The DisappearanceMatters at the bridge to Diamond had improved since my last visit there: they let us through to the Diamond shore without much trouble. But as had happened the time I went there before, we were asked to exit the carriage. This time, though, Morton, Amelia, and I were escorted to the guard station, rather than the search house.
Two very dark-skinned guards dressed in the white and silver livery of the Diamond Family stood behind a counter. “What’s your business here?”
I said, “I am the Lady of Spadros. And I have urgent message for Julius Diamond regarding his son.”
“What’s this urgent message?”
“That’s for his ears alone. I can go there, or you can summon him: it matters not.”
This sent the pair into some discussion. They asked us to sit upon some silver-toned chairs
