Chapter 6: Trust

-Dean- I could tell my words had surprised her. There was a shift in her demeanor, and though she tried to turn away, I kept her in place. I wasn’t just concerned about her trying to grab the knife or knee me in a sensitive spot. I also enjoyed feeling her body pressed against mine. She was tall for a female, but she fit perfectly against me. I was semi-hard from her proximity, and if she continued to wriggle, she would undoubtedly feel it. But given her clear hatred toward males, I knew she wouldn’t appreciate that. “Your father?” she asked. “Exactly,” I replied. “And what has he done to earn such hatred from you?” “That’s a private matter between him and me, but I think you’d benefit from it.” “Oh really?” “Yes, and if you’d just be quiet and listen, I’ll explain.” She growled lowly, clearly displeased by my sarcastic tone. She wasn’t used to being talked back to, but she’d soon learn that I didn’t bow to anyone. “Go on,” she sneered. “Are you familiar with Alpha Revenge?” “The alpha of the largest pack? I’ve heard of him.” “Well, he’s my father.” -Cara- Damn… Just Dean was the son of the infamous Alpha Revenge, one of the most feared and powerful alphas out there. I had always wanted to take him down, like every other alpha, but I was far from ready to face him. My pack was growing with female warriors, but it also included civilians—females who didn’t want to fight and needed protection while I took on alphas and claimed their territories. Defeating Revenge would give me a significant advantage, and other alphas might even surrender willingly, but he was too strong for me—at least for now. But what could Dean’s father possibly have done to make his own son despise him so deeply? “Y-You’re his son?” Dean nodded, his red eyes making a bit more sense now. I had never seen anything like them before, but then, I had never met a cursed child or their offspring. Cursed children often didn’t live long because people were terrified of them. Yet I couldn’t see what was so dangerous about Dean. He wasn’t particularly intimidating, but maybe that was because my thoughts were now clouded with the thought of ripping off his clothes. Goddess, I thought, I had never felt this way before, and it was unsettling. “And what does that have to do with me?” I inquired. “You want his territory and pack, don’t you?” he goaded. I nodded. “If you help me take down my father, it’s yours.” “Mine?” I asked. “Yes.” “You’d give up your birthright just to exact revenge on your father?” Dean’s eyes were cold and hard as he slowly nodded. “What has he done to you to make you hate him so much?” I asked. Dean didn’t answer. Instead, he continued, “With my help, I can get you close to him and past his border patrol. I know every weakness and loophole. But if I do this, you have to help me find my friend’s killer.” “How am I supposed to do that?” I spat. I had no idea who his friend was or who might want to kill her. How could I possibly help? “Because the killer is someone in the pack. I just need to figure out who.” “And with the ‘scary’ and ‘crazy’ female suddenly in control, you think you might scare the killer into revealing themselves?” I asked. “He or she might be more inclined to talk once they see me take down my father and stand by your side.” I should have been frightened by his talk of killing and revenge, but I wasn’t. His dark plans seemed to draw me in, perhaps because no one had ever matched my own darkness before. “But my mother and sister—I won’t see them hurt,” he added suddenly. “We never harm females.” “Good. So, what do you say?” What did I say? Taking down Alpha Revenge would be a significant blow to all the other alphas. It would put me in a powerful position, but it meant placing my trust in a male—my mate. I had vowed to hate all males and never, ever trust another. So did I want to risk everything again by trusting him?
