Dad got home late in the evening and the moment I heard him come in, I crept towards the staircase landing to be able to hear him.
“It’s all just a sick joke to them.” My father blustered angrily. “Nick’s the reason you quit the Council in the first place. Some of the higher-ups thought it would be ‘funny’ to send your son to accomplish what you failed to do.”
