“I don't know,” I reply, looking for the keys. They were supposed to be hanging on the wall somewhere.
“Mummy! I think we're going to be saved!” I see Hank jumping on top of his mum. Hank’s mum. I don't know her name. Ever since she's been here, she couldn't speak, so no one knows what her name is but she's always weak. Her body doesn't accept the food that is given here. So she starves and gives her food to Hank.
I find the keys hanging on the wall, and I go around opening everyone's cell doors.
“Mummy! Come on,” Hank tries pulling his mum out and she smiles at him softly.
“Why do you mean you can't? Come on mummy!” he tries to pull her up again but she doesn't move.
“Hank..”Adam walks up to him as I open up the last door to a guy. He's always been quiet. Never saying a word. Never moving from his corner.
“We've got to go, sir,” I say politely.
“I'll stay here,” he replies his voice deep and rough.
“I'll stay with her,” he gets up and walks out of the cell. He walks towards Hank’s cell who's crying.
He walks inside and sits down next to Hank’s mom.
“She can't walk. She's not going to be able to get out of here, and I'm not going to leave her alone. Take Hank with you guys and take him home. To his home. The Red Moon Pack. The rest of his family is there,” The guy says, his eyes on Hank’s mum.
“I'll stay with her,” he whispers softly, and she smiles at him.
“Mummy!” Hank calls out as Alice takes him out of the basement.
The other wolves follow her quickly. Adam stays behind with me.
He holds my hand tightly and pulls me out.
“They're in love,” he explains to me as we run out of the basement.
He pulls me out of the pack house and we're on our way to the safe house.
“So he stayed with her,” I whisper, a small smile on my face.
“He's always been in love with her. He came from The Red Moon Pack to save her when he realised what had happened. So he stayed with her. He never talked to anyone but they always mind linked each other,” he explains, pulling me along with him.
“Listen to me, Selina. I need you to go the safe house. I'm not staying here. I'm leaving, I'm going to go and travel the world,” he turns to me, stopping me.
“Take me with you,” I whisper.
I want to go. I want to travel the world too.
“I can't-” he sighs, “I'm going alone. I can't take anyone with me. Just go to the safe house,” he pushes me away slowly.
I watch as he turns around and runs into the forest further.
Get to the safe house and then think.
I take a turn around the house and stop. The scene in front is horrifying. Wolves everywhere. Fighting, ripping limbs off each other. The green grass is stained with blood.
“Selina?” I hear a voice behind me and I turn around to see Hank running towards me. He wraps his small arms around my legs tightly, crying.
“Mummy isn't coming and Alice left me in the forest. She ran away with Adam,” he cries.
I bend down and pull him closer, away from the scene behind me.
“Shush….it's going to be okay,” I pick him up and he wraps his arms around my neck.
“Just don't open your eyes, okay?” I say and I feel him nod against my neck.
I turn around to see the fighting still happening behind me. I can't run away with Hank. I can leave him in the safe house. Someone will look after him.
I can't leave him. I take a deep breath, and ignore how I'm feeling. I'll look after him. Somehow, but I will not let him be another victim of Alpha Jacob.
I run towards the forest and ignore the scene behind me.
I run further and faster.
Stop, Kai shouts in my head and I stop, freezing in my way.
Keep your senses open, she tells me and I nod, looking around and trying to hear what nobody else can.
There's people outside our border. They're not letting anyone go through. How did Adam and Alice get through? Maybe they didn't.
I look around me, trying to come up with an idea.
“Hank..” I place him on the floor and he looks up at me.
“I'm going to put you up on this tree okay? I don't want you to talk to anyone or anything. Not until I get back, okay?” I tell him and he nods slowly.
“Will you come back for me?” he asks softly and I nod.
“I will definitely come back for you. I'm just going to see if we can get through,” I say and he nods, lifting his arms up to me.
I pick him up and lift him higher, with whatever strength I can muster, and push him up on a branch.
“Stay there, and hold on tight. Don't get down until I come for you,” I say and he nods, holding on tightly.
I run forward, and further into the forest. I push myself against the tree, and take a deep breath to calm my racing heart. I'm about 20 feet away from Hank, but I can still hear him breathing. That's okay.
“Get everyone together,” I hear from across the border.
“And take these two to the back,” I hear. Adam and Alice’s protests follow.
“No!” I hear Hank’s voice and I ignore everything else, and run back towards him.
I see a blonde guy standing in front of the tree, with his arms crossed and glaring at Hank.
“Leave him alone,” I say, getting his attention.
He turns to me, his blue eyes glaring at me now.
