Chapter 2

Freya “I can’t stand Professor Bell!” I force a smile and meet Tiffany’s gaze. She was assigned to guide me through my first week of college here at Magic Academy. It’s part of the “big sibling” program, which I love. I wouldn’t have found my classes this morning without Tiffany’s help since I was exhausted after cleaning my room. “He sure is a character,” I say, not wanting to badmouth the intimidating professor too much. Chances are he could be listening. “He is so hot, but I swear he never smiles,” she mutters as we enter the cafeteria. “Anyway, let’s talk about something else. You’re a werewolf and...umm... I have a few questions for you.” My cheeks heat up a little. I’m not used to being around people who aren’t werewolves. Tiffany is a witch, which makes me wonder: Am I as fascinating to her as she is to me? I pick up a tray and smile at her. “Shoot.” “Do you have a mate?” “N-no,” I’m a bit ashamed of giving her the long answer, but I suspect it might be wise to give it to her. “I can’t connect with my inner wolf, and therefore, I can’t find my mate either.” I expect her to shoot me another question, but her smile falters, and her expression turns sad. “s**t, I didn’t know it worked like that! I’m so sorry that I asked. Fuck... I’m trying to make friends with you, but here I am, already making a fool out of myself.” “No, not at all!” I wave my hand to dismiss her worries. “It doesn’t upset me to talk about it. Every person in my pack knows. I was pretty much the talk of the town.” The memory still haunts me. Alpha Jaxx and his crew, Josh, Stu, and Kenny, made my high school experience hell. I’m relieved to have graduated without any major issues, but I know that Alpha Jaxx was not pleased when I left the pack. Without me as a target for his bullying, there is no one left for him to torment. There are still marks on my skin where he hit me... “Oh wow. You must be feeling so relieved that your Alpha also decided to enroll at Magic Academy, right?” I stop in my tracks to stare at her in confusion. What did she just say? That my Alpha enrolled? As if sensing my bewilderment, Tiffany nods at a table. “Those four werewolf guys are new here. Principal Goldstein said they enrolled here today.” My heart sinks into my stomach as I follow her gaze to the table. There they are, Alpha Jaxx with his crew, sitting comfortably as if they belong here. My mind spins, and I feel a lump forming in my throat. Is this a sick dream? Feeling overwhelmed, I look at Tiffany and say, “I need to visit the bathroom.” “Oh, okay,” she smiles. “Take your time.” I don’t respond and just turn on my heel since I can’t get out of here quickly enough. With Jaxx here, it feels like I’ve been plunged right back into the hellish nightmare of high school. All he ever did was hurt me! My steps grow quicker. I can’t believe my Alpha followed me here. Is he a stalker now? It’s not like he and his crew have any academic dreams to become something. They barely scraped through their classes at high school! The idea that they somehow qualified for Magic Academy leaves me feeling nauseated. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Alpha Jaxx rise from his chair, and my heart skips a beat. His friends are laughing but grin when I look at them. f*****g s**t. I quicken my steps, knowing he is out to get me. I swerve around the corner, colliding with someone entering the bustling cafeteria—Professor Bell. My face is pressed into his broad chest, and I catch the scent of his cologne. It’s fresh with a hint of cedarwood. I could inhale it all day... But Professor Bell quickly pulls away. His hands, however, remain on my shoulders to steady me. I lift my eyes to his red, and our gazes lock briefly, causing me to feel palpitations. How can a man be so beautiful? His irises, a startling shade of red, pull me in like magnets. I can’t look away, which only makes this more awkward. I stare at him while his expression remains calm. “You need to watch your steps, Miss Freya,” he sounds amused, and my face burns at the sound of my name on his lips. I suspect no woman on earth is immune to his charm, and I immediately stammer an apology. “I’m... I’m sorry, Professor Bell.” Professor Bell, however, doesn’t want my apologies. He removes his hands from my shoulders, and I shiver when his lips curl into a faint smirk. “There’s no need for apologies. You didn’t hurt anyone...” He curiously looks me up and down from top to bottom. “Still, I can’t ignore the fact that you seem distressed. Is everything alright?” His tone alone makes me nervous enough that I could spill the beans, but by some miracle, I keep it inside. “I’m fine, thank you.” A thick eyebrow lifts in question, his piercing gaze studying me for a heated moment that makes me sweat. I expect him to call me out, but he steps aside to let me pass. Phew. I begin walking, but Professor Bell isn’t done with me yet. “Miss Freya,” he says suddenly, causing me to turn around. “Remember, this isn’t high school. Whoever troubled you in the past has no power over you here unless you let them.” Okay, that’s so creepy—how can he just know I’m dealing with someone from the past? Before I can process his words, he strides away. I stare after him before remembering I must find a hiding place. Luckily, there’s an empty classroom at the end of the corridor. I open the door and stroll towards one of the desks while muttering, “I wish I could follow your advice, Professor Bell, but Alpha Jaxx isn’t a problem I can ignore. That man is mentally ill.” Memories of how he tormented me in the past flash past my mind. I see him hitting me in the stomach and laughing when I cough up blood. Damn it, why am I remembering this now? Tears are prickling behind my eyelids, but I won’t let them fall. I refuse to show myself weak, but when I hear footsteps, I realize I might not have a choice. Fate is here. The door to the classroom squeaks open, and my heart leaps into my throat when I hear Alpha Jaxx chuckle. He isn’t alone either—his whole crew is with him. “Hello, sweetheart. Have you missed us?” Alpha Jaxx’s voice creeps into my bones, his tone dripping with sarcasm. Stu, Josh, and Kenny snicker behind him. I have a bad feeling about this. My gut tells me to run, but I know I can’t outrun these people. They are bigger and much stronger than me. “Jaxx,” I say while holding his gaze. I’m actually proud of how calm I managed to sound. “What are you doing here?” There’s a moment of silence followed by a belt of laughter. All the men are having fun at my expense. “Wow! The werewolf who can’t connect with her inner wolf thinks she can talk to me?” Jaxx taunts. “Isn’t that some funny shit...” I swallow back a growl and instead ask, “What do you want, Jaxx?” The laughter fades, and a grim smile curls Jaxx’s lips. “Don’t flatter yourself. I want nothing from you, pipsqueak.” I jump when his hands slam down on the desk on either side of me. He is staring into my eyes with a psycho look on his face. Is he going to hurt me? A lump of discomfort forms in my throat as I make eye contact with him and ask. “Then why are you here?” Jaxx’s wicked smile widens. He looks like a hyena, and his foul breath washes over me as he leans closer. “Well, isn’t this interesting? The little Omega finally found herself a backbone.” I expect him to say more, but the bastard has other plans. In the blink of an eye, he grips my hair in an iron grip. His nails turn into claws, and I scream when he yanks me up by the root of my hair. My scalp is on fire, but Alpha Jaxx doesn’t care, nor does he let go. "Freya, Freya, Freya..." He mocks with a hint of madness in his sarcastic voice. “You knew your place in the past. You respected me, but it seems all it takes is a day without me for you to forget. Therefore, it’s time I reminded you of who your Alpha is.”
