Kayda grumbled, “All days. Sometimes it’s annoying because you won’t let me ROAST people.” I looked at the ground so I could laugh. The Alpha came up to me, “Kassidy, are you alright?” I replied, “I’m sure your Beta linked you that I was.” He nodded, “We will take the girl in. I’ll never forget you saved my baby girl from getting kidnapped and abused by a crazy man convinced she was his.”
His daughter had almost been kidnapped by a rogue in the mountains. She’d wandered off from their cabin. The rogue was crazed thinking she was his. She was six at the time and werewolves can’t tell if other werewolves are their mates until both parties are eighteen.
I wanted to shift and scream because I hated that I knew things like that about other supernaturals, but nothing about myself. I sat in the waiting room closing my eyes. Trying to force myself to remember. When that didn’t work, I came up with a different idea on what to use the money I had for.
It wasn’t a paltry sum in this realm. I could probably get a house, but I didn’t want one. I wanted my cave. I felt better there. I could shift into Kayda and let her walk around the cave. It grounded us. I could use the money to start an underground operation. Alpha’s like this one would be willing to help.
Not all the people being abused would be a wolf that needed a pack though. I could work with that. I already had the phone for pickups. I could just fake this woman was doing her job and I’d really be saving them. I didn’t get details to know if she was sent all over or what. I had the phone though and that was a solid start.
A doctor came out to us. He said, “She’s ready to join the pack, Alpha.” They got up and left. The Alpha came back, “She’s in our pack now and wants to talk to you.” I nodded. I quickly went to her room. She looked much better.
Stella stared at me, “You saved my life.” I replied, “You survived long before I arrived. You had the balls to accept his rejection too. That’s all you and you rejected your pack in immense pain. Did that Alpha hurt you too?” She answered, “No, but everyone knew I was getting beaten and didn’t stop it. My dad didn’t like me either. All my other siblings got a wolf. I’m the youngest and didn’t.” The Moon goddess was a b***h.
Kayda snorted, “No joke. Not that I can say if our god and goddess are. I don’t remember their names.” I faltered, “You remember we have a god and goddess though?” She excitedly answered, “Yes! I do remember that! I remember something. That is good right?” I agreed, “It’s more than we’ve had since we got her. Maybe conversations like this will jog something for you again.” I knew my Dragon was happy which made me happy too.
Stella pulled me back to the present, “I want in.” I asked, “Huh?” She said, “I think we had the same thought about that phone. There are others in that poisonous pure blood bullshit rhetoric where mates can be abused for this, that, and the other. I think you want to start an opposition and I want in.”
I admitted, “I do have that idea.” Stella said, “Well, being the black sheep of the family meant I hung out with people others consider undesirables. Those people taught me how to race cars. I work on them and race them. I’m a good driver. So, anytime you need someone to get picked up and get out in a hurry I’m your girl. Plus, I’m somewhat of a math whiz. I’m a CPA.”
I held out my hand, “Welcome aboard then.” She asked, “Do we have a name?” I grinned, “Operation Saint Rita.” She nodded, “Cool. Patron said of abused victims. I like it.” Did everyone know this saint? I needed to figure out more. I told her, “I plan to use the phone and look into this more.” I took out a piece of paper and wrote down my number for her.
I admitted, “I’m not the best at answering my messages, but I get to them eventually.” She asked, “Are you going to stay here? The Alpha seems to love you.” I snorted, “I saved his daughter. He’s grateful but he definitely doesn’t love me.” Stella laughed, “Not romantically but the man does like you.” I shrugged, “People don’t tend to like me. I’m not like everyone else.”
She nodded, “I got that. I just don’t think they care like you think they do.” I raised an eyebrow, “You aren’t going to ask what I am?” Kayda perked up, “Maybe she knows.” I questioned, “How would she know?” She chuckled, “No, I don’t. I just learned long ago you can’t have people telling you things about them they don’t want you to know.”
I frowned. She shrugged, “At the beginning everything with Orsen was ok. I wouldn’t say it was great, but I’d had a crush on him my whole life. He was friends with my oldest brother. I don’t think we ever said much to each other, but I was always around if he was hanging out. I don’t really know when he became so twisted but my brother and him stopped being friends two years before I turned eighteen.”
I wiped a tear, “I was so happy he was mine. Then the moon goddess f****d me over again. I didn’t get a wolf and I got a mate that slowly turned evil.” She snorted, “I never got how supernaturals were abused before, you know? I was all ‘we are too strong for that.’ Then it happened to me. It started little and he’d always apologize. It was just words at first.” I nodded understanding that.
She sighed, “The first time he smacked me I ran to my oldest brother’s house. Orsen left me alone, but I couldn't tell my brother or his mate what happened. I was so ashamed. Then my mate came full of apologies. A bouquet of flowers, spa packages, a calendar of date nights to spend more time together. He even put time on his schedule to train with me. That last one didn’t ever happen. There were always excuses.”
She winced, “I’m certain everyone knew, but maybe it’s my fault for never saying what he was doing to me.” I argued, “No, it’s not. The Alpha, Beta, and Gamma’s job is to protect their people. They should’ve reigned him in. Especially since he’s in a position of power. If he gets away with the lower ranks can. What was allowed was abhorrent. You were the victim and no one helped you.”
She wiped away tears, “I’m so mad at them and now they think I’m dead.” I quickly said, “You can’t reach out. If Orsen finds out you're alive that group will be after you.” She closed her eyes, “It’s silly but I still love them.” I put my hand on hers.
I said, “Sometimes, you can hate what people did and still love them.” The loneliness hit me again and my Dragon whimpered. I hated that I wanted my family back so bad. I pulled up a chair. I admitted, “I don’t remember my family, but to my knowledge they remember me. I’m out here trying to figure out my s**t all alone. I’m not thriving, but I’m not faltering. I was very confused at first and they did that. I don’t remember anything because of a choice they made.”
I acknowledged, “I don’t know if I agreed. Or where they are. I know I miss them with all my heart. The loneliness some days renders me immobile. I see the holidays around here and families who are together. I always do that operation Christmas Child shoebox charity box because I hope the toys, school supplies, and hygiene items reach someone who desperately needs them. I write them a note too that I hope makes them feel less alone in this world because I desire to feel less alone.” I shook myself.
I told her, “While I don’t know what happened I know who I am now. I wouldn’t agree to not remember my life. I’m angry at them and desperately worried. I’m their hope and I don’t know what that means. I haven’t found the pieces I need to get my memory back. I don’t even know how really. Are they hurting without me? Are they dying without me? I don’t know.”
Kayda told me, “So, I know they are out there. They are not dead.” Ok, that was new. We needed to talk about that. Stella snorted, “Well, we make quite a pair in this Operation Saint Rita we are starting. I convinced the Alpha not to report this to the werewolf council. Or Alpha Eric Conners.”
I asked, “How did you do that?” She said, “I think it’s mostly the favor they owe you. This pack isn’t his ally, but they hope to be one day. They are good. I knew about them before. It’s a smaller pack.” I asked, “Why aren’t they their allies?” She answered, “Not because of Alpha Eric but this pack has bad blood with his dad’s dad. The Beta family's daughter ended up in a pack that got taken over there. She died when former Alpha Tag Conners took over.”
I understood that. I asked, “How do you know that?” She answered, “My dad was the pack historian. None of my siblings liked that stuff except me. When I didn’t get a wolf I was cut off from it all, but I was going to take over after him.” I snorted, “And now they have no one?” She grinned, “Nope. Everyone else but me failed the test to become the historian.”
I shook my head, “Man some people are just…” I trailed off. Kayda offered, “Stupid. Arrogant. Evil. Worth roasting.” I laughed out loud. Stella raised an eyebrow. I said, “My counterpart is listing off words that she finds adequate.”
Her eyes lit up, “What’s it like having a counterpart in your head?” Kayda asked, “Yeah, how is it? Do talk me up.” I snickered again, “She’s my best friend. I apparently have one I don’t remember but that doesn’t count. It’s nice to talk through situations with her. She’s more murder-y than I am. Ready to kill at the drop of a hat, but she protects me and vice versa. She also doesn’t like a lot of people.”
Stella laughed, “That tracks. At least she has someone like you. Are you staying the night here?” I nodded, “Probably. I’ll let you get some sleep. If I leave, use that number. We’ll get things going on our end.” She nodded emphatically but I could see her fatigue. She’d had quite the day.
I walked out and found the Gamma I knew quite well waiting for me. He said, “We’ve got a room for you. I’m not to take no for an answer. Luna and Alpha’s orders.” I asked, “Where is your Luna?” He answered, “She has the kids out of town, but her friends told her you were here. She demands you have a nice room.” I snorted, “Anything will do.” He laughed, “She scares me more than you do.”
Kayda said, “Well, that just won’t do. Let’s scare him. We are EASILY scarier than his Luna. She’s tiny and adorable.” I agreed with that assessment. I asked, “You’re scared of a five foot six she wolf?” He grinned, “Yes, and I’m a smart man for it.” I knew their Luna knew self-defense but she wasn’t a Warrior Luna. This pack loved her all the same.
I said, “You should get in an alliance with Alpha Eric.” He sighed, “It’s a work in progress. He’s obviously a good man, but I doubt he knows all the c*****e his Grandpa did.” I pointed out, “He didn’t know the man. Even I know Nathan Conners killed his dad and earned all the respect his dad lost.” He nodded, “I know. Alpha Eric has offered several times.”
I replied, “Then he knows what happened.” He acknowledged, “Probably. He’d want to know why we refused but he’s never inquired.” I laughed, “Then he definitely knows.” He shrugged, “True enough. Are you going to stick around Kassidy?” I checked his neck and he grinned. He said, “I haven’t met her yet.”
I asked, “And whose cottage is this?” He said, “Mine but I do have a room if you’re not interested.” Kayda purred, “Yes, please. He was good.” I gestured for him to open up the door. He did and I went inside. He pinned me against the door. He cupped my breast, “God, I missed these.” I moaned when he ripped my top off.
Strong Alpha male types turned me one. Kayda said, “He’s a Gamma.” I groaned, “Alpha male TYPES, Kayda. You know, like Blair used to be before he went all crazy. Roan is a Gamma, but he’s an Alpha take charge type male.” She agreed, “He is.”
He ripped my bra off and sucked my n****e into his mouth. I moaned, “Roan.” He growled, “Say my name, sweet thing.” He always called me that. Even when we met. I bit his ear, “Roan.” He growled and threw me onto the couch. He pounced on top of me and I rolled us. Which set him off. I was grinning as we both kept rolling on each other.
He ground into me, “You want the wolf, sweet thing?” I answered, “Bring it on, Roan.” He growled again and pinned me to the floor. I could get out of it, but I was desperate for release. He asked, “Do I need to go slow?” It had been several months since Blair and I had s*x. It wasn’t a turn on how snappy he’d been.
I shook my head, “Nope. It’s been a second but not forever.” He kissed me deeply and slammed into me. I screamed, “JESUS!” When did he even get naked? Did he have magical powers? He slid back into me. I moaned, “Roan, faster.” He grunted and went to town. We both came in an explosive moment.
We both were breathing hard. He grinned, “It’s always good with you, Kassidy.” I chuckled, “Same goes for you.” He pulled out of me and we walked into the shower. He asked, “How long are you staying?” I answered, “I’ll probably head out tomorrow.” He nodded, “Let me know if you need gas in that truck that’s not registered to you.”
I grinned, “To be fair, she was going to take Stella off and dispose of her. I’d assume she was going to kill her if she wasn’t dead when they reached their destination.” He growled, “How dare a pack dispose of a member who hadn’t betrayed them like that.” I sighed, “Evil people are everywhere. Even among supernaturals.”
We got out and he gave me a shirt to sleep in. I jumped in his bed. I moaned, “God, I forgot how comfy this bed was.” He sighed, “I know you’re not my mate Kassidy, but if you need help this pack would help you. You could even stay here.” I told him, “I like moving around. I just never feel settled anywhere. Plus, now I have this whole idea of a purpose here while I look for my mate.” He grinned, “What’s the idea?”
I answered, “Saving women and men from that crazy group with their rhetoric to beat mates.” He agreed, “That’s a good cause. Do you think it’s just wolves? Because we would have to go to the council about that.” I answered, “No, the guy I was dating joined them.” He growled, “Did he hurt you? Is that the mark on your back?” I asked, “Mark?
I jumped back off the bed and ran into the bathroom. I turned and saw my shoulder blade did have a dent in it. Roan said, “I wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t seen you naked before.” It was getting better. I wasn’t sure if I'd always have it or not. I answered, “Yes, that from him.” He growled, “I’ll kill him.”
I laughed, “I kind of framed him murder and he’s on the run. It would help if you could tell me where a nice area I could make a tribute to an unclaimed body I used for a set up that would be great.” He grinned, “You are something else. Your mate is a lucky man.” I tapped his peck, “Your mate is lucky too.” His eyes dropped.
I grabbed his hands, “She’s out there.” He winced, “I’m twenty-seven years old. Everyone thinks I should take a chosen.” I put a hand on his heart, “If you fell in love, that would be fine. As someone who spent a few months with you, I already know your heart is still reserved for your mate. Don’t give that up because everyone else says so.”
He looked defeated. I said, “Hey, the Roan from two years ago would’ve told them to shove it. Alpha Eric met his mate when he was thirty-two. Literally everyone still talks about it. I get you can’t throw him in their face, but his Lead Warrior is older than him.”
He sighed, “Prince Hastein is still single too.” I knew who he was. Roan had told me about the Hackura, but I’d known. The name Hastein Cambridge sent shivers through my body in ways I couldn't understand. It was silly since I’d never seen the man. Kayda said, “Well, he’d be a full on Alpha male. He could probably pin us and mean it.” I snorted, “Everyone who pins us, means it.” She replied, “But we could get out. I bet if he pinned us, we couldn't.” I was going to need another orgasm if I keep thinking that way.
I said, “And he’s older than you.” Kayda snorted, “You don’t know that. I didn’t.” I added, “Right?” He laughed, “He is.” I said, “There you go. Who can argue with his family? No one. I hear it’s bad for one’s health.” Roan threw his head back and laughed because he was the one who’d told me that.
He kissed the top of my head. He said, “I think the Moon goddess sent you back into my path so I would stay the course I wanted to.” His moon goddess could choke on a d**k and die but saying that seemed like a bad idea. Kayda said, “We should definitely say it. It’s true.”
He sighed, “Let’s go to bed.” We both got into bed. We didn’t snuggle, but I wasn’t really a big snuggler. He wasn’t either. I wondered if either of us would be with our mates. I honestly couldn’t imagine spending all night wrapped in someone’s arms. I was hot enough alone. I guess I’d find out one day. I fell asleep with one name rattling around my head, Hastein Cambridge.
I woke up with a tongue on my clit. I moaned as Roan went to town. He slid up my body and pushed into me. It was straight f*****g and release. God, he was good in bed. Most supernaturals were, but some didn’t care about their partner. Humans definitely didn’t. I’d dated a few. One was very sweet and more giving than some supernatural men. He didn’t have the stamina to keep up with Kayda and I though.
When we both came I rolled on my elbow. I wiggled my eyebrows and greeted, “Good morning.” He laughed, “Figured I should give you one for the road.” I grinned, “And I do so appreciate that.” He said, “If you need anything, call me.” I did have his number. I winced, “I should’ve told you I was coming. I would’ve but I really wasn’t thinking more than surviving. It was quite the night.”
He said, “I’d prefer you get here and survive than call. You were in shock. It was quite clear when you got here. You didn’t even notice one of our doctors doing an evaluation of you when you were waiting for word about Stella.” I stalled, “Huh?” He snorted, “Exactly. You were in shock but physically fine. You snapped out of it.”
I admitted, “I thought you first saw me outside the hospital.” He said, “No, I was observing. I was on the opposite border when you were spotted. It took me a second to run back to the hospital. I was updating the Luna and her kids.”
I grinned, “I do recall one of those girls is about to be eighteen.” He asked, “And?” I laughed, “And maybe you’ve been waiting all this time because she’s yours.” He stared at me before asking, “Are you trying to get me killed or something? Our Alpha may be one of my best friends but mating his baby girl might end that.”
I gasped, “You like her!” He blushed, “What?” I cackled, “You do! Your Alpha is older than you by far.” Roan wasn’t ever supposed to be the Gamma. His Uncle was but when he died without kids. Roan’s dad was chosen as the Gamma.
I said, “I think you’ll worry about the son who is your friend. You can’t claim the Alpha is your best friend when you don’t use his name. He’s a friend that you respect. His son is your best friend. This is juicy. I’m going to tell Stella to give me all the tea at what will be the most dramatic birthday party of all time.”
He groaned, “Let’s get you some gas, Kassidy.” He drove the truck to the gas station. I asked, “Can you tell me where the woman who owned this behemoth of a vehicle lived?” He laughed, “Of course. It’s on our border with Illinois. It also would have a nice place for a burial like you wanted. Quiet and few visitors.” I grinned, “That sounds like a good starting spot.” He warned, “Be careful.” I nodded, “Of course.”
I carefully asked, “Does the Alpha’s daughter know you hook up?” He sighed, “I’m sure she does. You know I don’t hook up with people in our pack. I also have never let her see me with anyone.” I raised an eyebrow, “And that says nothing to you?” He glared at me. I snorted, “You’re in denial.” He huffed, “I’m not in denial.”
I teased, “It is a river, my friend and you’re on a kayak in it.” He shook his head. I warned, “Be good to her.” He replied, “If she’s mine I’ll treat her like the Queen she is.” I nodded, “Good. I should’ve put it together when you helped beat up her ex.” His hands gripped the wheel. He said, “That asshole broke her heart and took her…” He trailed off.
I finished, “Her virginity.” He ground out, “I don’t mind the other guys she’s with.” I laughed, “That’s a lie.” He sighed, “Fine. I care but they treat her with respect. Her first ex just wanted to say he f****d an Alpha’s daughter. He’s lucky he’s not dead.” Kayda huffed, “Can we roast that guy?” I chuckled quietly.
