Chapter Six: Cute Boys and Magic Powers

1457 Words
Now that I was ten I had to start shadowing my parents. One day this whole kingdom would be mine to rule so I needed to start seeing how my parents ruled it. We were at a celebration that took place every 6 months. It was purely political, my parents would announce the kingdom any changes put in place and announce what changes they’re working on nicely.  I brought Tamara along with me as a guest. This was a private party, only for nobles, politicians, dukes, duchesses and press. There were cameras everywhere and even press trying to talk to me but my mom always taught me to wave, say hello and walk away.   “Dude look at all this food!” Tamara gasped. She found happiness in the littlest of things. “When I told my mom I was invited she was thrilled. I think she’s really glad we’re friends. She didn’t really think I was fitting in at first. She was gonna let me live with my dad on weekdays instead of weekends but because of you I wanted to stay..” Tamara went on and on. We became friends the last couple months in grade 4 and we learned how to fly together.  Sometimes we play with the other kids, they’ve warmed up to her once I started to play with her. “I’m glad.” I said. I looked to my parents who were announcing some of the things they’ve achieved this month. “We’ve updated the curriculum for all our schools.” Mom said and everyone cheered. “They shouldn’t make it mandatory to learn magic in grade 5. We look stupid sitting there not being able to do it.” Tamara whined. I shrugged, “There are a few elves who can’t do it yet, plus I’m half elf I should be able to eventually, they should make it okay for us to shift on the playground. It’s more fun playing in our dragon form sometimes.” Tamara nodded, “They’re able to do that at schools in the dragon kingdom.” We had a lot of fun, we danced, ate, and played. Once it was getting late half the people had gone. I introduced Tamara to some of the princesses, princes, and nobles, she was shy of course at first.  It was about five of us now because a few had already left. We were with two of the princesses while the prince who was still here was practicing magic away from us but still in the front. “Dawn, look at what my magic teacher taught me.” One of the princesses said, I was the only one out of royalty and nobles who went to public school. They all had these amazing tutors and teachers. The princess hovered her hand on the ground and a flower grew. “That’s cool Hailey.” I was starting to wish I had magic, being a hybrid shouldn’t stop it, my aunt and uncle are hybrids and can perform magic. “I dare both of you to go and tell prince Quinn that you want to be his queen one day.” Princess Hailey and the other princess laughed. “You think they’ll do it princess Ari? “They don’t have that much guts Hailey, they won’t do it.” Ari teased. “I’ll do it.” Tamara mumbled. “I’ll tell him.” She looked at me. “Dawn will come with me as a witness.” I shrugged. “Okay.” We walked up to Prince Quinn. I didn’t know him super well. Sometimes my parents did business with his parents and we’ve played together once when we were younger. Quinn was making rocks spin, he stopped and looked up and smiled when he saw me. “Dawn. H-”    “I want to be your queen someday.” Tamara said in a whisper with her face bright red and the two princesses laughing hard at a distance.  Quinn looked at Tamara and chuckled. “I’m kinda saving that spot for Dawn.” I didn’t know what to do, what do I say in this kind of situation?? What was I supposed to say?? “I’m joking Dawn.” He laughed. Tamara laughed too. “Dawn say something.”  I couldn’t move, I looked down and all I saw was ice. “W-what?”  Quinn was stuck too. “Dawn you’re learning magic now too?” He tried to pull himself up but the ice kept him there.  Tamara ran off, she said she’d get my parents. I had actually done magic but I wish I hadn’t done it like this! “I didn’t know I could, this is the first time Prince Quinn and I’m so sorry.” Quinn laughed. “I didn’t mean to take back what I said, you just weren't saying anything. I think it’s really cool you can turn into a dragon.” I blushed. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know what to say, no one has ever said anything like that to me before…” The ice just spread, both my feet were frozen, covered in ice. “I can’t get the ice to stop…” Quinn reached up and grabbed my arm. “You need to just calm down, I can kiss you that could calm you down.”  “I don’t know…” I was really confused, I don’t think I was supposed to kiss boys. Quinn was really cute, Tamara already kissed a boy, one of the ones we played with in the dragon kingdom.  Even though I didn’t say yes Quinn pulled me down by my arm and kissed me. My first kiss from a boy. “Dawn!” I heard my mom yell. Everything that happened next, happened fast. My mom melted the ice with her magic and scooped me up. She passed me to my dad and he brought me into the castle.  Dad brought me to my room and he seemed mad, but when my dad gets made he doesn’t yell, he doesn’t say anything which makes me feel worse. “Daddy? Dad I’m sorry.” I frowned. He didn’t speak for about ten minutes then he said, “Do you know how old you are Dawn?”  “Yes… I’m ten.” I muttered and sat on my bed. “Kissing is something you do with your mate when you’re older. Do you know what a mate is?” He looked down at me, he didn’t look as mad. I shook my head. “Not really but I’ve heard of it…” Dad sighed. “It’s the person you’re going to marry, like me and your mom. Dawn you’re way too young to do that kind of stuff. Why did you do it?” That was a question I wasn’t ready for. “I couldn’t stop it, I forgot to say no.” My dad’s entire mood changed. “What?” “He asked me if I wanted to kiss, I said I don’t know, I didn’t say no but I’m sorry I should have. He pulled me closer and kissed me.” I explained. “What else did he say?” Dad asked calmly but he wasn’t. “He said something about wanting me to be his queen and that it’s cool I can turn into a dragon, that’s all.” I had tears in my eyes because it was rare that my dad was mad at me and I hated when he was. I watched as my Dad left the room. I laid down in my bed and cried. About half an hour later I heard my mom and dad yelling in their room. “What the hell is wrong with you Scorch?? You can’t just threaten a child like that!” Mom yelled. “Carissa calm down.” Dad said calmly. “He’s lucky all he got was a threat.” “I’m not going to calm down, they don’t know what they did was wrong, they’re young! You’re a king Scorch, you can’t just threaten kids for urges they can’t control!” Mom groaned. “You're going to have to apologize to the King of the east kingdom.” “I’m not f*****g apologizing to them Carissa, their son forced Dawn to kiss him. Now she feels like she did something wrong because some eleven year old elf sexualized her for being a dragon shifter!” Dad yelled, that was the first time I ever heard Dad yell, at my mom or anyone. “I didn’t know that.” Mom exhaled. “Fine, don’t apologize, you’re right. Next time please don’t use threats. We can always discuss issues with the parents. I’m gonna go talk to Dawn about it. Jenny is gonna watch Steel until the morning.” Steel was my baby brother, he was named after our uncle.  I looked up as my mom walked in and I wiped my tears. Mom sat on my bed. “What Prince Quinn did was wrong. Even if you said I don’t know that still means no. The only thing that means yes is yes. You’re not in trouble okay? You didn’t do anything wrong. Your dad already told them he’s not allowed to come back anymore.” I laid my head in her lap. “Okay…” I felt a lot better after being comforted by my mother. Using my magic for the first time should have been a special event. Instead it was one of the bad memories that helped form who I’m going to be.
