna running down the hall as I opened the door to let Petal in. Her feet were not the only sound that let me know she was running. The sound of her excited yell, “Woohoo,” also let me know she was moving quickly down the hall. Her excitement solely lies with the fact I agreed to us making homemade pizzas for dinner tonight. If she had it her way, we would make pizza every night for dinner. Not that I would complain, but I also did my best to ensure she tried other things. By the time Petal was in the house, and I had the door closed, Anna was standing in the kitchen doorway, jumping up and down while spinning around in a circle. The whole time, she continued to yell “woohoo” repeatedly.
“Hey, little miss, before we do anything, how about you walk back down the hall and shut your bedroom light off?”
Spinning around one more time, she sped back down the hall, shut off her light, and skipped back down the hall. I know I should have corrected her, but I didn’t. She was excited, and I would rather her be excited than upset. While Anna took care of her light for me, I walked Petal into the kitchen.
“I hope you don’t mind. Anna requested we make pizzas for dinner, so I figured we could make our own personal ones.”
Smiling, Petal followed me into the kitchen.
“That sounds wonderful. And I take it from her excitement she very much likes pizza?”
Nodding, I didn’t get a chance to answer more than that as Anna skipped into the kitchen.
“MmmmmHmmm. Pizza, pizza, pizza.”
Both Petal and I laughed. I shook my head while working on getting everything set up so Anna could wash her hands in the kitchen sink, along with getting everything set up so Anna could reach the sink to wash her hands and then be able to stand at the counter and see what she was doing. With all that set up, we went to work and made dinner together. The whole time, we found something to laugh at. All of us had fun as we put together our pizzas and got them in the oven. Anna stuck to her go to of cheese pizza. When hers was done, I let her help me put the toppings on my pizza. I didn’t do anything out there. Keeping it to pepperoni and black olives. While Petal used some sausage meat that I had for her pizza. With that, she made some green peppers and onions.
When we were done, I got all three pizzas in the oven. By the time I was done, Petal had the counter cleaned off. Anna and she were already at the sink washing their hands again. Walking over to them, I waited for them to finish so I could do the same.
“How long with the pizzas take to cook?”
“About fifteen minutes.”
Nodding, Petal dried her hands.
“Hmm, that might be enough time…After lunch with my dad today, I went shopping and found a game Anna might like. I don’t know if she is even into games, but I thought she might at least like this one.”
Walking over to a bag Petal had brought in, she pulled out a My Little Ponies Candy Land game. The sight of it had Anna jumping up and down again.
“Oh, oh, can we play it please daddy?”
Nodding, I finished washing my hands and drying them as Anna jumped down from her step stool in front of the sink.
“Yippee.”
Grabbing Petal, Anna pulled her over to the small round table sitting on the other side of the room. If I were to sell the house, the area the table was sitting in would be listed as an eat-in kitchen, with no official dining room listed. But for Anna and me, it was the perfect little dining room. The game instantly became Anna’s new favorite. Candy Land was already one she very much liked to play, but now it was her favorite game. I am sure there would be no playing any other game with her for a while. But as I said before, I wouldn’t complain about it. The game made her happy. She was enjoying the game so much that when it was time to get the pizzas from the oven and have dinner, she was disappointed and not ready to finish it. Even still, after a minute or two, she sat and ate a slice of her pizza. The game was forgotten by the time we were done eating. Her focus now is on the movie we were going to watch after. A My Little Pony movie is what she chose, as I expected she would.
Through everything, Petal seemed to be enjoying herself. I hoped she was and wasn’t pretending. Anna was my life, and this was what a night with the two of us looked like. Something I didn’t plan on changing anytime soon. At least not while Anna was still excited about moments like this. Petal didn’t even seem bothered when Anna insisted on sitting between the two of us. Not that Anna made it more than ten minutes into the movie before she passed out.
Waiting another five or so minutes after Anna was out, I made sure she was completely asleep. Then I got up from the couch and picked her up. The Movement woke her a little, but I moved slowly. With her in my arms, I stood next to the couch, waiting for her to close her eyes again and go back to sleep. It didn’t take long at all before she was completely back out and sleeping.
“I am going to go put her in her bed. You are more than welcome to change the movie.”
Nodding, Petal grabbed the remote. I didn’t stay long enough to see what she decided. Making my way down the hall and to Anna’s room, I ensured she stayed asleep. I was rejoining Petal when I was done.
