I said, “I didn’t know he’d done that. My counterpart wants to get him.” He grinned, “Yeah, I remember she’s quite ready to jump to murder.” Kayda grumbled, “And no one lets me.” I teased, “Poor you.” She shot back, “I’m glad you can acknowledge that.” Sarcasm and teasing were not her strong suit.
I said, “I’m happy for you.” He snorted, “She’s not mine yet.” I asked, “How does she act when people tell you to take a chosen mate?” He admitted, “She gets quiet.” I replied, “WHAT? She’s such a chatterbox.” He grinned, “Yeah, she is.” I advised, “I’d cut the hook ups until her birthday and air out your place. Or put in for a new cottage. Have your fresh start with her ready.” He rubbed his temples, “I’m going to get my ass beat.”
I said, “She’s worth it.” He agreed, “Yeah, she is. I’ll take your advice. There’s a couple who wants my cottage to downsize from their house. I’ll swap with them and get new stuff.” I told him quite seriously, “You get the same kind of mattress though. She should sleep on that perfection. Just not the one you’ve had me and others on.”
He laughed, “Damn Kassidy, you’re just not like other girls I’ve met. I can’t believe I’m having this conversation with someone I’ve had s*x with. Calmly. Other girls would be throwing s**t at me.” I asked, “Why on earth would they do that? We knew the score here.” Kayda replied, “Because most people have obnoxious feelings and deserve to be roasted.” Oh lord, here we go.
He shrugged, “A lot of women think I’m not serious. It’s rare that we both just want to have s*x. I can think of five that were ready to go. One even left before I woke up. I was going to feed her, but she was very specific about her terms. I find that refreshing.”
I told Kayda, “See? There is hope.” She snorted, “If you’d let me start roasting more people there would be even more of it.” I grinned. Roan parked the truck back at his place. I showered, he fed me lunch, then I gave him a hug. I said, “It was good to see you. I hope to hear all about your dramatic mating soon.” He rolled his eyes but they sparkled with a deep longing.
I jogged to the hospital when he went to the office to work. I stopped in and found Stella. I said, “I’m going to the woman I killed and set on fire’s house. I’ll see if there’s more there. I’ll keep in touch as much as I do.” She said, “You’ll have to at least set up something so I can monitor funds.” I agreed, “True. I have a computer. I’ll figure all that out. You heal and enjoy life here. If anyone gives you s**t you let me know. I’ll come back and give them what for.”
Kayda said, “Do you mean roast them?” I chastised her, “You have a one track mind.” She grumbled, “I haven’t got to roast and eat anyone in a very long time. I really thought with Blair I’d get to eat him.” I reasoned, “Maybe one day when we have our mate. Until then we need to be off grid.” She grumbled, “Fine but if we run into him again off grid I’ll take that as a sign I’m allowed to roast and eat him.” I agreed, “I mean it definitely would be a sign.” She took that.
I waved goodbye to Stella and got into the truck. I waved the Alpha and Beta as they were walking into the hospital, probably to see Stella. Roan was likely running a patrol or in the gym. They waved back and I took off.
It took me a few hours to get the house. It was in the middle of nowhere. This lady kind of had it made. Kayda said, “There is no one here.” I stalled, “What kind of supernatural was she?” Kayda hummed, “It didn’t register with me.” It hadn’t with me either. She wasn’t human though. I went inside after picking the lock. The only scent was hers. She had a computer and pictures of her and a woman. They looked so happy.
Kayda said, “Well, we reunited them. Except that one is probably not in hell. So, maybe we didn’t. She dishonored her mate by working for those who killed her instead of avenging her.” I agreed with that. There really wasn’t anyone who would be looking for this woman. I powered up her computer and had access to all her things. Bank accounts and credit cards included. I decided to use this place as somewhat of a base. If Stella came on easily enough, maybe when I met someone who could pass as this woman looks wise I could set someone up here. I knew I didn't want to live here long term.
I went outside and found she was a serious gardener. I grabbed several of the plants that were in pots and put them in the wheel barrel. I grabbed a shovel and found a nice rock she was going to use for decoration. I grabbed some more flowers and took off. I found a place just up the hill with a great view.
I got to work setting up a nice spot for the body I used to have peace and be at rest. At least her spirit. I fashioned a cross in flowers and put it down and planted all the flowers and placed the rock at the head. I wiped my hands.
I spoke, “I am sorry that I had to use you that way, but I hope that you rest easy here. It’s beautiful. I know this doesn’t really make up for what I did with your body, but I hope it helps your spirit move on.” The wind blew and I swore I heard a voice say, “I’m happy now. You avenged me too.” Huh? What the f**k? Kayda said, “I don’t know but I heard that too.”
I went back to the house and fired the computer back up and put mine up. I found the Wi-Fi password and joined the network. I googled Blair’s name and worked backwards. He was listed as wanted for suspected of murder. So, they hadn’t found him.
I opened the woman's computer and found she had a hell of a lot more than just texts. I combed through her emails. Pausing when I saw a picture. I gasped, “That’s her!” Kayda replied, “It is. That’s the woman’s whose body we used.” I read through the email and found they’d used Blair’s credentials and he’d logged the body into work. Had he killed her?
I found the after action report. The woman I’d killed ended up being the one who put the final nail in that woman. Literally, she shot her in the heart with a nail gun and watched her die. I told Kayda, “Aren’t you glad you helped roast her?” She said, “Yes, do you see my point? We need to roast and eat more people.”
I found the woman’s name from their files and googled her. She was listed as missing by her family. It turned out she was a partial demon just barely though. Enough to have been mated. One of the guys I saw was suspected of having something to do with her disappearance, but they had no proof. He had an alibi for when she went missing.
I found the number for her parents on an information poster. I got in my truck putting on Blair’s clothes I still had. I ran to a gas station twenty miles away. I used the payphone and dialed the number.
A woman answered. I imitated Blair’s voice, “Your son in law killed her. Her body was incinerated at a mortuary tagged as unclaimed. It was at Forest Help Funeral home. I used my credentials. My name is Blair and I can’t live with the guilt. He abused her and we covered it up.” I slammed the phone down and took off running, keeping my head down.
I made it back to the new place and went through the rest of the emails. I wanted to throw up because every unclaimed body I saw was on this list. Hopefully, with that tip the cops would be able to bring these families some closure.
I made a list of what I’d do. I’d open a bank account with an alias and transfer most of this woman’s funds there. She owed all the people she’d hurt recompense and using it to save the rest of the people these people were after was going to be good.
I needed to hunt someone named Francis down. He was loosely mentioned but there was no last name for him or where he was. That might be a long shot, but he and his family appeared to be behind this group. At least the full blooded rhetoric. That could be wrong though because he stopped being mentioned. Now it seemed to be a member of his family. Maybe he died. Hopefully, he did. I could start with obituaries for Francis. I interlocked my fingers and turned them out so they all popped. I said, “It’s time to get to work. Operation Saint Rita has officially started.”
Kingsley has started her own fight for those not seen! Did you guess this was a part of Francis' group? That are still going. LOL Melanie is going to be peturbed when she figures that out. Keep in mind K is not a secret sharer! So, she keep things close to her. We get to see Kayda is just ready to roast at all times! Did you think this was how K found out she's bulletproof and near indestructable? What do you think of Kenna's note to K? Answers some things about the effects and if they knew them all (they did not). What do you think of Stella and Roan? FYI we have run across Stella in the books, but I didn't give her name at that time. :) Join us on the book of faces The Ribbon Novels for more fun :)
