Chapter 7Eli wanted to sleep. He was exhausted, and the quiet of the office was lulling him into a false sense of safety. There was a scent in there that had his muscles unclench, a spicy, masculine scent. He didn’t think it was cologne, and he couldn’t remember having smelled it on Jaecar in the car, but there had been too much going on for him to notice. When too many emotions were around him, his other senses took a step back even if he didn’t try to block everything out. He couldn’t remember what he’d seen or smelled if he had to battle the onslaught of too many reactions. The stacks of papers were neatly sorted on the sturdy desk, a painting of a misty forest hung on the wall.
