Chapter 4
THE TRUCK STOPPED in front of the house, dark grey in the misty street. The door opened, letting out a couple of men in different types of military uniforms. Tamerane knew the uniform of the low-ranked guards and she recognised the face of Commander Lakrey, but she didn’t remember seeing the grey uniforms of the other two men.
They spoke briefly to each other, and then Commander Lakrey entered the yard to the house.
Tamerane shifted her weight from one foot to the other so that she could see the door without having to touch the curtain.
She heard the front door open. Her father , standing in the hallway, said something, but she couldn’t make out his words through the door. Commander Lakrey replied. He laughed.
“Come away from that window, dear,” her mother said behind her. S
