Chapter 14Striding into the village together, side by side, Geoffrey tried not to scowl at the villagers who bobbed a curtsey or nodded at Ralf as they passed. “Ah, such a different reception now they know I am your intermediary.” Ralf’s tone was light but Geoffrey knew it hid the hurt. “Ignorant fools. You know—” Geoffrey dropped his voice to a whisper and leant into Ralf a little more, making sure to finger his sword as he did “—I had heard that some preternaturals actively help to protect mankind.” No point in courting a backlash if I seem too familiar with Ralf. “Now I have no doubts about it.” “You met several who lived and worked amongst us—” Ralf shrugged “—just getting on with their lives. I feel sure that’s the case with many preters, although we dare not say such things aloud.
